Thanks. Which oils do you guys use? I was in Halfrauds, homebase and Costco today:

Halfrauds - Castrol Magnatec 5w30 - £45
Homebase had 1 litre bottles of Castrol Edge 5/30 half price at £8 (but they only had 3 bottles :( )
Costco had Magnatec 5/30 at £20 (less than half Halfrauds price)
They also had big 20 litre containers of Chevron 5/30 for £40
1999 mk4 1.8 n/a AGN Silver Grey

For the LongLife PD oils, you need either VW 506.01 (which is LongLife II spec), or 507.00 (which is the very latest LongLife III spec, as used in Golf V GTI, B7 RS4, and any of the new diesels with the Diesel Particulate Filter)

Stick with any of the VW specified oils from the major manufacturers (Castrol, Shell, Elf, Motul, Fuchs), but avoid Mobil 1 (because they lie about their VW approval), Comma, Millers, and the other smaller manufacturers.

Wonder where you got that second paragraph from?

Ahhhhh - but if the oil is hot enough when you drop the sump plug, most of that will drain back into the sump too!  :nerd:

Thanks. Which oils do you guys use? I was in Halfrauds, homebase and Costco today:

Halfrauds - Castrol Magnatec 5w30 - £45

That is only semi-synthetic - though a very high quality one, using ester basestocks.  So if you are really looking for fully synth, the Magnatec wont really do.

Homebase had 1 litre bottles of Castrol Edge 5/30 half price at £8 (but they only had 3 bottles :( )

Can't you still order online for that price.

They also had big 20 litre containers of Chevron 5/30 for £40

Yankie shyte - not even good enough for your lawn mower!

After reading this thread and the oil thread last night I thought Id add some comments

I just received an email opieoils (OO) who have a special offer on

Motul VW SPECIFIC 505 01,502 00,505 00 5W-40 VW Petrol and Diesel engine oil 100% Synthetic £27.20 inc vat

Now Ive obviously read Motul is a good oil from one of the major manufactures.

Anyway I rang  OO and said shouldnt the oil be 10W 40 and they said this is the oil to get and its approved.

Also its better on cold starts, and flows quicker

Just rang the main dealer as helpful as ever not  after getting through there automated switchboard

He said there oil was just a part number to reference no 10w 40 etc  he only new it it was Castrol  :embarassed:
and he works in parts, what a joke  :undecided:

Any way he said £54 for 5l and hed throw in a free oil filter....... Whoopee !!

Anyway my question is anyone running 5W 40  with no problems I have an AUM engine
