how does he "use" these chips tho?! do they not need soldering into the ecu?!

Push fit type chips in the later ECUs very easy to install.

The 0 261 200 185 was the only one  on that year with the chip soldered in. I have few of the 185 ecus somwhere I will have a look for one for you, they will only get binned.
