hi there
i was in the same situation about 6 months ago myself,i was swaying towards the gti side as i assumed it would be quick enough for me as i,d previously owned a mk2 16v,however after driving a few i discovered that they really didn,t impress me power ways, they were nippy down low but the grunt soon disappeared at mid range,i then decided that i might go for a vr6 and had a test drive in one, which as soon as i drove i had to have,so i bought it.the thing which makes the vr6 the best buy for me is the 6cylinder note off it,pure lethal, and very smooth, also it really does pull veryvery
well.i was so close to buying a gti but am so glad i held out for something a little bit more special. The down side is the insurance is more expensive.i,m 33 and am paying 800quid fully comp, which i,m quite happy with, also its ok on petrol, certainly if u put the boot down it,ll be thirsty, but compared to a renault laguna i also have its much cheaper to run.also i reckon a vr6 will hold its value a lot better.my advice is to get a run in a vr6 before u rush out to buy a gti.
let me know how u get on there m8.

Thanks for the advice, I think you've just told me what I wanted to hear.I've been looking at various sites for a rough idea of prices and with a budget of around 4k I'm hoping to get a 94/95 with fair to high mileage.I would save a bit longer but its like waiting for christmas and I want one now! Got to be black or grey. As for insurance I'll probably go third party f&t if I can. Anyway, thanks again and enjoy driving the car I want!

cheers guy, but i've been keeping an eye on prices for a few months now and I know I havn't got enough for a mint one but hey, we've all gotta start somewhere. Most the cars have around 100k but they're meant to be pretty bullet proof right? Also im a technician and I know some guys at the local vw dealership and they say they don't see many problems with them apart from water pumps, plug leads and window regulators. I can stretch to 5k, aslong as its in resonable nick and no rust. I can't believe how many gti's i've seen with spots of rust, mainly on tailgates and doors, even up to a 96. I thought the Germans were better than that.

hi marky
when i was looking for a vr6 i too was aiming to spend in around that sort of money.i looked at 94 to 96 ones, some were a bit tatty .i put an add in the trader saying i was looking for a silver or black one.a guy rang me telling me he had a 92 black one,i was a bit apprehensive about going to see it as i,d looked at newer ones and they weren,t exactly mint.in the end i did go and look at the 92 one and to my amazment it was an absolute minter, with 82000miles on it.i bought it for ?3000 and am really pleased with it.so even if u do come across an older one it may be well worth checking out as i too was a bit against going for one as old as that.i looked at a 97 highline which was   quite tatty, scores, dents, crude touch ups,the lot, and the guy was looking ?6400 for it.Also i don,t like the newer ones personally as they did away with the bad ass chin spoiler and wheel arch trims, instead they look the same as a 1.4l.
anyway.happy hunting m8.
