Title: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on 19” Santiagos
Post by: Peter_S on 03 December 2018, 07:21
Has anyone got any photos of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on 19” Santiagos?

I’m about to purchase a set but am concerned how the the tyre will help protect the rim edge and, how it will look (I seem to see many replacement tyres on cars which just don’t look right).

Thanks,  Peter-S

I’m in the same boat although have brescia’s, looking at PS4’s to replace the factory installed pzeros, may I ask what you changed from and what (apart from grip levels) differences you noticed, noise, steering response and mainly the absorption of bumps.

Cheers

I had P Zeros before and yes, grip is so much better, they seem to be better on bumps and for general ride quality, haven't noted anything obviously different in steering but 90+% of the time I'm on a dull commute. Noise levels are similar with one difference being the concrete sections of the M25 in Surrey which give a horrendous drone, all cars/tyres I've experienced have had trouble with that but these are the worst. Fortunately that section is not too long

Watts, thank you very, very much.  They look just perfect don't they?

I was beginning to think I might not get a response, so this has really made my day.
I'm going to put an order in for 4 this week.

I was going to revert to P-Zeros because they look great and I've been pleased with them and I couldn't risk the expense and displeasure of getting x4 MPS4s and then finding that I didn't like how they looked on the rim.

Your images are excellent if you don't mind me saying so and do those rim protectors really protrude what looks like 2-3mm?
Even if they don't, it wouldn't put me off getting them after seeing your images.

Best wishes,   Peter_S
BTW you've reminded me to put some details on my profile which include  MY16 5-door Carbon Grey DSG PP DCC Discover Media (Gen 2) Car-Net App-Connect (Apple CarPlay)

You're welcome  They are a much better tyre than the Pirellis, tramping is an extremely rare occurence now whereas the Pirellis could be pushed into it with relative ease. The rim protection is good too. They seem to have dropped quite a bit in price recently too, they were £180 each after discount on Black Circles when I got mine, more like £160 now.

Watts, "The rim protection is good too."  That's what I wanted to know.   Thanks for the reassurance.

Yes, KwikFit have today quoted £748 (x4 tyres £676 and £72 fitting)
I might be able to get a discount because I know the manager at the centre I use.

Our size 225/35 R19 Y is not currently available on their website which means that we can't take advantage of Michelin De Luxe Winter Kit promotion which is a pity.
The tyres are available at any KwikFit centre (but no Winter kit promo) although it seems they would have to scrape them up from all corners of the country for me.
That's a pity because I'd like all 4 to be from the same batch - date number on sidewall, crazy I know.

https://www.kwik-fit.com/offers/michelin-winter-kit-2018

I'm in no rush to change so I'll make enquiries at other places such as the one that fitted Cross Climate+ to my wife's MINI Cooper Coupé R58 - very pleased  with those.

Try Blackcircles, you get a discount for ordering 4 so £156 each fitted (£624 all in). You just choose from their selection of garages where you go to get them fitted. Very easy and a big saving on the price you've been quoted.

Watts, I will definitely try BlackCircles, thanks.

I had a Lexus IS 250 from new a couple of years ago.  The dealer only charged me £25 for fitting  4 Hankook Vento S1s which I obtained myself from Camskill.  Customer goodwill they said.  What do you think a VW  dealer might charge for fitting?

BTW when I had my MY06 GTI MkV and changed tyres I used the OE VW medal valves about £11 each I recall.
Do we need to use metal valves our Mk 7s?

You could ask your VW dealer though I suspect their idea of customer service won't match Lexus. Metal vavles aren't necessary. Another option to look at is Costco, they are usually keenly priced and review well in terms of standards when fitting.

Watts, "I suspect their idea of customer service won't match Lexus."  Ha-ha

"Metal valves aren't necessary."  Ok noted.   I won't bother then, thanks.

"Another option to look at is Costco,  ... "
Yes, I've seen good reports about them too including they are careful when fitting, if asked nicely!

I think you have to pay a membership fee, but that could still be cost effective I know.
Our nearest one is about 40 miles away but I'll still contact them for prices.

I thought the recommended size for 19s was a 235?? Or is that Pretorias on an R??

Not that it makes much difference, but if they have stock and the offer combined makes it worthwhile...

Yes, 235s are for Pretorias as they are a wider wheel.

Prices seem to be around £75 per tyre, which seems too good to be true?

aaargh!  can someone please let me know how we attach photo images to our posts?

To post an image you need to use a hosting site. Various out there, I use postimg.cc, upload your image choosing not to alter the image size and paste the "hotlink for forums" code into your post.

Watts, here is the image of the McLaren shod with PPZs 225/35 R19? ZR
Not really worth the wait I know but I thought it might be of interest.
My image is nowhere near as good as yours.
I’m not impressed by the fit of the tyre on the McLaren rim.

Peter
BTW what do you and the others think of those MAXXIS tyres?
Worth trying at half the price of Michelins?

Not much in the way of any rim protection there! Mind you, I suppose a McLaren is less likely to see the sort of action that a Golf does! I have noticed since I changed to Michelins I've not scuffed a rim, could be that I'm more careful now but the tyres do seem to offer more protection...

I don't know anything about the Maxxis tyres, sorry, look for some owner reviews to get a better idea of their performance otherwise you'll just have to make your own mind up. I would say again though that the Michelins are really good, virtually eliminated tramping, had some a few days ago but I was giving it a hard prod on the right pedal and it was wet at 2C so to be expected!

Watts, "... but the tyres do seem to offer more protection... "  That's music to my ears, thanks.

"I don't know anything about the Maxxis tyres,  ... "  Not a problem.
It's hard to imagine they will be better than MPS4Ss isn't it?
£76 is just too good to be true.

I'll stick with MPS4Ss, I plan to have them fitted next month.

Peter_S
BTW I see at least in the States, MPS4S are factory fitted to the latest Ford Mustang GT - plenty of grip required there :-)

Watts & others, just thought you’d like to know that I had x4 fitted today.
Cost at Kwikfit £640 inclusive.  Blackcircles quoted £623.  I’m content with Kwikfit because I’ve used them before and I trust one of the senior fitters there.

Two quick questions.
What’s the best way to clean off the lubricant they use to ease the beads over the rim?  It’s dried out white.
In those photos you posted, what tyre dressing were you using?

I think the lubricant is a type of soap, so I've always used hot soapy water and a softish halfords wheel brush and it's always come off okay.  By-the-way which Kwikfit do you use?

TurboTrev, I’ll try that thanks.

If you don’t mind, I’d rather not give the exact Kwikfit centre as I don’t want to get the guy and the centre who gave me the discount into any trouble.

I just showed them the Blackcircles price from their website and he matched it well, £20 more.
It took Kwikfit half-a-day to obtain them.

I asked a local VW dealer to quote.  They said £800 and declined to price-match Blackcircles!

All Purpose Cleaner and a stiff brush, can be used to clean up any tyres prior to drying and dressing and will fetch the tyre fitters stuff off.

Gyeon do one of the best tyres dressing I've used, called Q2 although I'm trying out Chemical Guys Silk Shine at the moment which is nice. Key to a good tyre dressing is very dry tyres, a product that is not too shiny and you'd don't want something with lots of 'fling' as it will be up the side of your car after a day.

Okay, I don't need any tyres but it's always useful to know of a "safe" tyre fitter!

Jim_mk7.5, ok thanks.

Could you elaborate on " ... All Purpose Cleaner"  Which brand?

"Key to a good tyre dressing is very dry tyres"  Noted, thanks.

I've been using Meguiars Endurance Gel on the P-Zeros which I disposed of yesterday.  Quite pleased with it.

"Gyeon do one of the best tyres dressing I've used, called Q2 although I'm trying out Chemical Guys Silk Shine at the moment which is nice."
I'll give both those a go in due course.
I prefer a matt/silk finish.

Most brands do one - I use GTechniq, dilute it in a spray bottle. Use it for all sorts of detailing jobs (door shuts, engine bay, wheels, seats, peddles, matts etc) and very handy round the house as well.

Yes, tyre shine should be matt/satin not too shiney!

It’s always good to see recommendations for tyre dressings because the products vary so much.
Some last, some don’t, some are messy, some not, some are a bugger to apply, some not.

Tyre fitter’s gunk wipes off with any shampoo or even a bit of washing up water with Fairy Liquid and a kitchen towel if between washes...

Which reminds me, I must get some new Michelins soon

each application typically lasts for a minimum of four weeks, even in wet weather. However, this can be extended to six weeks or more if it is layered and heated gently with a heat gun.

I have found this to be true and need to reorder this.

If you want a very good, long lasting, easy to apply, no sling tyre dressing,  I highly recommend Achem Hi Shine Long Life Tyre Dressing.  Don’t be put off by the name, it can be that can be glossy, matt or satin as you want depending on how you apply.  Fantastic stuff and having tried many tyre dressings this one always comes out top for me.  https://www.achemshop.co.uk/product/hi-shine/

I wasn’t wondering. Just pulled the wrong quote up.

Tyre dressing has been mentioned so simply posting up a good one if Peter is interested in them in general. 👍

ed30James, I've just done 100 miles dry and wet Motorway, A-roads and town on my new set of four.   Very impressed so far.  I noticed the difference straight away, smoother ride and less noise.  So really pleased with them.
They really do look exactly like Watts excellent photos, great.
