Title: Those with a remap, who did you go with? Who do you think are best?
Post by: sjw on 17 July 2019, 10:39
Got called out on golfmk7.com for saying that Revo were one of the top tuners here in the UK; the list given to me of those who are better were as follows (in no particular order):

Ecotune
Jbs
MRC
R-tech
APR
Unicorn

Of these, I've heard of APR, Unicorn and MRC. I wouldn't say that any of those apart from possibly APR could be argued to be bigger/better than Revo. For example, Unicorn only have one outlet, so I don't think they can be classed as one of the best. I'm sure the tunes are good, but best surely has to have all factors considered.

I was also told that I should "never speak about tuning again" as I said I hadn't heard of R-tech, let alone anyone who has a GTI tuned by them. Obviously I can look them up and now say I have heard of them but I'd like to know if anyone was tuned by them?

I understand this is all a matter of opinion to an extent, it just got me curious.

I think REVO are very good, if I tune my R I'll be using REVO

I've used Revo before on my Cupra and had no issues. I would always consider them one of the top tuners as well. I currently have a DTUK box, but were I to go for a map I would use either Revo or Racingline. I think that so long as you are happy with the results that's all that matters.
Whoever made the comment about you not knowing about tuning as you hadn't heard of R-Tech must be child. Who cares if there is a brand you have or haven't heard of? There are plenty of companies starting up all the time; eg Mountune's new line of support for VAG.

You can overthink tuning to the N’th degree, same as anything else I guess.

I’ve had around a dozen remaps and tuning boxes from various tuners over a very long period of time.
The remaps on the early TDI and the first LPT turbo VAG petrol engines (1.8t) were quite simple affairs and the mappers have had to keep abreast with all the emissions hardware and software as each new series of engines get released.

I’ve no idea what the thread was on golfmk7.com as I’ve not been over there for years having been focussed elsewhere but Internet forums have always been full of self professed experts who don’t get out much.

I’m far from an expert, just an end user with a bit of an understanding built up over the years.

Tuners vary in size, resources and time. REVO have grown to be a biggie and we’re originally an offshoot of APR’s UK arm, if I remember correctly one of the main guys was Mark Yates who previously headed MYTech who were a well respected tuner of earlier generation GTI’s and VR6’s. I might be wrong, it was a long time ago now.
God I feel old.

REVO & APR have much bigger global resources so can take their time developing maps all over the world using dozens of vehicles in Beta testing. They have an extensive network and decent(ish) customer care.
So are they best?

Some of the other much smaller tuners might offer a more personal experience or be cheaper, they’ll have intimate knowledge of their product in most cases. I’ve been out in a Unicorn tuned R and it drove beautifully, custom tuned for a factory like delivery but with the wick turned up a bit.
Is that the best? How many development miles went into that tune on the open roads rather than some hours on a rolling road?

We could go on forever. The best is the best for you. Good local support will be more important to some, pops, bangs, whooshes and being the fastest car up to 130mph on the local bypass using launch control will be more important to others, and everything in between.

Yeah I understand it's all subjective. What riled me was the fact that a bunch of people form the US were trying to tell me that I was wrong about the current state of affairs in the UK. I don't know

Whoever made the comment about you not knowing about tuning as you hadn't heard of R-Tech must be child. Who cares if there is a brand you have or haven't heard of?

That's what I thought. It's one of the worst forums I've seen for people thinking their opinions somehow carry more weight than others'

That’s one of the reasons I’ve historically avoided that forum.
I used to find it ok for finding out bits of information and trying to weed out the misinformation from our D-Day cousins as the Americans still have that Hot Rod mentality of buy it, dismantle it, uprate everything then argue about it.
The whole forum could be like a Wild West saloon!

Don’t get me wrong, there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on there but it was always a bit too volatile for my liking. Mind you it’s been like that on here at times over the years and no doubt with the release of the mk8 there will be plenty sparking off, the mk7 has seen everyone mellow and mature just like the mk7 itself!!

I went with REVO, I visited my local REVO dealer again yesterday for an oil and filter which I do every 6 months. 16K miles later, all good...

I'll be getting mine mapped soon. Got a few pennies put to a side but can't make my mind up on who to go with. Unicorn or Revo more than likely.

I'm after something that'll still give me good MPG at motorway speeds with a bit more poke when I feel like having a bit of fun.

I'd love to keep the car on the standard map but when I put it in sport the remap kicks in, if that makes sense? Not sure if it's possible though.

How many development miles went into that tune on the open roads rather than some hours on a rolling road?

This is the very reason we sell Revo software. Tested globally over hundreds of hours on multiple cars. Custom tuning has its place, but in my experience its more hassle than its worth when dealing with cars with the basic stage 1 or 2 bolt on upgrades, even stage 3 and 4 on the MQB platform.

That's debatable. The GTI and R manual clutch barely copes with stock torque. My own unmodified R's clutch slipped on a few occasions during cold weather at just 23k miles. Plenty of examples of people experienced clutch slip after getting their GTI up to R levels of power and exceeding R levels of torque.

If you get regular clutch slip, you'll damage your flywheel as well as your clutch - even greater expense.

I keep doing alot of research on which tuner to go with for my Clubsport (DSG), even though i'm holding off on performance mods until my Warranty is up in March 2020. I'm going more towards the custom tune - MRC, but looking at having a TVS DSG Map.

Revo are one of the top tuners, had it on my fiesta 1.0 auto and that really was a nice smooth map & tbf the customer service was brilliant because the map for my car was not really something they did on big scale (technically it was bit of a custom map as was a bit back and forward).

I've had Revo stage 1 on mine about a year now.
The map is great, feels well.spread over the rev range, with a strong pull at around 2500rpm.

Mines a manual and the clutch went pretty quick after having it done, once I had a helix clutch fitted the map felt even better as it was obviously putting the power down a lot better.

I've also got Revo wheels and lower torque mount and can vouch for those products also being of really high quality.

Is certainly highly recommend them. I've even called them a few times for general queries and they've been really helpful and happy to spend time chatting.

I had a bluefin remap for a while, the clutch started to slip when in 5th or 6th gear with full throttle.

This was a couple of years ago, I removed the remap and it has been fine ever since.

Running APR software for a few years now no issues.
However Manual owners at some point you will need an uprated clutch.

My 7.5 GTI has gone into Riemans today for the uprated organic Sachs clutch and Racingline stage 1 OEM+ software.

I've only done 17,000 miles from new but the clutch already shows signs of slippage and the flywheel was knackered, so also being replaced. Just shows how weak the manual clutch's are in our cars.

Anyway … can't wait to pick her up later. Will report back with my findings once I've had a good drive!

Speaking personally, I’ll be going for either...

Revo for an SPS as that’s proven and a good balance.
or
DMS for a custom map which can also include a DSG map (shift speed, paddle reaction speed, clamp pressure increase, target RPM on downshifts for rev matching etc).

Picked my car up last night, annoyingly I didn’t get the map installed as my installer needs an update patch to be able to map the MK7.5 ECU’s as slightly different to the MK7.  So, I’ll pop in next week sometime and get it done as we ran out of time.

Super happy with the Sachs organic clutch, nowhere near as heavy or stiff to use as I had original feared from reading a few reviews. That said I can imagine it would become a drag in continued stop, start traffic. The clutch is super positive and feels great to use. Even better the new clutch and flywheel have had the effect of quieten down my Racingline lower engine mount. The car feels amazing to drive, just can’t wait for the map to be fitted now!

Why don't you give these guys a visit, you're in Yorkshire, aren't you?

Don't fancy a dyno run do you? A guy I know has just installed an awesome new dyno at his place near Barnsley so could probably sort a deal out - itching to know if the 245 P is more potent than stated!

That dyno looks really smart Jim!

Both tend to do a black friday deal but you will obviously have to wait a couple of months. I think last year Revo did 25% off - you had to pay in November and get the work done by the end of January.

I'd be up for a Dyno run Jim, absolutely! Let's see how many we can get and we can organise a meet.

I've used CLP in the past and I would definitely go to them for the remap but I'm leaning more towards Revo if I'm honest, don't know why.

Ideally I'd like to go out with someone who has Revo stage 1 then have a go with somebody who has APR stage 1.

I really want to go with someone who has a dyno & custom. I was going more towards MRC - about hour n half drive? would you said that's too far?

I'm wanting a TVS TCU remap though, which guess be done at a different place.

Don't seem be many with dyno/custom in Herts, more flash maps.

I think I'll end up going Revo simply because of the amount of research and development they've out into their map. My other option would be Unicorn in Stockport, they get rave reviews on other forums. Anyone on here used Unicorn?

I Finally got around to having the Racingline Stage 1 OEM+ map installed last Thursday.

Super smooth and stock like but with some serious extra pace. Overall, I couldn’t be happier.

As promised Matt from Racingline added extra pops and bangs which is switchable using the sports mode button.

When activated I get lovely bangs just like a DSG fart at full throttle gear changes and on the overrun I get lovely crackles. I must admit it’s very additive, for how long I don’t know but then it is switchable.

I like the idea of switchable sound effects. Rather than permanent rally car noise you can employ the “there’s a time and a place” attitude.

So I finally got the opportunity to go out in a stage 2 GTI on Monday by total chance. During a steady drive I noticed that my car was considerably slower than the grey one with the black prets in the picture below. We pulled over to talk and admire each others cars and that's when I found out it was running APR stage 2 software on top of a number of hardware mods - me being me I asked if it was ok to go for a ride, so we did.

We then went to Haz Motorsport in Dewsbury where they offer various Racingline products including remaps. The owner talked me through stage 1 and stage 2 maps for the GTI when he mentioned his own S3 was running stage 3 including Racingline's stage 3 brake setup. The S3 was savage, especially from a standing start and it stopped just as good.

I think a stage 1 remap would be perfect for how I use the car and also I'm not keen on going overkill on the mods. I like to keep things subtle.

Sounds good. The black Prets really suit the GTI as well.

340 bhp GTI, 490 bhp S3, 230 bhp GTI.

Now that looks like my idea of a fun day!

300+ BHP with the smaller GTI turbo must be one hell of a responsive car at normal give and take road speeds.

But I expect that Audi must be quite something! A new level of fast!

As above, the Prets look good on the GTI but I think the Belvedere/Quantara wheels on yours look really good. I hated them on my CS because the rear spoiler makes them look too small. On a regular GTI they look just right.

The Audi was stupid quick. I've got a video that I won't post for obvious reasons but it did 0-60 in well under 4 seconds. It literally pinned me back in the seat. It's actually one of Racingline's development cars.

Seriously got me thinking of just saying bollocks to the remainder of the warranty and getting a remap when the deals start popping up in a month or so.

Also, you make a good point regarding the Belvedere alloys. They do look small on the Clubsport and I think you're probably right about the spoiler making them look small.
