Title: Engine Oil Pressure low STOP ENGINE warning on dash engine stopped
Post by: monkey0617 on 13 April 2012, 18:36
Hi friends.

Ive got a 2002 Golf MK4 1.8T 20v, I was driving along and the dash BEEPED and flashed up "Low oil pressure STOP ENGINE" within 2 secs the engine just cut out! The oil was low. I topped it up and it just wouldnt start! I called out the breakdown and because it was the Easter weekend I had no where to take it! He was as much use as tits on a fish! So I was towed back to my place and I just left it there for 24hrs! Next day I tried again but just wouldnt start! It turns and trys to start but just wont! I got it towed to a local garage On Tues afternoon. The guy started working on it Wednesday, first buy plugging in his (Snapon Diagnostic machine) Its not picking up anything! No faults nothing! Next day his mate brought his diagnostic machine to have ago but NOTHING still! So I booked it in to a VAG specialist (Its a Skoda garage which is nearest to me in Winchester) and was told it will cost nearly £190 just to have tests done to find a fault!! After scanning the internet and phoning up VW in Poole Dorset the guy on the phone said it could be the Oil pump thats gone so its starving the turbo of oil hence the engine shut down to prevent further damage to the engine but they will need to have the car to just be sure! So I took the option to cancel the specialist and just told the guy at the garage to fit a new oil pump! Well guess what....... Yep still NO GO!! Been scanning the internet again and some guys are saying that they have had that and it was nothing to do with oil pump but a speed censor!!! my other half has managed to borrow a VAG diagnostic software of her mate which we will be trying tomorrow! Im just hoping that this WILL reset, pick up any faults and or show me the way to get my pocket rocket back on the roads!!

When I go to try and start it does not beep or flash up "Low oil pressure STOP ENGINE" anymore its just got the yellow triangle with an arrow going right to left around it which flashes then stays on! also noticed that my left rear light bulb is not working but not sure if the brake light does still?

Please does ANYBODY what the hell is wrong or had anything like this happen to them!?

Cheers
Steve

Sounds to me like its an engine management fault? Obviously it wont flash up the low oil any more because the low oil sensor is the thickest sensor in the whole car, and will only tell you when its low, not if their is a fault!

Short of that, may be a possibility of the turbo to have blown? friend had the same problem on his leon when he took a chunk out of his sump, and his oil drained very quickly, blowing his turbo but locking it so there was no air getting to the engine. just a possibility?

Whats Andywash? There was NO noise, smoke or anything when it did all that it just came up on the dash then died! I thought that when a turbo goes the car will still run but has hardly any power also it puts out loads of smoke!?

Did they fit a new oil pick up pipe at the same time as the pump, sounds like to me you have oil pressure issues.

prety much the same as what happened to me and engine wouldnt turn over because it was seized due to the oil pick up pipe being blocked and starved the engine of oil so got a new engine

Doubt if a new oil pick up pipe was changed when he changed the oil pump! The engine turns over trys to fire up but just doesnt start! Hopefully with this VAG software getting used today it will pick up what the fooks wrong with it!

I would get your oil pressure checked asap before doing anything else.

The pump should come with an oil pipe (everyone I looked at did) and if not they should of cleaned it out (it's not hard to do)

but I think your engine started to seize as the oil light came on!! (they hate being run with low oil!!)
