Golf GTI Mark4 1.8T intercoolers
« on: 08 May 2017, 20:51 »
Hi guys I need some advice on what the benefits or downfalls of getting bigger Inter cooler piping, maybe 2.5 or 3inch? Is it worth it?. It's running off standard engine at the moment, had another turbo added recently ( not a brand new one), and is boosting up a lot better now. Thanks for anyone that can help.

3inch is too big. 2.5 keeos it same size as throttle body. Slight increase in performance because of the colder air.
But not noticeable without further upgrades.

Any mods I would assume, but mainly the breathing works (Intake & exhaust) as it will help cool the whole flow of air in & out

Bigger injectors arnt needed for a stage 2 map.
If your going down that route it depends on what size turbo you want. And your running into engine needing uprated internals.

2.5 inch pipework will work amd work well. Just uprated the pipework to silicone will help as the rubber softens over time. Theres plenty of info on tuning a 1.8t to read through

Generally for a stage 2 you can get away without having to mod the internals but a FMIC and turbo back exhaust with decat/sports cat are your main two (i. e. expensive) required mods. Other than that it's generally good practice to have all your vacuum hoses sorted and confirmed leak free plus an uprated DV, updated boost hoses, induction kit, catch can, and possibly actuator. I've gotten away without the actuator but did everything else first. Technically you don't *need* all of the above but it will help with reliability once you're pushing higher boost levels.

I think if you're on a K03 turbo as opposed to a K03s you need to swap the turbo too but don't quote me on this bit as I've always had a K03s equipped engine but it makes for a 20bhp difference at Stage 1 IIRC so would image it's also very apparent and limiting for a stage 2.

Ko3s is a better investment but not a necessity.
