Very nice, one of my favourite mk1s. I had one of these for about four years, sold it two years ago. Loved it but it was time to move on.

I've got a couple of heated seat switches for sale if yours are broken. Took me ages to source them.

jay - that would be great thank you.. whereabouts are they? if its in oxon i might be able to pop in?

veedub - i will be looking to replace with a black roof... i thought about a 'cream' one to match the leather but then thought that I wanted to keep it 100% original... much better that way..

the only things that i will replace if i do might be the suspension, zaust and the front lights.. and of course the stereo and speakers.. prob won't fit a sub and amp though

alright then, it's not.

Guy, does it need a new roof or can it be repaired?
Title: Re: today I went and bought...
Post by: Guy on 10 June 2009, 22:17
will do chuff

martz... i am not 100% certain... i think it is the original but don't have much experience (read any experience) of convertibles so I am going to see rubjohnny and get his advice when I get it.

the previous owner admitted that it could do with replacing... and when i saw it, it certainly wasn't 100%... especially when the roof was being opened and closed... I am happy to pop up and see you if you want to give an opinion on it.. i did however take this into account the hood replacement when i purchased it

Title: Re: today I went and bought...
Post by: Guy on 10 June 2009, 22:22
while i am here... although i want to keep it original I want to upgrade a couple of bits...

what do people think of replacing the lights with smoked crystal lights?

at the end of the day I want the lights to be better than the original... and of course don't want to spoil the look of the car

Guy, there's a thread in mk1 maintenance http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=8181.0 and it has a tech link on page 5. I've not read through it, but it's a start.

I think the fun of a mk1 is that split second when you wonder if you are actually going to stop in time.

well... it needs new lights... the three genuine lights that are in the grille are cracked/stone chipped, the other is an imposter and a different colour to the others  - i might just get clear 'crystal' lights... but need to find the right ones/quality first

roof, wheel refurb, alarm and tunes are topping the list at the moment..

i kinda like the hair all over look... although I was looking at one of the hottuning ones last night?

fuel filler neck is knackered... where is the best place for a new one?

and can anyone recommend a new hood supplier/fitter pls
Title: Re: today I went and bought...
Post by: Dinky on 16 June 2009, 08:14
Are you staying with four lights?
i looked at a few of the crystals and no offence to anyone who has them, but there are a few cheap looking ones..
I have been looking at the smoked ones from Germany :undecided:

Haven't seen them ones tbh..

Your talking £80+ for a cabriolet one, I have just purchased a tintop for about £35 from Euro which I am going to adapt to fit. look here - http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=43

Do a forum search for hood as there has been a few topics regarding it

yeah.. staying with the four lights and if i can't find anything of decent quality then I will just get new standard ones... i hate cheap lights so won't buy crap as you only have to replace them again

that is such a useful thread link for the filler neck replacement... thank you. ECP here i come!!

wow... what a day

replaced front and back plates for pressed plates

then popped over to see rubjonny today as he said he would be able to help with the stuck alternator bolt... tbh I wasn't holding out much hope but after a couple of goes he figured out a work around and managed to complete the following...

replaced:

alternator belt
alternator bolt
cam belt
cam belt tensioner
water pump
thermostat
front flang O ring (unfortunately the flange cracked upon refitting)
side flange
checked timing after removing radiator to free up dizzy

rewired radio to actually work when the car does

i am indebted to rubjonny big time for his help, he has done so much to get the rivage running sweet as a nut

today was the first day when i actually felt like i wasn't driving an old wreck and was driving something that was approaching a semi-decent motor

so when i got back i cleaned and then dyed the hood (and most of me by the looks of things)

I tidied up the boot, sorted out a rear light cluster fitting, made the boot side cards fit, refitted the rear shelf, adjusted the back seat so that it wasn't moving about at all, removed an old sticker mark on the rear screen.

resecured the drivers side door arm, this time hopefully for good, although I have a sneaky suspicion that it will fall off again!

i found an old set of mats I remember I had put by for a rainy day, cleaned them up and fitted them, then worked on cleaning the dash and interior plastics

tomorrow... if I can I will try and breathe some life into the current excuse for a carpet (although I might do this after bugjam so I don't get too precious at the show) and I will be off to order a few bits from vw - never know... i might even take some pichers

Driver side door, is it the stupid little white plastic things that keep coming off ? The white bits that the screws go into and they go into the door itself ? If so then just get some new ones, I got some new ones from http://www.gpcvwaudi.co.uk/ if they still do them. I tried all sorts for ages to get them to fix back in but in the end it was solved by the new white plastic bits. Had loads of agro and I think they cost about 50p !

as for being gutted... don't be.. I think unless you knew mk1's inside out and all the bolt positions you didn't stand a chance.. even my regular mechanic just wanted to just shear the bolt via the bracket

yep... its the small white plastic things... they don't sit very well in the door at all... had the door car off completely this afternoon trying to find a permanent fix to it... thanks for the heads up on the replacement :afro:

Don't bother trying to find a fix. Take it from me, just buy some new ones (if you can still get them) as the old ones will never hold the door handle on the same again. I spent ages trying to make the old ones work. Never happened. New ones fixed it in two minutes.

so it's been a while since I updated this thread... various different things have been taking priority

got myself a 'george' the other week which does wet vac spray and extraction.. this pleased me. I always promised myself that once I got one of these I would give the interior of the cabby a good going over...

so I decided that as I had a couple of days free this week I would give the job some proper attention

this was what I found when I removed the seats...

I don't think that the carpet has had a lot of love during its life

took the carpet out and the interior was a complete tip, underlay was rotten so I binned it.. wiring was a total shambles
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2446/3944947969_bd71edc62e.jpg)

once the carpet was out I could see what a real state it was in
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2512/3944958853_4cc0c99906.jpg)

decided to use a strong mix of G101 and Autosmart Biobrisk... worked in then jetwashed off..

so halfway through cleaning the carpet was starting to give results... and give out a LOT of dirt!

finally done but still soaking wet
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2589/3944970515_6a0659d517.jpg)

extracted - the results were obvious
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2531/3945777500_ddb6e4d02a.jpg)

and on the line to dry
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3488/3944997495_0bfac4c674.jpg)

while that was drying decided to tidy the interior a bit

set about cleaning up the wiring... where the original loom had got wet the insulation had rotted...
(its difficult to see in this photo but the passenger footwell was a mess)

so stripped it all back and cleaned it... then covered it in servisol, then let it dry.. then reinsulated

I cleaned the footwells with a strong mix of G101 and in some places Tardis... then extracted all the water with my trusty George

as I had removed all the rotten and smelling soundproofing and underlay I re-lined the footwells with some spare dynamat that I had left over from my mk3 ICE install..

I will be ordering some proper mk1 underlay to go over the dynamat to add a bit more soundproofing and comfort - this will be added in the near future

refitted the carpet, wasn't as bad a job as I thought it was going to be

I did think the same Ben, but I thought it was worth a shot and if it didn't turn out ok then I would just get a new carpet. it's always nicer to have the original and it was very good practice for me on those hard to shift stains.

I don't think I would have achieved the same result if I didn't jet wash it though... however good the George and however strong the chemicals are this needed a really good blasting and all the corners and nooks and crannies would have been impossible to clean in situ.

its been a while so i thought I would post a quick update

the leak [see http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=134530.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=134530.0)] will hopefully be sorted sunday

as of 30/11 she will be SORN and undercover hence my storage post in the mk1 section

in the meantime I have the following plans:

find a replacement suspension set so that it is lowered 'slightly' but more importantly bumbles along comfortably and safely
replace front wishbones and bushes
replace fuel filler neck with a stainless steel one (purchased but not fitted)
find cost effective way of replacing hood/headlining/bag/window surround
ensure that it is not leaking and fit mk1 underlay/soundproofing
find replacement ashtray & cabby MFA stalk
fit new rocker gasket and replace current rocker cover or powdercoat existing one
she is being stored on steelies so current castellets can have a refurb
if time and funds allow have various bits of trim/upholstery treated to an overhaul inc possibly steering wheel
and last but not least... find a way of getting that goddam rear view mirror to stick!

Just seen this            you certainly keep me entertained  :lipsrsealed:

had to try and keep up with Nigel Mansell the transporter driver... the cabby hasn't moved so fast in years!

a successful day, without any real dramas

Old pipe off

it didnt look too bad until you get up close

so that was all refitted, just need two new screws to hold the filler neck in place

Next up, i turned the engine over by rocking the car in gear, and it went over in 2nd freely enough,

so off came the battery and in went my spare - removed the battery cut off switch the last owner had fitted and cleaned up all the terminals, and after a few attempts the old girl fired up

I have NEVER seen a Happier Mr Tona

so off she went outside under her own power

and had some lush steels fitted to roll on whilst the Alloys have a quick polish  :smug:

Then it was time to get her up ready for the next job, lower arms and all new suspension

even got  someone getting their hands dirty

So, time for some new parts to be ordered, and a LOT more info required on " How to . . . "  threads in the MkI section

all in all a good day

the roof has had it, its knackered and it needs to be sorted once and for all

bumpers have been poorly sprayed in the past

mechanicals etc all need to be done to make it safe... then it'll be MOT time!

Problem is  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=182015.new#new

As for the update .

Mr F was here quite early so we crack on.

Anti roll bar turned out to be a tw4t - i sheared one of the INNER bracket studs - see above link , then guy sheared one of the other studs       One All.

But finally it was off and not in that bad condition.

Next up were the  lower arms, a relative easy process as the 2 main bolts had been loosened last time to make sure the captive nuts didnt spin

then the front struts came off swiftly and were taken into work to have the springs removed, and THANKFULLY the main nutz came off with a spot of gentle encouragement from Mr Hammer.  :smug:

The inserts were fooked and had leaked a LOT, the top mounts were fubar'd and the ball joints arent very ball like.

So, next up was a spot of cleaning for Mr F,  and he has taken the front struts away to give them a new lick of paint

That was about it for today as i tw4tted my back into the vice on the workbench and was liable to get Mr Hammer out again

And a few piccies

Shiney Bitz

Look mum, no suspension

and he makes a good scrubber

Next up, fix the issue  buy some more bits and then rebuild

Not sure on the anti roll bar issue.

One small point, when you fit the inserts put a tiny amount of old engine oil in the housing, stops the insert rattling.

new spring plates on order... so I have two old ones going up for sale... I'll paint em up when i do the struts

pinch bolts purchased... they look different from the originals (same length and dia though) but I was assured they were correct

have been told by GSF that the bush kit for the wishbone WILL fit... and that it will stretch once inside the wishbone... looks like it is going to be a slag to fit  :lipsrsealed:

Well after a successful mission to fit a towbar to the wagon I set about the problem bracket . . .

And after a lot or soaking with penetrant the problem child is off and the sheared stud is removed.

Will run it up the hill to my new second home and see if I can get a stud or bolt tacked in place

So no Pressure frankers but i am now waiting on u sorting the struts out and getting the outer brackets and camber bolts getting purchased.  :lipsrsealed:

Title: Re: Guy's mk1 Rivage
Post by: JC on 23 March 2011, 17:55
Well Frankers was here by 10am, after a slight detour and a not so reliable sat nav to find CQ's  :lipsrsealed:

So we got to work

Front struts rebuilt using the freshly paint lowers and some REALLY bright yellow springs, and we slaved into place

Even Guy got VERY dirty today ( more of that later )

Next up were building up the wish bones. One  bush went in no problem, after a small dismantling job on the vice

The other side was like a jack in the box, as soon as prssure was released it popped back out , so a g clamp, a very quick transfer into the vice and jobs a good un ]

Ball joints went on easliy enough too, so they got slammed back on easily enough too

Anti-roll bar back on next, and after a disconnect and reconnect of the lower arm were all fitted and look sweeeet

even had time for a quick brew, forum mug used of course

then once it was all  slaved it we tightened the lot up, was going really well . . . . . .

Threw the wheels back on, re connected the battery and after 2 false starts the old girl fired into life and emerged from the garage

and even went for a little drive round the PRIVATE road

then i went and said it, its all going too well     :lipsrsealed:

Title: Re: Guy's mk1 Rivage

I hope you dipped your cock in that tea, balls included

Great work, springs are bright  Is it me or do you have different front and rear wheels?
Title: Re: Guy's mk1 Rivage
Post by: JC on 23 March 2011, 18:25
so back in she went, rear was raised up and this is where it all started going wrong.

Couldnt shift the lower strut bolts   penetration fluid, nope, stil solid, 2 ft breaker bar, nadda, 4 ft breaker bar - sweet fa

Impact gun recharged and still nothing.

So the car was jacked up a bit more, wheels off and BRUTE force finally overcame them

Next the top nuts - one came off easily, the other was just spinning the lot. and trying to get access into the boot of a cabby aint easy

Finally had it all apart and it went to a complete CROCK of POO.

Stripped the struts apart transfer over the spacers etc and the spring doesnt sit on the lower cap

Thought it would seat when we built them up

but alas no - the spring is slopping around when the struts is built n fitted

so on the phone to  shop and after a lot of  to n fro-ing they want more piccies

so

old spring fits onto the new cap, and the strut

but the new spring doesnt

and it didnt fit the old strut either

So a load of mesurements taken and piccies emailed off - and we ground to an abrupt halt

Now i now lowering springs of 35mm drop be a tad shorter but

Guy is now awaiting a call to see what they say, but if th spring dont fit the lower plate, and doesnt fit the strut even when fitted, it dont take much working out  :lipsrsealed:

I was gutted this didn't turn out as expected today.. but it gives us time to regroup and collect a few more bits to finish the job off properly and then get her MOT'd and back on the road and out of Chuff's garage!

Will update once I hear back from the supplier.... If not then they will be getting a call tomorrow midday.

Think how much more fun this experience has been as a result of all these challenges that you have overcome together.

I'm sure the pair of you have enjoyed how life affirming and enjoyable working together to solve problems like this has been.

Ahhh, f*ck it, I'm sure you're both royally f*cked off with the whole bloody affair.

Cars, eh?  Who'd have 'em?

hmmmm.... no... not royally fcuked off... although I am sure Chuff might say otherwise

I have certainly learnt so much from Chuff that there is no way I can look on this experience in any negative manner.

to be fair Thomas its been a pleasure to do,

despite 3 days not being able to keep owt inside me, 2 days not eating and not much sleep.   i felt ok for most of the day.

Guy has wanted to be 100% hands on - learning as we go, and most importantly today,  fetching and carrying like a good un to save me having to keep getting up.

The satisfaction he "seems" to be getting, espeically when summat goes well ( engine starting , front rebuild ) are worth all the effort.  :afro:

and yeah, Motorbikes are a Fcuking lot easier to work on

I must say that Chuff is a VERY good teacher... he has the patience and the skill required to guide someone like me, who started off a few years ago not knowing what different parts of an engine were, to the point where I will happily get hands on and 'do the other side'.. I also know that he wouldn't let anything slip by without it being 100% correct.

He is a tad stronger than me though.. not sure I would have got those rear strut bolts off by myself

They are around the right length for a mk1 unless you have been supplied Scirocco springs.

Very odd, I think cabrio rear oe springs are longer / stronger than mk1 hatch springs due to the weight of the hood.

Was the lowering kit for a mk1 hatch or cabrio.

Is it at all possible, I mean I know they are the wrong springs but is it possible that lowering "sports" springs could be a lot shorter but compress less, thus only lowering it 35mm?

Stiffer springs kinda thing?

I haven't got this setup, I had it once on my previous MK1 and I had no rubbing at all, Wheel/Tyre Combo was a set of RA's with 195/45 rubber, why, have you got rubbing issue?... whats you wheel tyre combo? Is your camber OK?

camber is on max negative at the moment... just to get the wheels on

can't remember the wheel tyre combo... I am sure chuff can oblige when he sees this... will save me a 2 hour round trip to look it up

wheels are le castellets

however... there was only one little instance of rubbing... and a mystery rattle to be investigated

Shaun... have you done a gear linkage kit on a mk1?
Title: Re: Guy's mk1 Rivage
Post by: SoundillusioN on 23 March 2011, 23:52
Max neg may be your issue then at the moment (depending on where it's catching), especially if you're running a profile of 50 or more.  worth a look to see where it's catching if it's bad.  May also be worth waiting until you've got the camber right, mines much lower at the moment but with 45s on, nothing is rubbing anywhere but camber is set at 0 whilst not on the road.

Can't help with the rattle with little info.

YES... YES I have, on all my Mk1's... one job I've always despised. You may not have noticed but my project thread is always in line with dub rides now so it's easier to read as it's only 10 pages. Link by my sig.

I posted the gear stuff on page 4 but its not a guide.  If you have questions though by all means fire away.  There is only one or two bits that can be a real pig.

thank you... I think you are right about the neg camber

the rattle might just be something that needs tightening up.. or it could just be a random in car thing that I haven't heard or noticed before as I was deafened and shaken to bits by the previous old suspension (did Chuff mention one of the rear springs was broken completely in two?)

do you have somewhere that you go to to get that linkage kit from... I bought one aaaages ago but it wasn't as complete as that. I have looked at this thread before http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=44 (http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=44) which filled me with dread (which is why I haven't done it).. but no so much now

NO, didn't know about your broken spring... I had that once on my previous MK1 on the front, didn't know until the MOT man told me! Springs were old though and at the time it was the reason I upgraded to what you have now.

I’m guessing you have a kit that looks like this:

which does cover the worst worn bushes but I found on the first car I did that the ball joints of the linkages weren't that great, the clips for them were shot and the main ball/bush for the selector was pretty fooked too so wanted to replace the lot.  The same was with my black one.

Crazy's sell it all but not as a complete kit and obviously not as cheaply as what I got.  I found everything sold as one kit on egay for about 25 notes delivered, they come and go so you have to look out for them if you want to save a few quid. None on there at the moment.

Using crazy's as an example or if you choose to get it from them, you need the following which can be found on THIS (http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/Items.php?cat=SLAREA&group=ENGINEBAY) page

They sell the basic bush with the short and long links included for about 18 quid delivered

(http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/images/LinkageKit.JPG) (http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/images/ShortLink.JPG) (http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/images/LongLink.JPG)

Listed as Basic Bush and Link Kit GLBK+ GLSL + GLLL

You will also need the selector Bush and Ball kit which stupidly comes with bushes that you get with the above!

Listed as Bush and Ball Kit

And after writing all that I just found you the complete kit for £22 delivered!   HERE (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Full-Gear-Shift-Repair-Kit-VW-Golf-Mk1-5-Speed-box-/310288115236?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item483e9ce624)

Tip for you, MK1s and 2's don’t have much of a smooth feel in the selector when changing gears compared to a modern car, so I recommend you find yourself a shift weight from a mk3 and replace the short link with it.  I have one, just not fitted it yet but had one on the previous golf and was so much nicer.

Found a couple HERE (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=mk3+golf+shift+weight&_sacat=0&_odkw=mk1+golf+shift&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313) as an example but they come with other mk3 bits you don't need so keep an eye out unless you just bite the bullet and buy one of these and bin the other bits.  After a bit of searching I found a weight on it's own for about £6... maybe try a scrappy?

Hope this helps.

Not a problem, makes a change to be helpful as mk1's are few and far between on here.

Yes, really easy to remove but I'm unsure if all models have them, I think they changed to something intergrated and more heavy duty on later models or 16v GTIs with O2A boxes?????  :undecided:  Just look in the nearside of a mk3's engine bay, quite low and close to the bulkhead for the part pictured above, it's only held in by two split pins.

The late type i'm on about look like this:

I reckon its not on Vr's or valver mk3s as they have a cable change box. 8v gti has rod change and I think that will have the weighted shifter

well the new rear springs fit :afro:

Then when it was dropped onto its wheels it was VERY nose down   so the fronts had to come off again

So 40 minutes later and she was back on here wheels and it was time to test out the new fuel filler pipe   its all fuel tight.

Next up another test drive round the private roads   and all seems well and no rubbing from the front no more

Hope this helps.

a word of caution to anyone considering a mk3 shift weight for a mk1

fairly sure a rocker cover gasket shouldn't look like this

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5268/5661618905_77e0c83964.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5661618905/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5661618905/) by Guy Frankland (http://www.flickr.com/people/guyfrankland/), on Flickr

so I replaced it

then decided to try to sort out the ever falling off door handle...

the problem lies in that the white clips won't hold in the door frame itself due to them being manhandled in the past

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5268/5661622077_2c729a48cb.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5661622077/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5661622077/) by Guy Frankland (http://www.flickr.com/people/guyfrankland/), on Flickr

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5101/5661624583_b892d5e1f8.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5661624583/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5661624583/) by Guy Frankland (http://www.flickr.com/people/guyfrankland/), on Flickr

the top of the handle wasn't being gripped by this little fella at all...

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5150/5662196024_59508d75ce.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5662196024/)
Golf mk1 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5662196024/) by Guy Frankland (http://www.flickr.com/people/guyfrankland/), on Flickr

so I removed it and squeezed the back of the clip to make it grip, this seemed to work on the top of the handle

i got two new (well... I say new.. they were off an old door) clips from CQ's

returned to base.. put it all back together... and it lasted about 5 mins (approx two door closures)

so Chuff stepped in with some metal tape.. this has been placed over the gash holes in the door to hold the clips in place..  its a temporary job until we can find something more permanent but should see us through the next couple of weeks

Title: Re: Guy's mk1 Rivage
Post by: Guy on 04 May 2011, 13:12
thanks Jack :)

tis a FAIL I'm afraid

nothing too drastic though..

side offside indicator not working - fixed by giving it a whack
screen washers not working - fixed by giving the connector a wiggle
nearside track rod end - excessive play

advisory - nearside handbrake 30% down - probably caused by the fact its been sitting doing not very much for the last god knows how long and it is slightly seized... Chuff said he has a solution for this  :lipsrsealed:

as you can probably tell the track rod end presents a bit more of a problem.. its under investigation at a friendly local garage who is going to take a looksee... if it does need a new steering rack then all is not lost as it needs to be safe.. would rather have the problem sorted properly.

garage will call me tomorrow with an update.. free retest within ten days

so all in all very pleased, nearly back on the road and nothing too much to worry about... everything else, including all the bits Chuff and I have done is peachy

They were dubious that the neg camber adjustment would come back into something reasonable... I said that they should give it a go anyway... they were surprised how good an adjustment they got in the end.

I was watching from the customer area on the screen so you can see what they are doing...

The car drives as straight and true as could be... its amazing the difference it makes!

They spent about an hour and a bit setting everything up and making sure it was as good as could be... all for the bargain price of £48.

Barrie the Manager is very knowledgeable and friendly... would recommend these guys to anyone. :afro:

Very thorough.  How much did they charge for that? Mines currently running on an ancient homebrew setup technique!    :lipsrsealed:

Be interested to know how far out it is now.  Feels fine though.

Cheers Guy.  I found somewhere local when it got its MOT, about the same price so that seems to be the going rate.  Its on my to do list but not critical as it appears to drive perfectly straight and true,  corners fine etc so I cant have done too bad a job.  I'm sure its not perfect though.

Even though it was flushed recently is it still running clear?  You may have free'd up some gunk since driving it and that maybe your smell.....

I was catching big whiffs of it occasionally

Hood Hydraulics

rightyo... did a bit of a check and top up on the hood today as well as lubing all the joints

I followed Madone's advice in this thread... topping up cabriolet fluid (http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=24358&highlight=hood+pump+fluid)

but there was a big difference between the fluid level when open (max) and when hood closed (below min) - this doesn't seem right to me?

also... devised a neat, very accurate, little method of topping up the reservoir... used a pump and a couple of tubes that I had lying about in place of a funnel, which I didn't have lying about...

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2287/5727586990_6a1fc9bace.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5727586990/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/5727586990/) by Guy Frankland (http://www.flickr.com/people/guyfrankland/), on Flickr

the hood appears to be functioning very happily... just wondered if the levels are being reading correctly?

but there was a big difference between the fluid level when open (max) and when hood closed (below min) - this doesn't seem right to me?

The difference will be the rams being open and then closed, from memory the fluid level will rise when open as the rams are closed, with the hood shut they open and take the fluid.

Hope this makes sense

its was more like hope that the gear was in there somewhere... one bush was completely FUBAR... another was completely missing!

now.. its a precise and definite gear change, as good as new... lovely stuff

so a little tiny update today...

found myself with an hour spare this afternoon and suddenly had a thought...

that 'temporary rear view mirror' that i can never see out of properly because it sits at the wrong angle and then falls off all the time really must go...

the original rear view mirror that I had purchased I never managed to fit properly because it kept on falling off... tried everything including all the 'extra strong' halfords rear view mirror kits...

so i took a spin down to autoglass and they stuck it on good and proper in about 20 minutes... job done... I can actually see whats behind me now.

this car is becoming VERY pleasurable to drive

Bet you're glad that's sorted now then..

How come only now it's becoming a joy to drive.... nearly bloomin winter!

i meant in comparison to how it was... little things are starting to really make it a joy..

being able to drive without crouching over like lurch to see in the temporary rear view mirror is just one example!

obviously it started to get A LOT better once the new suspension was on (thanks again Chuff) and the new steering rack was fitted and it was aligned and it actually went in the direction you pointed it!

then started to get even better to drive when I could find gears, and it stopped when I pressed the stopping pedal. (thanks again Mark)

new ashtray fitted today... the old one was fcuked and wouldn't come out of the tray holder... it also had a hole in it from an old alarm led. Picked one up at the berks mk1 meet last night from JamesW :afro: and combined the good bits from both to make a rather natty new looking one!

so, no update on this for 13 months +

almost as slack as Shaun  : :lipsrsealed:

  bloody Mk1 owners

anyway - i got asked to move this by Guy, but alas I saw some hurdles as its been abandoned outside since he fcuked off further south  :lipsrsealed:

So today, he set off from deepest and still dark devon with a trailer to come collect it himself asking me to pop over incase of any " issues ".

So with Hammer in hand, I set off to be greeted by

Yep the Ned curse was starting . . . . .  ..

Anyway, after a snapped bonnet cable,  :lipsrsealed:

a non priming fuel pump, ( whacked a few times )

and a NSR brake stuck on ( wheels off, whacked, still stuck, fitted space saver and it became unstuck )

( see knew that hammer was a good idea  )

The Rivage is heading south to a new

13 months!!  :embarrassed:

was really good to see you again too!!

good hammer skillz and you forgot to mention dickfcuk here managing to break the inside of the windscreen!  :lipsrsealed:

bonnet cable isn't snapped (just come off the handle)

the inside is in a complete state... 1st things first... get a decent cover for it, drain the interior of its contents of stagnant water, strip the interior completely, wash the carpet and seats properly, dry it out and remove all the mould

it started a couple more times this evening to move it off the trailer and then to move it up the road into its allocated parking spot... where hopefully now that things have changed a bit I will be able to give it a bit more attention

oook so had a brake light issue the other day.. checked and replaced the fuse, still no worky, then checked the brake light switch.. that seemed fine.. so rechecked and replaced the fuse again and bingo... they were working again..

decided to check all the fuses and replace them all, in the correct order!!

also replaced all the poppers on the tonneau cover... it fits correctly now instead of flapping all over the shop when i'm driving.

had a go at the dodgy drivers door card the other day too... from hangy flappy down upholstery to fitted and restapled with a handle that actually does what it is supposed to do thanks to Chuff
