Reverse gear
« on: 14 August 2011, 19:18 »
Hi
Today i had to reverse up a steep lane to let someone pass.
While reversing my mk3 8v gti it jumped out of gear a few times.
Is this a gearbox fault or selector issue.
Doesnt jump out when reversing on the flat
Anyone heard of this
Cheers

this was happening to me a few years ago, but it would only jump out of reverse
if i rev'd it high, ie reversing up a hill, after a few months i had no reverse at all and all the forward gears was making one hell of a noise...

contacted VW for a price on a gearbox and they said £1100  so i just went and picked one up from a breakers yard... £250.

if i had it looked at when it started to jump out of reverse then maybe it could have been saved, try and get it looked at before its to late

mine went exactly the same way too, it used to jump out of reverse if reversing fast or uphill, then i had to reverse out of a parking space up a bank and the gearbox exploded! mine lasted 2-3 years by being careful with it but i had no choice but to reverse out of parking space upbank after somebody jammed me in by parking right on my front bumper!

020 gearboxes are bloody awful . I think your best lookin for a used one anyway as repairing it could prove very expensive.
