Droning noise at 70mph...
« on: 15 September 2020, 10:22 »
Hi,
I’ve recently purchased my 2016 5dr Manual PP Mk7 and noticed over the weekend a droning noise when I get to 70mph...it’s noticeable at 65, very noticeable at 70 and starts to go away at 75+!
I was thinking wheel bearings however I’d assumed this type of noise would be there constantly but I’m no mechanic
The car has Santiago alloys with brand new P zeros all round and the pressure was a bit out on two tyres however I’ve just made sure they are all at 41psi.
I’m really enjoying the car besides this niggling issue as it’s the exact spec and colour (carbon grey) that I was looking for, any help or advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

How new are the tyres?

Run your hand over the inside portion of tread on the rear tyres to feel for any uneven 'sawtooth' wear pattern. This can cause the sort of droning noise you describe. It's caused by misaligned geometry, most probably rear toe.

If this is the case, then the only fix is new rear tyres then a full alignment check using a Hunter or similar machine and someone that knows how to use it.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve just checked and all four tyres are just over 7-8mm and I can’t seem to see or feel any uneven wear however I can see how the geometry being out would be a problem.

I’ll try and get it booked in with someone in the Birmingham area who knows what they are doing/talking about asap.

Cheers

Swop the wheels over. Move the front wheels to the rear and the rear wheels to the front. See if the noise goes away or changes.

I've had the rear inside edge saw tooth problem before - it wasn't noticeable at speed, you heard that at sub 40mph.

Do you have (major) vibration with the drone or not?

...there’s no vibration at all at any speed and the car tracks dead straight with no drift right or left and it’s the same when braking hard as in its dead straight.

I’ll definitely give the tyre swap front to rear a try this weekend

I had this on my 14 plate PP. It seems the standard fit Bridgestone's cause this saw tooth issue when they get to a certain mileage. I had just bought the car when the issue occurred. The car already had Conti's on the front and the original fit Bridgstones were on the rear. It was cured by a change to Continentals all round - courtesy of the VW dealer

P-Zeros generate a fair bit of noise. Michelins were quieter.

Ok so I’ve found a wheel alignment specialist who have the Hunter machine that is localish and I’ve got it booked in for Friday, they’ll carry out a check first before confirming what does or doesn’t need doing.

I’ll also try and jack the car up before Friday and check for any play when moving the wheels and check for excessive noise when I turn/spin them however the MOT is a week old and I’d assumed they would checked for any excessive play on each wheel?

Process of elimination I guess....
