Title: My lil mk4 Golf GTI thread...
Post by: bobbarley on 19 February 2008, 21:07
Mods so far

To do list

I thought, damn it, why not have a blog styleee thread to write about my new Golf and what I decide ti buy for it, do to it, all that kinda thing.  I might never have thought of modding it in any way if it weren't for this damn forum

I'm picking the car up tomorrow afternoon (fingers crossed) from the garage, should have sailed through it's MOT today, and it's being valeted tomorrow morning.  Picture up as a quick reminder.

Can't decide whether to get an anni. valence for the front, or just buy an r32 front bumper instead.[/list]

I thought about that, but I'm not going to be doing any serious modding, such as replacing engines, or any crazy stuff :P

Just picked the car up, and OH MY GOD OH MY GOD, I love it!!!

The radio keeps going a little funny from time to time, not sure if it's because I'm in the city centre though, or not.  And the right front speaker wasn't working at first, but now it is, weird.  I'll keep an eye on these things, if they continue to happy I'll probably claim on the warranty the car came with.

Well it's insured, MOT'd and taxed.  Guy said he did an oil change too, which was nice of him.  They did however leave less than fumes in the petrol tank :)

I keep changing my mind, but am leaning more toward quiet.  I like the idea of it making a noise, but don't want people judging me as a chav :)

Hmmm no!  (Will hold boost for longer) But you will NEED one when you get her remapped because the standard dv will fall apart

First day to have the car during some decent sunlight, so I've taken a few snaps, I apologise it's quite dirty after just 3 days!!  You'll notice I've added smoked side repeaters onto it, I really like them! :)

Btw, I looked inside the engine and noticed two things.

1)  I appear to have some Audi parts inside it!!

2)  The dump valve looks REALLY hard to get to :(

you'll find there are a ton of parts with the audi logo, not just the coilpacks

but how is the dv hard to get to? its right there at the top infront of everything
Title: Re: My lil Golf GTI thread...
Post by: bobbarley on 23 February 2008, 12:53
It's right at the back, I can hardly reach at it, and there's some pipes in the way.  I think the jubilee clip at the bottom is going to be a RIGHT pain to get to.
Title: Re: My lil Golf GTI thread...
Post by: topher on 23 February 2008, 13:00
nahhh not at all. they're the fiddly vw clips and they WILL mash out of shape when you remove them (needle nose pliers to seperate is best, or just wedge a screwdriver in and bend it out) so replace with normal jubilee clips. all the hoses are flexible enough to be bent out of the way to get access, it really is a 10 minute job
Title: Re: My lil Golf GTI thread...
Post by: bobbarley on 23 February 2008, 13:20
And the whole lengh of 4mm silicon tubing will need replacing?  So I'll need 2 tiny jubilee clips as well.
Title: Re: My lil Golf GTI thread...
Post by: topher on 23 February 2008, 13:29
no aslong as it's still flexible and intact (they tend to go brittle due to the heat and crack, venting boost) it should still slip over the new one, although if you're going for a forge its a tight fit so you might want to put a bit of washing up liquid around the top nipple or sit the hose in a cup of hot water for a few minutes. you don't necessarily need to put a clip on it, although i did just for peace of mind.

That's something I'm gonna save up for!  I'm getting the dump valve next month.  Do I need anything else is preparation for a new dump valve?  I was thinking of buying a K&N induction kit, they seem to be a good thing to have.  Better air intake etc, slightly nicer engine noise.  Do they increase/decrease or make no difference to the mpg?

You will need two jubilee clips (Not sure what size its to replace the the one on the two main pipes)
You may also need some silicone hose for the top vacume hose as this tends to go brittle and snap (after years or being heated and cooled) 4mm ask for it when you order you DV. :afro:

Which ever air filter you go for MAKE SURE its not oil based!!

I agree mate but if your filter is oil based it WILL clog up the maf sensor which  IIRC costs about £90  :undecided:

Well before I buy it I'll give them a ring and check.  They have different kits for different cars, so I would imagine the one for the 1.8T would do no harm to it.  It looks like it's possible to fit an induction kit oneself, but I really do have 0% knowledge of fiddling with cars!

I lad on here had water sucked up through his modded air intake (blew the engine) and wrote off his car, the insurance nearly didn't pay out because he didn't tell them about it!!

Well the next two things on my list are the dump valve, then induction kit, then I'll probably save to re-map the thing.  God know what it will all do to my insurance! :P

Then I'm considering upgrading the brakes as they're actually worse than the ones I used to have on my C2 VTS.  You'd think better brakes would lower your insurance a bit, bet it doesn't though :)

Well you see my dad's Mondeo ST is 224bhp.  I strongly believe that if I can get my Golf close to that, it'll actually be faster due to the extra weight of his car :)

That sounds like a great idea! Your Golf should always beat him on handling regardless of what mods you choose.

Don't forget to possibly upgrade your brakes... I put Black Diamond discs and Track pads on mine... Nice and grippy. Useful for my GTi which doesn't have ASR or ESP

I rate OEM brakes tbh, if i upgrade im going 312mm r32 brakes, aot of aftermarket ones wear donwn really quickly or discs warp!

That sounds like a great idea! Your Golf should always beat him on handling regardless of what mods you choose.

You're having a laugh aren't you?
Prejudice's aside, the Mondeo has one of the best fwd chassis of any modern family car - it is truly class leading.
This cannot be said for the Mk4 Golf, regardless how much fondness we hold for them, you need to be realistic.
Mondoes have always been praised for their handling, and, in general (R32 aside) the handling of the Mk4 Golf has been slated.
Unless the golf undergoes serious chassis upgrades the Mondeo will be the better handling car of the pair.
I'm not a fan of Modeo's (I once had one as a company car - yes, I was Mondeo man) but you can't knock the car Ford have produced...

mk4's handling is good once you got a set of coilovers and a strut brace

I guess you have a point. I know which car I'd bet on though. And it still wouldn't have a Ford badge on it. But then I've never owned a Mondeo. Driven plenty (sadly not including the Titanium X) and tbh I don't know where you're coming from. Oh well, it takes all sorts...

Funny though, if the Mondeo is sooo good, plus fairly cheap, plus handling great and speed good then how come none of us have them...

It's ok, I'm only messing. The ST is a stunning car.

I've been thinking guys.  I want to get new bumpers eventually, and I need to get my spoiler sprayed and fitted.  The thing is the cars 9 years old, I imagine the black paint will have faded some.  Do you think it'll be noticable if I but brand new diamond black parts onto the car?

I'm no expert, but if your paint has been kept in good condition then before you stick it on spend a day detailing the paint (wash, clay, wax) it should be fine :) (It's not like your car is a mk1 golf!)

So I've fitted all the new handles except the drivers one.  I got it off, but it looks as if there's a wood effect piece that goes on the back of the handle as it were, see the picture.  The new kit doesn't come with this piece, and if I use the old bit the wood is visible :(

Hi bobbarley I'm totally new to this site an was reading through your thread an the car looks gr8  I'm currently looking at gettin a Golf 1.8T (150bhp) or the C2 VTS an I see you use to have one. Would you recommend them as you have had both . Currently have a Lex IS200 Sport but it's gotta go due costs, age an other things.. Can you tell me which you feel is better an why, what sort of MPG do you get from the Golf?
I feel I'd obviously get more power an fun out of the golf, so much want a turbo. But worry that it will just cost the same as my current car lol with insurance an petrol etc where as the VTS is only group 8 etc lol..

Not sure if you PM people here so had to put the mssg in your thread get back to me thanks
Chris
Title: Re: My lil Golf GTI thread...
Post by: bobbarley on 06 September 2008, 20:20
Well, even if this weren't a VW forum, I'd still recommend the GTI over the VTS :)

The VTS is a lot of fun, it's a proper little hot hatch thing, and has lots of pep in it, but the power doesn't compare to the Golf to be honest.  When the GTI was standard, 150bhp, there wasn't a huge amount between them.  But now I've had the GTI re-mapped to close to 200bhp, it knocks spots off any VTS, whether it's a C2 or a Saxo etc.

Insurance on a C2 VTS is only group 8 I believe, lower than the GTI, so you will definitely be able to get a better quote on your insurance.  But VTS's are extremely difficult to mod, they just aren't as tunable as a GTI.

If you can afford it, get yourself a Golf 1.8T.  If you can't, you could get a C2 VTS and you probably wouldn't be disappointed, but to be honest I'd probably choose a Clio Sport over a VTS now :)

Next up on my list of tihngs to do is tyres for my new wheels, and US spec rear lights.  It'll have to look like a 4x4 for a while until I get some springs.

Then I'll get the ARB and bushes sorted, and probably get some Eibach springs fitted at the same time.

The only up side is I don't need the ARB yet, MOT isn't until February I believe.  Then I just need what, £125 for the springs.  £250 for some tyres, then it's going to be about £500 to get everything fitted!

Gonna take the car to the MOT with the rear brakes as they are, as I think VW were lying when they said they would fail, there's LOADS of pad and disc left.

£500 to get everything fitted??? i'd shop around mate - ARB is probably a couple of hours and the springs are around 30 minutes per corner

don't pay £500 whatever you do!!! have you got a quote from Awesome??

That's based on using Awesome mate.  They want about £270 just to replace the bushes, or £470 to replace bushes and ARB.  I can get the price down a bit as I'm supplying my own ARB, but then I need to add on the cost of fitting springs.  Plus I need four tyres fitting and balancing.

my local VW DEALER only charged me £50 to replace my ARB bushes mate - they're taking the urine!!!   got the invoice to prove it!!

Figured it might save a few quid getting the springs done at the same time, as it might help round up some of the time, and they'll be taking bits of the front apart anyway!

And, 18's without lower springs looks crap.

Got a response from Awesome.

Me:

"I was in a month or two ago getting my front brakes upgraded, and the mechanic checked and confirmed my ARB and control arms were shot.  I got a quote off you for the work, just getting those parts fixed with standard bits.

I've got an Eibach front ARB coming soon, and plan to get some Eibach springs as well to drop the car a little.

Could I get a quote on fitting the front ARB (own), springs (own) all around, and replacing the bushes in the control arms with Powerflex (would buy from you) ones please?

Car is a '99 Golf GTI"

Awesome:

" hi there,

In doing all the work together you will save on the alignment and some time here and there, so the total labour for doing all the work (including geo setup) would be £340.75+VAT and £67.10+VAT for the powerflex bushes."

Neil usually charges £30 for fitting the dial, and doing miles to empty and illuminated needles.

Subtle little difference.  I had had to shorter the slack as it were a tad as it was getting stuck in reverse, but all gears work now.  Seems stiffer in each gear now when changing.

Thank you

I've tried every black mk4 being broken on eBay that's a reasonable distance.  Need some time to try salvage yards.  So far had no luck though.

Which bits are you after? I've just swapped my wood trim for black. Most of the old trimis scratched, but the left and right pieces that go either side of the stereo are fine if they're any use to you?

I changed the front discs and pads today.  I've never done it before, so was really chuffed with the achievement!   Went really well, took a few hours mind, but I was learning as I went along.  I did manage to scratch one of my wheels though, and one of my ratchet attachment things snapped!!

Look at the old discs, they're a year, maybe a year and a half old.  Rust everywhere, even on the face of the discs, and the edges are so rusted you can brake bits off with your hands!

Not a good shot but the new ones fitted.  Lovely sexy new EBC discs and the new redstuff pads over on the left, matching the callipers nicely.

Little tip - don't bump your for sale thread daily.  It makes you look desperate

Also stick it on Gumtree and Adtrader.  As I've said before you'll get zero to little interest from the forums

I paid £11 for my ad trader advert and sold the car within 3 days

Track rod end is £13 from Eurocarparts I fitted two today, took and hour to fit and to track

Track rod ends are a complete pain in the ass, would definitely take it to a garage for that.  Last time I tried I couldn't get it to come off, required the use of a blow torch to heat the thing up until it glowed red to get it off.  That was on a Golf 3 years younger than mine

Track rods and ends were replaced on Tuesday, £60 at a local garage (not ATS!) and he did a great job.  Gator is turns out is actually fine, it just need a new stap putting onto the end which he did for me.  Took her into National today for wheel alignment (50% off voucher).  So paid £15 to get the alignment sorted, which was apparently veeeery out

Mate if you saw the condition of the paint.  Plus the bumper isn't exactly fixed on correctly since my accident, fair bit of paint missing as well.

Got the air con done this week, all went well, lovely and icy cold   Just ordered a set of blinds for the rear windows and boot, 20% off at the moment, bargain!

Took her toVolkfest and back this weekend.  Didn't miss a beat, and 37mpg as well!

MOT was today, failed on two things. Fog light bulb was gone, and NSF track rod ended needed replacing. If that's all that's wrong with a 14 year old Golf I can't complain too much! They sorted it all within a few hours and passed it the same day.

In other news, she's up to 57k on the clock now!

Well the sad news is that my lovely Golf will be going this weekend.  On the up side she's going to someone on the forum who is going to spent time doing her up and hopefully get her back to her former glory.

So to recap.  I owned the car for 7 years, and in that time only managed to cover 39k lol.  I replaced wheels/tyres many times, but I only actually managed to wear one ONE tyre, yes just one.

I'm really going to miss the car, but that's life I suppose!
