First post is the most factual. The rest, are opinion and speculation.

I owned a Toledo V5 (150) and sure it had problems, but nothing that the other mk4 engines (including the turbos) don't suffer from. I.E. coil packs etc.

I never had a problem with oil consumption, chains, pistons, or anything else. Like most engines, take care of them, and they will be fine. Power, well it was progressive, and torquey, but it's only 150BHP pulling along 1800KG of car, it's not going to be flighty, and they will be more suited to cruising than performance.

FYI: The reason the V5 and later the V6 engines were dumped is because:
A) Cost to manufacture
B) Weight
C) Space constraints
D) Emission laws tightening up

Neither were dumped because they were crap engines. If you are going to say something, make sure it's at least semi true.

I based my opinion on the 3 people I know that have had V5's, 2 suffered failed pistons and the chain can get noisy at 100k and it is major work to replace it.

A dealer told my friend that the V5 was dropped due to poor sales which I guess means more people went for the turbo.

sod it get what ever you want lol if you want a v5 over a r32 or a turbo etc then get one doesn't matter how much people love it or hate it you will always do what you want in the end.. the favourite engine on this site is the 1.8t where if you went on a v5 owners site they would say they 1.8t is sh!te and the v5 is the way forward.. it doesn't matter if it was dropped for sales or any other reason.. the 1.8t is still being produced to this day in variants so it does show its a good engine and parts are cheap and widely available..

My mate bought one of these, 15 to the gallon if you lucky, get a diesel mate, 150 gt tdi faster at 150bhp than the v5 and even faster if you chip it :-)  Livin testament :-)

I hope it was cheap with 142k on it.
