Those wheels on the GTi are 17" Fred. 18s and 19s are optional.

Nah, those 18s on the GTI are definitely 18s.
yeah those are the optional 18" but standard in Germany will be 17" 👍

And there we go, that’s the GTI I was looking for! All hope is not lost after all, thanks for the picture.

Noting that all the cars in the promo shots have the optional front fog lights switched on when, in the UK at least, it's illegal to use these unless there is reduced visibility.  Without doubt the majority of Mk8 GTI sold with this option box ticked will have them turned on 24/7/365 so wouldn't it have been more honest of VW to just call them DRL's and admit they had to do something to jazz up what is a very odd looking front end??  Appreciate that the chance of being taken to task by the law for using them is miniscule but a mainstream manufacturer promoting illegal use of a feature seems strange.

To be honest, from the rear three quarter and minus the GTI badge, that could be a Mk7 - its hardly radically different.

It really isn't radically different to the Mk7. The most radical change is the dashboard and the buttonless dash. Other than that, many of the reasons i chose a Mk7 are still there in the Mk8. Most of the complaints on here about the Mk8 just seem superficial to me.

I've come to realise over the last few months that the dash isn't going to be as off putting as i'd first feared. Unless you're constantly fiddling with the heater controls and headlights while driving (and you shouldn't be) then it isn't a major issue. At least most of the functions you'll actually need are easier to see than they are in the Mk7, as they're located higher up the dash in the Mk8.

Losing the gas strut under the bonnet is a bit of a shame, but in the 2 and a half years I had my Octavia I didn't feel like not having one was a good enough reason to choose a different car.

Ironically, the new Octavia now has two gas struts under the bonnet - seen at 15min 53sec - 16min in the video at the link below;
