I had the same Shell 0w-30 AV-L used in my car at it's year three service, I managed to find a litre top-up plus zip-up bag on eBay for £12.

Not many companies make it to the right VW 504 spec and if you look carefully at the Shell 1ltr bottle it's shape is exactly the same as the stuff VW are selling with their brand on.

Your car is a Mk7.5 though right? I’m a little confused! As some are saying they’re using 0w-30 504.00/507.00 spec oil in their Mk8 GTI’s, as mine states 0w-20 508.00/509.00 spec on the bonnet sticker.
Current car -

Are you sure you have the correct oil there Brocky? My GTI states 0w-20 508.00/509.00 on the sticker under the bonnet, is the clubsport different to the 245ps?, this is the oil VW recommended to me https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173120233691?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=gt2bXHAaQNG&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=tp2LCNeJSEm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Must be different for the 245 and the ClubSport.

I guess they must be different then, although I think Andrew did confess he didn’t see the sticker in a later video and couldn’t find concrete info online for his car if I remember correctly?! what does your sticker state brocky?

I’d be really surprised if the 245 and 300ps versions of the engine have different oil recommendations.

My 245 GTI (MY21) has no sticker under the bonnet that specifies oil, just an image that references the manual (which of course says to refer to your dealer for the correct grade).

VW do change their minds during the life of a particular engine model but my local VW recommend and supplied Shell Helix Ultra 0W-30 for mine.

Here is a pic of the sticker under my bonnet (2022MY 245ps UK), as long as they are accepted as suitable by VW different grades of oil will be ok, it’s the spec that’s most critical, (such as 508.00-509.00 or 504.00/507.00)

My 2019 7.5 GTI specifes 0w20 508 /509.
Mk6 GTI Carbon Grey, 2010 Bluetooth and voice fitted, a few VCDS mods still a comfortable family car. Red Scirocco 2011 twin charger stage 1 - enjoyable drive now gone.  White 2016 Polo GTI (roller skate on steroids) replaced with an Indium Grey 2019 7.5 GTI PP.

The plot thickens! 🤔, it was my understanding that late build Mk7.5 GTI’s used 0w-20 508/509, I find it hard to believe that between 2019 and my own car that they used a different spec oil for a short period, but, I had a quick look back at the VolksWizard intake video where he takes off the intake cover and points out the oil spec, it does indeed state 504.00/507.00, there is no grade mentioned on the sticker though, it could well be that it is a clubsport (and possibly R) specific spec.

Interesting to see the difference between 504 and 508 (ie the two different petrol specs):
