I have play in my steering wheel with engine switched off would this be the rack or tie rods

Could be tie rods, track rod ends even ball joints and steering racks.

Have a look at track rods and ends as a start.

As above really, tie rods are much more likely than the rack.

I have new tie rods just the case of making time to change them gotta get new subframe anyway

I've got a pair arriving tomorrow for mine...not looking forward to trying to get the old ones off :sad:

I have done them on a mk3 should be the same hardest part it's getting the spanner in unless u have the proper tools I gotta change the subframe as arb bolts are rounded
