Leased GTI More Than R
« on: 10 September 2019, 11:42 »
So my leased (PCH) GTI is coming to its 2 year end and I've been looking at picking up another. I've found quite a few deals, however they all seem to be more expensive than the Golf R.  I'm very tempted to just go with the R as the deals look really good.

Any ideas why the GTI would be more? Is it demand?

Maybe you just found a very cheap R deal?

If its just one, maybe its a fake price...

Basically with a lease you’re paying the depreciation so if a car has sting residuals it’ll be cheap on the monthlies.
This is where VW goofed with the mk7 R basing their projected retained value on the previous gen R so offered a load of cheap leases in 2014/5 which became so popular it conversely killed the residuals and image of the car. VW quickly realigned prices afterwards but compared to a GTI an R has often looked better value.

Another thing to consider is manufacturers will do promotions on certain models occasionally, be it because sales have dipped, excess stock or possibly even in retaliation to a rival marque to drum up business.
Leon Cupras have been outstanding value recently.

And as fredgroves said, maybe it was just bait.

Pretty much every deal I looked at (and I searched allot) the R was less a month. Well that was DSG. Manual GTIs were still cheaper.

It's normally just a case of if there is a deal on the R then that's the case that it will be cheaper. These deals come and go fairly quickly so if you are wanting one just go for it. I've seen them fairly cheap as well.

What's the best you are finding on an R? There are deals on manual 3 door GTI but nothing cheap on a 5 door.

A few months ago all the cheaper deals were on the gti. I found that as soon as you adjust the mileage a lot of the deals weren’t that great.

Sometimes your better taking it with lower mileage and paying the excess mileage charge if your not going to much over

If you can get a new R for £30990 (5dr, dsg, Prets, metallic, del miles), then would it make more sense to buy one? If that lease price includes servicing, tyres and tax then perhaps not. But you are essentially paying £12,328 to rent a car for 3 years. And I can't see any 16 plate R's with 24k on for less than £19/20k but they are all pre-facelift cars which are bound to be less.
