'79 mk1 golf........should i buy it??
« on: 05 September 2005, 22:03 »
found a '79 mk1, 3 door, no sunroof, 60k, been writen off due to a ridiculous bump in it's ass. car has been sat for two years gathering rust and moss. gone in usual places, back of sills, wings, petrol cap. my heart's in it, but should my head be??

any feedback much appreciated.

also, gonna have to give up mk1 polo and mk2 golf to fund it.

let me know what you think

cheers, russ

mines a 1980 and as you would imagine due to 10 years more on the road than other cabs it has needed sufficient work doing.

the best advice i would give is get an expert garages opinion on the state (mainly engine wise) and what would need doing in the near future etc... mine had 78k on the clock, in some ways shows it was driven less and more work needs doing etc

im not really fussed about the engine, it's more the shell im worried about. I went to have a proper look around it yesterday, took the camera and so got some pics from underneath. after taking today to think about it, i think im going to have to get stuck in. i just keep thinking about the end result!

All I can say is - how many people have a pre 80 Mk1 golf...?? not many and I don't see alot of them at shows any more.

I'd get it... you can get a polo or mk2 any time...

I would love to have a really old skool mk1....

The end result will be amazing and everyone loves the old skool mk1's.... it started the VW's off...

as long as you style in subtly, it will look fantastic, i was thrilled when mine was at the point where i was happy.

theres some fantastic examples on www.matey-matey.com

just bought a 78 myself. it is a 1.1 and i have to say rust wise it is better than my 82 gti. it hasnt gone in the usual places but is a bit rusty in the windscreen pillars. got some g60 steels for it just waiting on the coilovers and i will have a sh1thot little rat looker.
