This is an interesting link comparing BHP and power to wait ratio's of the Mk1 Golf GTI to the Mk2, 3 and 4.
The old Mk1 still takes some beating

rich your dead right it was very good reading very intresting to see that such an old class car (standard) has got all the potential to whoop its modern day equivilant........

So the trick would be to drop a 1.9TDI into a mk1!
Mildly modified and you get 185bhp/264 lbft - that would scare a few other drivers!!!
