gti 8v......HELP
« on: 15 February 2003, 22:31 »
Hi everyone.

A few months ago I bought my first golf , its a MK II 8v on a  J plate, Ive got to admit  it truly is the best car I've ever driven,
As I didn't spend alot buying it I've disided to spend a few quid doing it up as its had a hard life.
I've had the engine rebuilt encluding new pistons, new piston rings , new valves and a new engine block.
The guy whom did the work told me that some one had previusly spent mega bucks tuning the engine and also fitted a race cam.( lovely)
Now the engines sorted it runs sweet, although I do have to be nice to it for 1000 miles.
It has become clear however that the car now needs a new gearbox as the gear bearings are forever wineing in gears 1, 2, and 3, I would apreciate any advice on which gearbox would suit my golf.

Have you tried changing the gearbox oil? Might find puting some synthetic oil in there will make a difference.

Thanks for that I'll give it a go, not sure it will do the trick though sounds to me like the bearings are on the way out,
I'll let you know :)

If that doesn't work, you should be able to pick up a good second hand one for between ?40 to ?90.
Plenty of them about.
Good luck.
