Here is a basic list of what you will need to carry out the conversion into your beloved MK3
Iv not included prices as these vary.. but you are looking at a few thousand to do the job right.. or if you want me to price it up for you fitted into your car, send me a PM
This list is based on, if you are starting out with a GTI 8V as the base car
Best to start with a 16v as you will have many of the parts already
If the base car is a VR6. You will need a 16v Gearbox and clocks
If you start with a lower spec car you will also need in addition to the below, brake upgrade to at least 280mm early GTI / VR6 spec and decent pads to suit
THE LIST:
YOUR CHOUCE OF ENGINE, AGU, AMK, AUM BAM ETC (make sure it comes with all ancillaries inc Turbo)
ENGINE SIDE LOOM FROM DONOR CAR
ECU FROM DONOR CAR
02A GEARBOX FROM 16V MK3 ETC
REAR DRIVERS SIDE ENGINE BRACKET FROM ABF MK3 16V
FRONT ENGINE BRACKET FROM ABF MK3 16V
GEARBOX MOUNT BRACKET FROM ABF 6V MK3
HYDRO SET UP FROM GOLF MK3 16V GTI / VR6
(Including master clylinder, slave cylinder and piping)
GEAR SHIFTER / CABLES FROM GOLF MK3 16V ABF / VR6
ENGINE MOUNTS (ALL 3) FROM 16V GOLF / VR6 (your choice)
ABF FLYWHEEL
VR6 CLUTCH
16V STARTER MOTOR
CUSTOM DOWNPIPE
SPORTS CAT (If your car requires a cat)
2.5†BORE EXHAUST SYSTEM – JETEX
INTERCOOLER – UNIVERSAL FRONT MOUNT
BOOST PIPES FOR INTERCOOLER
WIRING LOOM MODIFICATION IF REQUIRED TO MAKE PLUG AND PLAY
IMMOBILIZER DEFEAT ON ECU
FORGE 007
SILICONE TIP
MAP SENSOR RELOCATION TUBE (MADE BY FORGE)
VARIOUS OTHER HOSES / BOLTS WILL BE NEEDED
INDUCTION KIT (Of Your Choice)
INDUCTION KIT RELOCATION (optional)
REMAP (Optional)
16v 160MPH CLOCKS (optional)
NEW CAMBELT (optional)
NEW WATERPUMP (optional)
TWIN RAD FAN FROM AIR CON EQUIPPED MK3 ETC (Optional)
SERVICE PARTS: OIL / FILTER / SPARK PLUGS/BRAKE FLUID
TURBO INSPECTION / REBUILD (optional)
MAF SENSOR REPLACEMENT (optional)
COOLANT BOTTLE FROM DONOR CAR , RECOMMEND BUYING NEW (optional)
EARLY CARS REQUIRE LATE CAR PEDAL BOX AND HYDRAULIC FLUID RESOVOIR
SOME ENGINES ARE DRIVE BY WIRE THROTTLE, SO YOU WILL NEED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FROM DONOR CAR
-
Also a map sensor and the fitting tube from somewhere like forge :) and if using the electronic pedal some sort of bracket will need making up
-
Yeah good point ill add this to the list...
you won't need the tube if you use the one that came with the engine as i did (but then i replaced with the forge one later due to relocation)
-
Nice post mate :)
-
sticky? (as 1.8t convertions are getting more popular, and lots of questions being asks as to whats needed)
-
What about rad,can you use 8v one or do you have to use twin fan 16v
-
You can just use the 8v GTI item
I used twin rad fan as the 16v car I used for some parts had one but it's not essential
I'll add it to the optional list tho all the same
-
HERO!
I will add this to my FAQ thread :)
Cheers!
-
DEFO STICKY!!!!!!!
I was going to ask someone to do this as its getting asked alot of times.
so good going kells
-

I'm gonna do this I think.
but I have just bought a gillard rotax chassis so the car will have to wait :lipsrsealed:
-
just noticed you put the forge 007p, the 008p is out now so maybe use that instead :)
-
just noticed you put the forge 007p, the 008p is out now so maybe use that instead :)
I think the 007p is still the better bet
-
007 all the way for me and this is what id recommend.. but its up to other people if they wish to choose another type or brand, as long as it works the same was as the 007 (recirculate) then all's well ..
-
008p is the new recirculating diverter valve from forge. Not meant as a replacement to the 007p but I've only read good things about it and it apparently performs better than the 007p. Holds boost longer, turbo spools quicker, etc
I still run a 007p as It's not imo £100 worth of improvement over the 007p, but if I was going from standard I would choose the 008 :)
-
BUMP!!!
Too many folk asking about this
Sticky this ??
-
STICKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Sticky FTW as about half of the mk3 owners are now doing these lol
-
Fingers crossed and funds permitting this'll be something il be looking towards sorting out at some point next year...hopefully.
-
Can I use the 2 liter 8 v driveshafts into a 16v box as going the conversion on a cabrio and it already had g60 brakes 4 stud
-
Yea mate they are the same
Mine is still on its 8v drive shafts. They were the same as the 16v ones
-
what would be the order of fit? ie old engine out, remove this remove that so on so on....
would you fit new lump then plumb in new loom or the other way round?
just a basic guide on how you approach things...
ps what size wheels do you have on that monster of yours
-
I can't give away all my secrets haha
but in a nutshell
Remove old engine
Fit brakets to new engine (where applicable)
fit Gearbox and new clutch kits etc (including bracket) to engine
wack engine in bay
Plumb in the wiring on the engine
plumb in the wiring to the fuse board to ECU
My rims are 8" x 16"
-
where would you get the immob defeat brad ?
-
where would you get the immob defeat brad ?
I know a guy that can do it mate. if you get stuck i can get the details for you
-
thinking/looking into this conversion cos im getting sick of the abf gremlins and looks like lots on the list come from a 16v so i have perfect starting base
just want to look about get as much info as i can look into various options and cost
then  think do i stick with the abf engine or ??
-
id get rid of ABF mate.. i just don't find them quick at all, infac ti found little difference between the 16v i had and he 8v engine that used to be in mine
but its gonna cost you a fair amount to do a 1.8T conversion (properly)
worth it tho
-
Likewise, I'm so bored of my ABF lump now.
-
the real question is what engine i know brad is gonna say s3 because thats what he has but what engine would be a good option agu,aum,.....??
-
TBH you don't need as much power as the S3 lump
AGU or AUM is fine
Or the Auq with its 180 bhp, (same engine as above basically but with a different standard map - once mapped they are all about the same)
AGU only has K03 so upgrade that tp the K03s and remap it and you will have over 200bhp and believe me it will fly and you will smile all day
So yea any of the above codes are good and readily available and don't brake the ££££££ like the S3 lumps do..
Its not about the BHP, its all about the torque
-
Its not about the BHP, its all about the torque
Until you mashup your clutch like i did :/
What torque can the VR6 clutch handle ?
-
well mine is near 300ilft and no issues
I'm running a sachs VR6 item with 16v Flywheel
My car goes back for more mapping on the 23rd
I wouldn't advise any cheap clutches tbh..
Whats the spec of your car ?
-
Spec is MK3 1.8t AGU with some nice upgraded internals and an IHI VF34
got 2 rr printouts, one from 2 years ago with nearly 360bhp and 412 Torque
the other one i got done a week before the clutch went, it showed a drop of 20hp and just 266 torque
So i've put my hand in my wallet and bought a flywheel and clutch that should handle 470 torque, just hope it's ok for daily driving.
Be nice to reclaim some of those torques
-
Yea mate they are the same
Mine is still on its 8v drive shafts. They were the same as the 16v ones
Hi mate lookd at the driveshafts there not big enough for the gearbox cups ?? What ones should I use ?? Are the mk3 gti ones longer ?? The car is a cabrio it's not classd as a gti
-

yeah mate use GTI ones, mine are the GTI ones, does not matter if they are 8v or 16v

U can tell I'd been up more than 24 hours lol I offerd the driveshafts up to the mk4 box lol
What throttle cable shal I use ???
-
how much work is it to alta the wiring loom? is this something you could do yourself? is just a case of changing a few connectors over or a bit more than that?...
thanks dan

a bit more than that haha
as for cable, try a mk2 1.3 cable

theres a ce2 wiring loom conversion guide on clubgti. Its for a mk2 ce2 fusebox but its the same fusebox as the mk3 and theres plenty of info in the thread relating to mk3s
http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=205887
There are also people around who can do it for around £100 if you provide the looms, rubjonny did mine and a very good job it was too, that guys a legend :afro:
-
so on that list all i need is the stuff with out the 16v beside?
so in essence every thing engine and engine wiring wise from a 1.8t,
was thinking of buying a 1.8t that had been crashed, but not sure the average price for a cat c/d
-
if you have a 16v then yeah you only need the 1.8t bits or the custom stuff, though its still a good idea to get some things like engine mounts new
-
hi guys.
one question thats been on my head is, why do got to take the dash out? Is it because of the wiring that goes to the fuse box or what?
-
you dont need to take the dash out
-
you do unless you have hands as big as a cat
its to get the looms through the tiny hole. with dash in place its almost impossible to do
i also took the opportunity to tidy all my wiring behind the dash and it made it easier to do the pedal box modifications etc
its not hard to remove dash.. makes the job much more simple
-
I found it very easy to get the loom though to the fusebox, but I guess it would be easier to see what you were doing with the dash out. Wouldn't say it was necessary though
-
Very helpful thread guys
Has helped me get things sorted in my head
Cheers
-
I don't remove the dash or even get in the car tone honest
-
What gearbox code do I need to look for? CDA?
-
Hi guys, just getting the ball rolling on my mk3 project, F17 i've not got enough posts yet (total VW newb) can you PM for a chat about doing the conversion, cheers bud.
-
What gearbox code do I need to look for? CDA?
I'd recommend getting a diesel box, I used a DPA in mine originally and although it was good at first once used to it the gears start to feel very short. Since changing to an ASD diesel box he gears feel much more natural for the engine, and there is no noticeable loss in power (despite what people will tell you )
-
Very helpful thread :) just one question though will my 2.0 8v gearbox be any good?
-

U could use it but I wouldn't advise it
-

best to use the Gearbox from a 16v car, suits it perfectly..
if you wanna go one better change the final drive to a VR6 item and fit a Limited slip Diff.. I'm just in the process of doing this
-
Thanks guys :) Much appreciated i will get a 16v box then :)
-
Great thread! I now have a 16v, perfect for a cheeky 20vt conversion :)
-
does anyone know whether the mk3 vr6 starter motor is the same as the abf 16v one?
watching a few on ebay at the minute thats all, thanx
-
does anyone know whether the mk3 vr6 starter motor is the same as the abf 16v one?
It is different
-
thanx for that fella!
-
Great thread! I now have a 16v, perfect for a cheeky 20vt conversion :)
Yes boi. Let me know if do, your not far!
-
I have an AGU lump ear marked as soon as my mate replaces his with an engine he is rebuilding :)
-
how much did it cost you in parts etc for doing this
-
depends what your'e starting with
-
Can u use mk3 vr mounts if the car was a vr before ??
-
Great thread, I have a full mk4 that the clutch went on and had a small amount of damage to the rear that is sitting at home collecting dust! Think I just found what I need to do with it
-
One other thing, I have mk4 engine spacers and shallow sump for extra clearance. Is there any chance the engine spacers will fit the mk3? or if I had some made they work or is there any restrictions of the engine? The ones I have are 25mm.
Thanks Joe
-
is it a diy job to convert your loom?
surely you just have splice in the connectors for the 16v items you use?
or is there a bit more to it?
-
Talk to myself then shall i?
-
its a list of parts thread mate, was never meant to be a "how to" thread from my point of view anyhow
However, if you want a OEM job, I can fit the engine for you including OEM ECU. looms etc :smug:
-
that would be boring! the idea of doing it yourself is you learn and smile once its running
would be a great help if you could sort the loom out for me once im ready? ecu is already done..
or point me to the HOW TO sort your loom thread..
-
No one does a how to loom thread because they all want your money and will charge to do it instead of helping and showing pics etc.
