G60 VR6 Clutch Upgrade.
« on: 02 August 2008, 20:12 »
The 1.8T comes with a dualmass flywheel which is recommended to be replaced when you replace the clutch.

The standard set up is not ideal if you have engine mods - remap exhaust etc.

The popular alternative is to get rid of the dualmass flywheel (Which is very expensive to replace) and replace the clutch so it can handle more power.

Once replaced with the G60 flywheel you wont ever need to replace it again :afro:

The singlemass flywheel is from a Corrado G60 (Also slightly lighter than the standard dualmass.) and the clutch is from a Golf MK3 VR6.

Its a straight forward bolt on job - For 5 speed models.

*Note this set up Will NOT fit the newer 6 speed 1.8T's.*

Please Note:
This set up WILL make the clutch VERY light.

You will need:

Corrado G60 flywheel vw part no: 028105269bx

The flywheel is £88.38 + vat
There is also a £25 surcharge if you are not exchanging the flywheel (Which if doing this conversion you wont be!!)

*Edit*

Thanks to Ivor Mk4 Turbo - keith

Apparently, the G60 fly is the same as found in the Mk3 GTi 16v (ABF), so you can buy one from a scrappy for a tenner, then use it to exchange for a new one at VW (£80).  Then just buy the VR6 Sachs clutch for ~£100 - Job done!

OR ABF flywheel part number: 037 105 273 C

Golf MK3 VR6 3 in 1 Clutch kit - You can get one here: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/g3clutch.php

I paid a bit extra because i wanted Sachs.

Sachs 3 in 1 kit - £119. Sachs Part no: 3000384001

Tho if you are not bothered about the make you can get one from eurocarparts or GSF a bit cheaper (Around £80 LUK are also a good clutch.)

The release bearing for the VR6 is the same as the 1.8T.

Bolts: You need shorter bolts for the flywheel vw part no:  N90206103 x 6

And for the clutch pressure plate bolts vw part no: N10101001 x 6
 £15.86 for all 12 bolts.

You can also buy this set up complete from Ebay, be careful though and use a tried and tested seller :afro:

Hmmm, my brother just got his clutch replaced at a cost of £499. Is that pretty expensive or is it me ? They did exactly as you mention changing the clutch for a VR6 item and got rid of the dualmass flywheel.

Thanks ;)
