"Cambox cover is leaking a bit of oil"
« on: 02 September 2007, 21:24 »
Or so the garage told me when they returned the keys after servicing my 1985 8v GTI.
I'm new to all this and don't have a clue: is this dad, an expensive fix or whatever? Did a forum search but came up with nothing, so apologies if this is an old chestnut.
Cheers folks....

nah easy job mate just the rocker cover needs to come offf the top of the head and be replaced with a cork or rubber gasket, wont do much harm although you will need to check oil a more regularly and dirty the engine. Worth doing though, think the gaskets are about 12 quid or something plus an hours labour, depends if you want to have a go yourself?
i must buy a new car!

Will do.
Seems to be in good order - bloke at my regular garage was quite impressed. Exhaust now secure too...
Will investigate fixing or replacing the door soon and also want to have a go at repairing the seat bolster.
I love it.....

yeah the rubber ones are the mark 3 ones you have to change the studs, not too bad a job with some mole grips or stud removers.

Easy job this one bud, I reckon you can do it yourself with the help of the haynes manual.
