evo magazine buying guide
« on: 03 September 2013, 18:45 »
Evening all,

evo magazine have asked me to put together a buying guide to the mk6 GTI and, as you're the guys with the knowledge, I was wondering if any of you would like to contribute some thoughts. Very happy to publicise the website in return for any help that you can give me.

The first thing I need is a mk6 'guru' who can talk me through all the common issues so that we can tell potential buyers what to look out for.

We also have an 'I bought one' section, where an owner talks about their personal experiences with their own car - likes and dislikes, what's gone wrong, etc.

If anyone can help with either of the above, please email me at petertomalin@me.com

many thanks,

Peter

Water pump fails (water level in bottle keeps dropping to min)
Aircon pump fails
Cam chain tensioner failures = new engine (cars upto~ may 2010 worst effected)
Crankcase ventilation system leak ( looks like oil leaks from turbo)
Turbo high pressure line fracture causing oil mist leak results in turbo failure.
Diverter valve failures
Dsg mecatronic unit fails
Dual mass flywheel
Corrosion of monza shadow 18" wheels
Waste gate rod resonanates at around 2500 rpm dealer clip modification.
Suspension alighnment wide tolerances causing sawtooth tyre ware and lots of road noise.
Lots of interior rattle issues

When reading this, it does make you think why on earth do i keep buying GTIs, must be mad...

But a 20 min drive at night with no traffic on the road soon turns it all around.....loved blasting around tonight, didnt want to go home....

This is interesting. I get a vibration/rattle at approx. 2500 when accelerating with a bit of load, which clears by 3000. I was sure it was something to do with the exhaust though? Doesn't happen with gentle acceleration.

Sure does, it's just at those certain revs.

I had no joy with dealer recognising it as a recall fix so did it myself, clip was about £12 iirc.

I'm just not sure what I've got is the same as your issue? :undecided:

Can you provide photos/guide on what you did and where you sourced the clip?

It will be the wastegate rod mate, it was a very common problem on the mk6, i had the clip put on mine by the dealers which solved it, type wastegate in the search bar at the top and you'll see.
