Spacesaver pressure
« on: 06 April 2019, 16:30 »
Checked the pressure on my spacesaver for the first time today ( i’ve had the car 3 months) and noted that it was deflated. I filled it to the stated 60 psi and put it back.
Question is- are spare wheels checked and inflated to the required pressure at pdi, or are they kept under inflated for some reason ( save weight?).
My only other thought is there may be a slow leak. Any thoughts appreciated.

Not too sure some extra air will make any difference to the weight...

Just keep an eye on it and see if it goes down.

They should be checked at PDI. Whilst it's not a requirement to carry a spare, if you do, it's an MOT failure if it's flat or bald or damaged.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Haha, yeah- on reflection the weight suggestion probably a bit dim- it certainly felt heavier when I put it back, I thought there may be some perverse industry incentive to keep kerb weight down a fraction!
Most likely a sloppy pdi but i’ check again in 2 weeks
Thanks both.

60 psi? Sounds a lot.

I think I need to check my tyres and spare tyre pressure too after reading this.

The sticker inside my filler cap/flap is pretty much non exsistant, not sure how that would come away?!?

What pressure is recommend for mk7 Gti’s (non performance pack)? On the 4 fitted wheels and the spare? I’m running standard 18 wheels.

Thanks

It’s actually moulded into the tyre wall. Narrow tyre = high bearing load.

Recommended pressure is 38- though you will see discussion on here that 38 is too high- and 60 for the space saver. I’ve been checking pressures and oil regularly but hadn’t bothered checking the spare until now - definitely worth doing

Recommended pressure for 18” tyres on the Mk7 non PP was 36psi. I used to run mine at 34psi, with no ill effects.
