Wtf!
What the hell is wrong with people.
I really do hope they find them and throw the book at them.
That's potentially lethal!
-
My god! That's shocking! Hope you and any occupants are ok. Scary stuff.
-
You're ok and that's the main thing.
But I'd echo the other sentiments and hope the police use their full powers. Given what's going on at the moment it shows complete disrespect for you and our NHS.
-
Shocking. That must have been scary. Idiots like that need to lose their licence. In the past I have been injured by bad/dangerous drivers and have every sympathy for you. You’ll probably not feel the full (physical) affect until the adrenaline subsides. From my experience in previous collisions and the inept way they were (not) investigated, some things you might consider. Preserve your dash cam footage and back it up to another card or device if you have to part with it. Get your crime report number for your insurers. Incidentally, if you had a passenger and they give their account make sure they get a copy to give to you too. If safe, in daylight go back and see if there are any bits of the Pajero lying close to where it struck your car (badges or trim, lenses etc) I would also take your own photos of the damage to your car in daylight against a metre stick and look for any paint left on your car. Note the height from the ground where your car was damaged to allow comparison with damage on the vehicle that caused it if it is found. If the police do not take any visible paint samples, scrape your own off with a clean blade and put them in a clean envelope. This might be prudent and of help to your insurance claim, if they are interested. Might be worth uploading your footage on to Facebook, some decent local may recognise the culprit’s car. Do you have Gap insurance? Hope you are well. Best...
-
The main thing is that you’re ok. The car can be repaired. Now I say that but what on earth possesses someone to do that? It’s quite frankly unbelievable that someone thinks ‘he’s just overtaken. How dare he. I know, I’ll ram him!’ How does someone make that significant leap from being annoyed to ramming another car and putting everybody’s lives at risk? In all the years I’ve had performance Golfs I’ve never really had any major bother but when I had my S3, let’s just say the attitude of other road users was a factor in trading the car in.
-
That's truly shocking. Hope the police get them.
What type of road/speed did it happen on?

On an A road, dash cam says I was doing 50,couldn’t get out of the way as when he rammed me there were other vehicles in front, dont understand it....I didn’t cut him up or anything, infact when I went along side to pass he tried to ram me then too.
All booked in for repair......but I bet the parts don’t come quick.
-
Unbelieveable, but unfortunately totally believeable given the number of idiots encountered on the roads nearly every day. Glad you're okay, let's just hope the police deal with it as we would expect them to.
-
Unbelievable, hope you get it sorted asap
-
Do let us know what the cops say.... hope wherever you are they have more interest than here. Here they'd just tell you to make an insurance claim and not want to get involved....
-
Absolutely shocking. I hope no one was hurt.

Surely this is not just an accident, or dangerous driving, this is vehicular assault?! Using a car as a weapon is a serious crime, which could lead to serious injury or death. I would be surprised if the police do not want track down and prosecute this person. I would also be surprised if the person is not 'know' to the police.
If the police do nothing and they get away with this, this person will do it again.

Not heard back from them yet...but that’s no great surprise.
Car is being assessed on Friday so we shall see I guess, just glad I don’t need the nasty 1 litre courtesy car they are offering. My sister and he other half have quite a few cars and will lend me one of theirs....for some reason I can’t have there new g wagon or Range Rover 😂

I wish I knew what the police here WERE interested in.... actually, I suspect its writing something on Twitter or Facebook.
Dave phone them back and tell them you want to change your report to someone being nasty to you on social media. I expect ten cops will arrive in under 5 minutes.
-
Or just post about it on social media and @ all the newspapers you can think of, both local and national . :lipsrsealed:
-
Can’t believe I have read this, but main thing is you are ok Dave. How shocking.
The driver was probably under the influence of something or other, and chose to react to your overtaking manoeuvre with dangerous aggression.
-
When I started riding bikes, they told me
"Always think that every other driver is a crazy drug addict trying to kill you, and act consequently"
That's becoming true for cars too. Massive amount of people nowadays is driving impaired.
-
Hi again. Hope you are well. Depends on what you want to happen. I believe in this case, presumably of dangerous driving, police policy may require an investigation. I don’t want to seem negative about them. If you were injured I think they would investigate. However, as I said before, my experience is they will try to avoid it. That is why I suggested you looking for and keeping any evidence yourself as it may be your insurers will require it. Repairs or injury might make it an expensive claim.
-
hows your neck and back? basic whiplash claim pays out £5 -£9k
-
Still no word from the police at all
Daylight pics, have got the boot open.....it’s off to the repair shop on Tuesday.

Bloody hell! Looks worse in the light.
-
Do they still have to do an assessment to deem it repairable or not when it goes in?
That's some real nasty damage to the body..
-
About 5 years ago I had a slight knock to the rear bumper of a Mk 7 GTD which only cracked the bumper, it cost £1300 to have a new bumper fitted. I think that your repair may be shockingly expensive.
-
They have done an initial assessment, but they didn’t open the boot in case it would not shut again ,so said they’d add to the assessment once collected.
I opened the boot myself this afternoon....it did close again.
-
Might well be the first GTi in the UK to be written off
-
I know I shouldn't laugh Dave but that pic of the back of your car in the daylight reminds me of the Grumpy Cat
-

I'm sure some kids have already wrapped them around trees or poles trying to show off by now

In 1990, (I know, that’s a shockingly long time ago, for some) I bought a brand new Orion Ghia i. I had it 12 days and 1100 miles when it was stolen and crashed. It was debatable if it would be written off. I removed a tow bar, for a bike rack I had fitted and that was enough to increase the % cost of the damage, to have it written off. I was glad, I did not want it fixed and returned. What’s your thoughts? Might this happen?
-
I think it will be repaired, not really what I want as it may take a while to source parts etc.
If they tell me it’s written off .....I could get a new one in days.
-
Well a mate of mine was one of the first to get a UK Nissan GT-R when they came out, he drove it home from the dealer, which was about 4 miles, went on a dual carriageway, pulled out onto the fast lane didn't look properly and side swiped a van, hit front wheel, mirror and front wheel arch and was £5000 damage

Does your boot floor / spare wheel cover lift? Are the side panels or floor creased?
-
Boot floor lifts but is very tight....time will tell, trying not to overthink things as I will just get wound up over it.
-
There is no way on earth that's a write off.
-

Agree. For a car to be written off, it needs to be damaged beyond economic repair, which usually means cost of repairs would be in the region of 50% - 60% of the car’s value.
I’ve seen pictures of Golfs on some other VAG forums that’ve suffered rear end impacts. In those cases, if as a result of the impact there’s rippling of the roof panel or rear quarter panels, then that’s a good indication of more serious hidden structural damage, in which case there’s a good chance the car will be written off. Looking at the pictures posted by the OP, the damage seems to be limited to the tailgate, bumper cover, probably the metal bumper crossmember and possibly the panel behind the bumper, so I’d say a repair is the likely outcome. Just my opinion though, and I’m by no means qualified in these matters .
On a positive note, Moonstone Grey should be an easy colour to get a good colour match between the new paint on the replaced / repaired panels and the original factory paint.
-
I used to work for an insurance company (not actually on the claims side), but it was said how it does not take much to write off a modern day car.
The complexity of the safety systems, sensors, electronics etc are very expensive to replace in hardware terms plus the labour to install, re-calibrate and test etc.
It is almost like the main physical bodywork damage comes second in terms of cost to repair.
In this instance, I agree, it is highly unlikely this is write off territory, but what an unfortunate start to owning this new GTI, I cannot believe this was done intentionally too.
-
What was the outcome of this,? Did they catch him? Was/is it repaired?

Currently being repaired, police phoned me after a week and are investigating at the moment.
Repair bill is £6700 estimate

Nope ,I know there is going to be a prosecution of some sort, believe they were waiting for the cps to decide what....wether it’s making off from an accident,or using a vehicle as a weapon etc,I’m sure I will hear eventually.
-
I'm glad they are taking action and think they have evidence to proceed.
Hope your insurance company have the details they need to persue cost recovery.
The bad thing is that its going to impact you for 5 years minimum on insurance premiums. You could probably launch a small claims case to recover that from the perp too.
Although I'd probably put good money on a bet that they will be penniless and offering to pay a quid a month for 5 years.

You can have my GTi letters if you like - removed all the badging off mine, as I prefer the cleaner look

Yours gratis, they’ll only sit on the shelf. You’ll just need to get some sticky backed foam to reattach. Something like numberplate pads would probably be ideal. DM me your address and I’ll put them in the post

Looking nice and fresh, I am sure it's good to be back behind the wheel again.
-
You can buy purpose made tape to fix them back on. I bought some a while ago off eBay and haven't used it. I'll see if I can find it but I moved house two months ago and it might be in a storage unit. I'll have a look and let you know.

deleted, apologies, wrong thread

Really pleased to see that you've got the car back. It looks great.
Doesn't this thread also show what a great place this forum is. Members helping others out for no reason than being nice. Well played everyone!
