Title: Best recorded MPG for GTI
Post by: Sootchucker on 19 May 2018, 09:58
OK, just for a bit of fun, please don't take this too seriously. But as I have a loaner "R" DSG at present, and on my jouney ome from work last night I'd thought I'd see what it was possible to get out of her economy wise, I was quite shocked to see an average for the 17 mile journey of 45mpg.

So it got me thinking if an "R" can get 45 mpg, surely a GTI can get 50+ mpg ?

So come on what's your best recorded (please list type, so 230ps, 245ps, DSG, manual etc).

Now before people get their knickers in a twist and state that you don't buy a GTI or R for economy I agree, this is just a bit of fun and I don't for one moment assume that's how they will be driven all the time. Just what is technically possible ?

My best:

Stuck in a long 50 zone on the M6. I think given more time I could've got more but I was quite glad to escape the boredom!

The best I've had out of mine is 42 mpg but that's not exactly hanging about.

I had a 2017 Focus ST before the Golf and best I could get out of that was 31 mpg and that was driving the same way.

Definitely counts as cheating but got 92 mpg over 10 miles on the trip while driving down from the top of Mount Penalara (8000 feet) in Spain. By the bottom, I realised I hadn't touched the throttle once in 25 minutes. Quite pleased the brakes discs didn't melt. Standard GTI.

I've had 47mpg on a trip up to loch Lomond and Skye and regularly get mid 40s to Lockerbie and back and that's not hanging around either. It's a very impressive engine and car all said.

I got 46.5 mpg yesterday on the M1 with 60 mph speed limits. Got up as high as 48 mpg on some patches but then started to become a dangerous game trying to get to 50 mpg without crawling along!

It's braking that destroys the kinetic energy that then has to be replaced by combusting fossil fuels. Without braking a hybrid car would be no better than a conventional car.

My previous car was a heavy Mercedes E320 cdi. I learned to look ahead and avoid braking and could get similar mpg to the current gti. It would return almost exactly 40mpg at a steady 100mph on the beautiful Spanish interior highways.

Unfortunately ordering the gti without brakes was not an option.

Also the gti is not the most aerodynamic car on the market ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile_drag_coefficient ) so it helps to drive as slowly as possible in 7th gear.

But, hey, as somebody pointed out   fun = 1 / (fuel economy)

https://photos.app.goo.gl/VXP4g1jr1xu6wSv39

As you can see the average speed is 27mph because unfortunately I do a lot of town driving but even so 38mpg is, I think, quite respectable.

Getting to the high 30s in a busy London commute is excellent. Mine is a steady run (I generally go in around 5.30 am) but it's only 5.3 miles and get around 35-38 at this time of year but that drops by about 7 in the cold.

My commute is down the M4, so it's a mix of 70mph sections and then stop/start crawling when I hit sticky patches and as I get closer to London. A/C has been on constantly due to the heat wave so perhaps when the weather's chilled out a bit I'll see a slight increase.

Good to hear. I’m seriously considering it but was a bit concerned about traction but I guess it’s just a matter of learning to drive the car again. My MPG is still around the 30 mark, 9,000 miles on the click now. I was able to get 39/40 in my S3 so the Clubsport mapping must be something to do with it?

I had a lack of traction in the first three gears with the P-Zero's on but now I've got PS4S's on it's much less of an issue. Once they're warmed up you really can lay it down well. Maybe the remap improves economy slightly but if you could get 39/40 in an S3 then you should get at least that or more in a CS due to less weight to pull around.

I’ve still got the 18 inch BS that came with the car but due a change soon. I’ve been reading a lot into tyres so looking at the PS4 when ready. Yea 39/40 was on a 3 hour drive atvsteady speed but didn’t get that often. Lol

I don't think you can get PS4S's in 18" but you can certainly get something better than the BS you have now. I very rarely get above 40 mpg, just when I want to it can do it.

Looking at thePS4. They seem to get a decent review and come in 18’s. Thinking about getting the Revo done in winter when they usually have their discount. I’m not overly bothered about the MPG but if going stage 1 improves it then it’s a bonus along with the extra power and torque.😁

I think you'll still find a decent improvement in grip with PS4's and I had mine remapped at the discounted rate, think I got 10 or 15% off...

Not a bad discount that. Grip isn’t too bad with the BS with the decent weather but when the temperature drops they are quite bad. Definitely need to swap them out. Thanks for all your advice mate. Cheers.👍🏻

Wow... got to be happy with this. Sadly had a death in the family recently and the funeral was yesterday down in the east of London (well Chingford in Essex). Filled the GTI to the brim with Tesco's finest momentum, and off we set from deepest darkest Cheshire. M6, A50, M1, M25, A10 all 206 miles each way (so 412 overall).

Now motorways were usually quite heavy with seamingly endless 50mph stretches (although very few hold ups), so the max I ever really got to was around 73mph, with 65-70 the norm, and as said, plenty of 50mph speed controlled areas (which the adaptive cruise control is great for). Only real delays were coming off the M25 and driving into Chingford on the A10 and A110 which was very heavy both ways with crawling traffic.

Driving mode set to individual (DCC - comfort, Engine - Normal, ACC - Sport, Engine noise - sport, Climate Control - Eco). Air-con on for about half the journey and 3 adults up in the car. Now considering my GTD would average about 56mpg over the same sort of journey, I'm staggered that the GTI came so relatively close (especially as it had only 1400 miles on it when I started the journey), and my car is running 19" alloys and the DSG gearbox.

Filled her back up just after the photograph was taken (2nd click of the pump) - £50.27 (£1.299 / litre) = 38.70l (8.513 gall) = a true MPG of 49.1 - so the computer is pretty accurate. Well happy. I didn't replace the GTD with the GTI for ultimate economy, but based upon those figures, I'm not giving up much. As I expected, (like the GTD), the GTI was a supreme long distance cruiser, and at each destination I got out with no leg or back ache at all. It really is a great all rounder and loving it more and more as the miles go on.

Well I did it.

Amazingly without even trying broke the magical 50mpg in the new GTI. Actually got 50.4 overall for my 16 miles journey home, no doubt helped by the roadworks that kept motorway speeds (for 5 miles) at 50mph. Actually when I came off the motorway it was reading 53.9mpg, but I hit every set of traffic lights on my 3 miles to home from the motorway exit otherwise it would have been even better ! 8)

This car just keeps surprising me. Might have to lift the bonnet and make sure they didn't acidentally put another diesel lump under there   ;D

My new best in my 2013 Gti PP is 45.2mpg. No idea how some of you are hitting much higher numbers!? Do the DCC settings make a big difference?

Maybe fuel too - as mine is a daily, and I'm doing a fair few miles I tend to use normal 95Ron petrol - if I switch to the more expensive premium unleaded will I see better mpg?

MrJollyGood - how many miles do you do? I understand that premium fuel will improve mpg slightly but of course costs more too. If you keep your car for a long time/high mileage then an added benefit of premium fuel would be improving engine life (depends on a few other things as well though...)

Had two of them thanks very much. Now have a GTI. Thanks for telling that I'm doing it all wrong by driving my GTI sensibly. I wasn't aware that the rules were you had to drive it balls out and like a knob all the time ?

Mistakenly I thought it was a car of two halves on one side a B road blaster and huge fun, and on the other a sensible frugal motorway mile muncher (much like my old GTD's).

Sorry for letting the side down.

Don't think anyone said anything about you doing anything wrong so calm yourself down.

It's an interesting topic. But if you buy a GTI and constantly worry about fuel consumption, you've bought the wrong car.

SRGTD should have actually said go and buy yourself a 1.2 TSI instead!

I think the point here is that, certainly in my case, I want a car that is fun, exciting and quick but the problem is much of the time I'm going to be commuting and would ideally not want to pay out loads in fuel when I can do no more than potter about. Fine if you have the space and finances for something to play with and something for the mundane but since I can't (I have room for 1 on the drive and we have 2 cars so a third is out of the question) so although I'm not exactly obsessed with economy, I do keep an eye on it and am pleased when I can get a decent figure. But when I get the chance to enjoy driving, then it really doesn't matter. The GTI covers it all rather well
