Been Looking For A How To Thread For These For Years & Never Found One.... So Thought I would have a play and do one....
I had a couple of very rare rear mechs on a car that a guy was desperate to have but I knew that they didn't work so thought sod it - Lets have a go - Nothing to loose!!

Remove The 2 Screws & Washers for the Motor....

Gently Ease The Motor Away - DON'T try and pull it all the way out!!

Remove the 2 x 16mm rubber bolts...

Remove the 3 x T25 Torq screws...

Take Off The Metal Cover/Top - revealing the wire winder mech, careful not to pop off the runners with the springs, or you will have to mess about rewinding them on to the reel... Easy to do just time consuming...

CAREFULLY turn the whole unit over...

Pop a flat screwdriver between the plastic middle & Alloy base and free off the bottom of the mech;

Look at all the Crud around the mech;

You can now remove the Motor & Worm Drive...

I now connected the motor to a spare battery to make sure it was working... I also sprayed some WD40 on it first... DON'T Use Grease or you'll ruin it...

I would be tempted to replace the plastic gear cog I'm sure that would be a major wear point?

Rebuilding The Mech.....
Grease Up the gearwheel & casing...

Carefully Turn it over and grease up the other side...

Pop the metal cover back on - don't tighten up the screws just yet....

Clean up the motor end with WD40 & Grease Up The Worm Drive...

Push the motor back in... This may need a little bit of help - tap it on a bench....

Also Note That I have kept the mech's apart so the worm gear slots back in and mesh's properly...

You now have to use the motor screws and washers to pull the motor back into the mech properly..

Good job. Do the cables wrap around the yellow cog a few times or just once? Had an issue with mk4 ones and they were wrapped a few times.

It depends on where the glass catch is!!! top or bottom = 3-1 ish so one has 3 turns of wire but the other only has one.
I found that if the wires pop out you have to put the yellow centre back in to the holder and wind the wire back on to tension back the springs...
Needless to say the motor needs to be out...
Was a bit time consuming and difficult due to the fact that I'd greased the unit up in the 1st inst!!

Footnote;
If I was doing another one I would pop on some gasket sealant to the base unit and the motor....

Good write up, I replaced the cables and cogs on my Galaxy last year, took a few hours, but mostly because of the tension involved and having to wrap the cable round the cog a few times because it popped off. Once you know what you're doing it's easier :smiley:

Don't think thats needed as they seem to just seize up due to dried up grease....
I remember years ago learning about a silicon grease that we were selling and the manufactures said it would last a minimum of 10 years - maybe VW used a similar product and we are now getting to the point where this grease has reached the end of it's life and just needs replenishing.
I cant see how you would wear out one of the cogs unless the motor has been slipping or been over run, but I guess the wires would fail before the gears as they are so tightly meshed....
But I stand to be corrected...

I put a full set of lecky windows in my 5 door when I was doing the engine conversion. I took all of the motors apart, checked and greased them before installing because I had heard they get crusty like this inside. One of them didn’t work so thought the motor was up the creek, I took it apart and magnets looked good and there was no play etc so wasn't convinced it was a gonner (it's a right hassle to put back together thought!). I looked to see how much replacements are and thought chuff that, took it to a local old school HiFi repair man and he found that the resistor on the motor had burnt out, £5 later a new resistor had been soldered on and was as good as new! :laugh:

How did you prise the plastic cog away from the spindle it's on, I'm scared of breaking it if I apply too much pressure

used a small screwdriver and gently prized it off.

That worked with one but not the other, greased around it in the end as I'm sure it would snap before it worked free.

Have you tried soaking it in WD40 overnight??? then gently prizing it in 90 degree movements. I had one that was seized like this and got it off with trial & effort but don't force it as you can't get replacements..

Tried that but it still wouldn't budge. In the end I just sprayed loads of grease in the spindle and it span freely when I connected the motor. As you say there's no replacements so better safe than sorry I thought.
