What a great car for a 23 year old. If I remember right I payed £600 to insure a 205 gti in 1996 ( i was 23 then). I can remember spending hours shopping for insurance. £82 per month sounds pretty good to me.

My first 'quick' car was a Cavalier SRi 130 in 1989 when I was 19. I'm pretty sure that the insurance was about £300 for me and my Dad as a named driver. Those days you went to your trusted broker who got out his big book of rates from a handful of companies to look up the premium.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

That was a pretty quick car back in the day, remember being 17 and a lad at school in the year above me having one and thinking it was rather cool.

Update:  He's completely smitten with the car, absolutely loves it.  On the subject of insurance premiums "back in the day" my first GTI was an 18-month old Mk1, which I bought in 1983, and from memory it cost me £165 to insure.  But that was Fully Comp.

At the time, you could buy a GTI in any colour you liked in the UK, as long as it was black, red, or white.  Or possibly silver.  Mine was Helios Blue, a dark(ish) metallic blue, bought new by a Captain in the BAOR (British Army of Occupation in the Rhine, or something like that), in full UK spec, even the wipers were mounted correctly.  When he'd finished his tour of duty he brought it back to the UK.

I've never seen another in that colour, but there must be some, surely?

£300 then is about £750 in today’s money according to my inflation calculator. Looks like you did pretty well at 19.
It was a half day job for me yellow pages/ads in performance car magazine- phoning all the companies I could.
Mate of mine had mk2 and mk3 cavaliers- though his mk2 didn’t have an “i” badge!

Living in the sticks helped. It wasn't until I crashed my Mk3 Cav (twice) when my insurance went silly. £1600 to insure the Citroen ZX Volcane that followed when I was 23.

Washed her and the OZ rims too.

Also finally got round to fitting the BBS centre caps which have been sat there looking at me for weeks.

Subtle but like em over the VW ones that were on there.

Had to take my OH to an appointment in Kent today so a nice drive around the M25  then a good run down some A roads. Steady driving but not done with economy in mind, just fitting in with the conditions but thought this pretty good!

Overall for the return trip was just over 40mpg. A rather pleasent stop for lunch and a look at Scotney Castle with lovely blue skies and a bitter wind!
