Title: Dom's MK5 Gti - New Wheels
Post by: dom on 04 July 2014, 10:22
Right then, just put a deposit down on a replacement for the MK4, spec is as follows:

2005 VW Golf GTi MK5 3 door in Tornado Red
•   63k Miles and only 1 Previous owner
•   Factory fitted Xenons
•   Full Service Incl. Cambelt and water pump @ 59,000 miles
•   Full VW service history apart from the last one which was done by an independent
•   Loads of other work including a gearbox rebuild and new clutch under warranty by VW 18 months ago
•   Latest revision D/V, cam follower and temp sensors/thermostats replaced.

The modifications are:
•   Bluefin Stage 1 with handset
•   Complete R32 Brake set up (Front and Rear)
•   Cat back non res Miltek Exhaust
•   Pre cat removed
•   MK6 Golf R Multi function steering wheel with working controls
•   MK6 Golf Gear knob and Gaiter
•   Bumpers and Skirts Professionally colour coded
•   BSH Catch Can
•   MK6 'slow close' Tailgate handle
•   Armrest
•   R32 rear lights
•   Black grill badge
•   Powerflex Dog mount Bush

I'm taking a bit of a gamble as I've stuck the deposit down without seeing the car. I'm collecting it Sunday so fingers crossed it's as good as it looks.

First change will be the wheels, Matt @ OCD is currently pricing me up air again as well - this might have to wait a little while though.

Looks nice, good move with changing the wheels they do nothing for the car.

Hopefully selling all the Mk4 parts and the Mk4 can pay/fund for this project. I am starting to get a soft spot for the MK5 so you better make this one my favourite.

Have you had a Mk1 or Mk2? (I recall a Mk2 but I think that was a family members?) you seem to be going through the Mks...

Yup, as soon as some cash is freed up from the MK4 wheels will be sorted.

My dad had a mint type 19 MK2, I've had a couple of MK3s and the MK4

Picked it up earlier, absolutely over the moon with it

The 240 mile drive back from Portsmouth was a good way to give it a good test, the R32 brakes are awesome! I almost went through the windscreen the first time I used them

(http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy183/codling1234/IMG_20140706_192115_zpskwyxhmkl.jpg) (http://s790.photobucket.com/user/codling1234/media/IMG_20140706_192115_zpskwyxhmkl.jpg.html)

Got it home and squeezed it onto the drive, the neighbours must think we're mad! My girlfriend has just bought a new car so she has 2 on the drive already, now I have 2 as well

(http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy183/codling1234/IMG_20140706_191522_zpsehkn3mwg.jpg) (http://s790.photobucket.com/user/codling1234/media/IMG_20140706_191522_zpsehkn3mwg.jpg.html)

Just about squeezed it on though:

(http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy183/codling1234/IMG_20140706_205638_zpsgvd5jhek.jpg) (http://s790.photobucket.com/user/codling1234/media/IMG_20140706_205638_zpsgvd5jhek.jpg.html)

I gave it a quick scan for fault codes and it threw three up, one for the interior lights (the fuse has gone), one for the sunlight sensor on the dash and one for the alarm horn. I haven't set the alarm off to see if the horn sounds but I suspect the horn needs to be replaced. As for the sunlight sensors....not too sure what to do!

Anyway, I set the indicators as DRLs with Vagcom:

And I love xenons!

Honestly doesn't need it! Previous owner machine polished it few weeks ago and gave it a clean yesterday so it's nice and shiny!

I love red cars. I've seen a nice BMW in a garage in Birmingham. It definitely won't be around for long but I don't fancy the 80 mile drive, plus am at work all week. And to top it all off, the DVLA haven't returned my V5 yet

I've ordered the wire I need to sort out the cruise control, can you get to the steering control module without removing the steering wheel?

The family wagon is a pretty good base anyway as far as cars like that go!

Adam offered to take a look but couldn't see it until tonight, I'm pretty sure it would have sold by now if I didn't stick a deposit down on it!

Did a couple of other bits on this earlier, the alarm horn doesn't work so I need to get another one ordered.

When the Mk6 steering wheel was fitted Lee fitted a cruise control stalk at the same time but forgot to fit the ECU wire so I've got one on ordered and took the trim off ready to fit and then code it:

I also took one of the tailpipes off to clean, refitted it so it sticks out a little less:

The MK5 is looking a bit scared of the ground next to the MK4

Got the exhaust sitting how I want it, I'm debating getting some GT100 tips to replace the current ones. I have them on the MK4 and prefer the look of them.

(http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy183/codling1234/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1795_zpsu2myutbx.jpg) (http://s790.photobucket.com/user/codling1234/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1795_zpsu2myutbx.jpg.html)

I also fitted the diagnostics wire from the steering wheel module to the ecu and coded in the cruise control

Not masses to report, just bought one of these for it:

Also fitted LEDs to all the interior lights, I'm waiting on number plate ones to arrive as well.

Red 3 door is a good choice.

It is indeed! I've had a browse of your topic on MK5golfgti, nice car you've got :afro:

Not really got anything much to update this with at the moment, slowly shifting the MK4 parts. Need to get the car itself sold and assess finances before deciding what to do next with this one.

Whilst checking tyre pressures earlier I noticed this....

(http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy183/codling1234/DSC_2100_zpsioax8ctz.jpg) (http://s790.photobucket.com/user/codling1234/media/DSC_2100_zpsioax8ctz.jpg.html)

The dreaded Mk5 rust

I'm going to pop into a dealers tomorrow and start a warranty claim, not holding out too much hope for it but it's worth a shot. Otherwise I'll have to bite the bullet and pay for it to be done myself.

My only concern is that the previous owner had the bumper repainted and the wings were blended in. I reckon they'll refuse the warranty claim on the basis that it's had paint.

Yeah they're 18's, no idea on width or offset though. I'm gonna have them off in the next couple of weeks to paint my calipers so I'll check full specs then.

Warranty claim on the wings was rejected due to them having paint in the past, bonnet has also had paint and possibly filler due to high reading.

I've sourced replacement wings for £30 each from a mate who works in a body panel centre, non-gen but insurance approved so fitment should be fine. Getting quotes for paint at the moment, hopefully get it sorted within a couple of weeks.

Why get replacement wings, you have 2?

Because the standard ones are rusty, there's no point trying to repair them because it'll always end up coming back, it will also save on labour costs.

Wow - not been on here in a while :embarrassed:

This is mainly due to not doing anything to the Mk5 at all, here's a summary of what's happened over the last 12 months(ish).

Fitted cherry hazard switch and Gti seat handle inserts:

30mm H&R springs:

Which came off my brothers ED30:

Fitted some wind deflectors which you can almost see here:

Gloss black rear badge:

(http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy183/codling1234/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsxlz2xpcm.jpg) (http://s790.photobucket.com/user/codling1234/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsxlz2xpcm.jpg.html)

I spent ages test fitting wings to replace the rusty ones with, in the end I got them both done by VW under warranty.

While it was there I got a few other bits done including an R32 bumper:

(http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy183/codling1234/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpspq9wqlod.jpg) (http://s790.photobucket.com/user/codling1234/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpspq9wqlod.jpg.html)

Which means it currently sits like this:

(http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy183/codling1234/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsqgrtupjz.jpg) (http://s790.photobucket.com/user/codling1234/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsqgrtupjz.jpg.html)

I've got a wiper blank on its way from Dan (xtetx), Matt at Only Charged Dubs has got hold of a set of BC Racing coilovers for me which he's using to fabricate some brackets to convert them to air ride at a later date. When he's done with them I'll get them fitted - for those who haven't heard of BC, they're quality coilovers, fully adjustable and come with camber top mounts etc.

I'll sort some wheels as well, probably some more BBS CHs, or possibly BBS VZs.

Cheers bud. You've already seen it so will know what this next update will be

Gotta admit I do like the R32 rear on the Mk5, not so keen on the front though

I really don't like the R32 front end, mine has changed a little as you'll see now.

Update time!

I gave the engine bay a quick once over:

My brother was having some issues with his Ed30 last week so I popped over to take a look:

It ended up being a faulty PCV valve so temporarily I gave him mine and refitted by BSH revamp kit:

I had some tint film lying around so decided to do the fogs:

I've been having issues with my tail light bulbs, they appear to be way too bright and look like this:

oes anyone have an recommendations for replacement bulbs?

I deleted the rear wiper the other day thanks to a quality kit from Dan aka Kill All Wipers:

I popped into Only Charged Dubs for a service on Tuesday afternoon:

While I was there I decided that a set of coilovers was needed. Matt happened to have a set of BC Racing coilovers on the shelf, they were specced as 'extra low' when ordered so have the potential for a massive drop should I want it.

I arranged to go back on Friday to get them fitted. When I arrived Joe was finishing building them up:

We decided to set a small amount of negative camber (as yet unknown exactly how much - I'll go for alignment this week).

With the wheels off I gave the rear arches a check over and found two small areas of rust bubbling on the seam. I sanded it back to clean metal and treated it with a 'rust converter' to try and stop the spread. I'm going to tiger seal over the top to try and seal it all in.

Joe got cracking at removed the old suspension:

The car gave up a bit of a fight, one of the ball joint bolts snapped and then the driveshaft popped out inside the outer CV boot. They were all sorted pretty easily though.

We wound the coilovers all the way down to see what it would look like:

It was sat on the tyres and wouldn't get off the ramp

I set a provisional ride height and headed home happy!

Sat morning I popped round to a mate's garage to get the brakes skimmed:

Like new:

I got the car home and cleaned it up ready for FittedUK on Sunday:

The eagled eyed amongst you will have also spotted a smooth grill and I ditched the yellow tint on the fogs.

This week I need 2 new tyres and full alignment, then I'll be skint for a while

Simple, effective modifications and they work so well. I'd be interested in knowing how the BC Racing coilovers are mate, seems to be a growing amount of them filtering their way onto the market.

Time for another long overdue update!

I needed 2 tyres and was getting a lot of scrubbing so ordered 2x215/35/18 Goodyear Eagle F1s, fitted them and ESP was having a fit due to mismatching tyres front/rear. I ordered a pair of 215/35/18 Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas and got them fitted. A bit of playing with VCDS and the speedo was reading correctly again.

Literally 2 weeks later I went to collect a new car for the other half and spotted this:

Yup, in a 2 week old tyre! Tried to repair it but the patch wouldn't seal:

Another tyre ordered

Picture of it with a new car for the other half:

Fitted some nice chrome tipped switches:

Hit a massive section of road that had sunk causing this:

Luckily the sump didn't crack, a new CV boot was all that was needed.

Took it to Only Charged Dubs so Matt could chop my car up :undecided:

Also needed a new battery and had to have the rear arm bushes chopped out when the alignment was done, decided to have Powerflex bushes fitted. Haven't got any pictures of those though.

It's been a bitter-sweet few weeks with the car. I changed the cam follower a couple of weeks ago, it's done about 30k miles since it was last done so thought it was about time:

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/Mobile%20Uploads/15077FA9-12B1-4164-B069-2F8DD9ACACE3_zpsmoj5ywzl.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/15077FA9-12B1-4164-B069-2F8DD9ACACE3_zpsmoj5ywzl.jpg.html)

Annoying I snapped one of the PCV pipes, it was incredibly brittle. I've bodged it back together temporarily, I have another ready to go on when I find time.

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/Mobile%20Uploads/45D08673-BD59-42D2-955B-7131CCE71AB6_zpsoohuhalo.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/45D08673-BD59-42D2-955B-7131CCE71AB6_zpsoohuhalo.jpg.html)

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/Mobile%20Uploads/BC8137C2-5BAB-44B5-920B-F12354738D8C_zps3yw5j2wf.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/BC8137C2-5BAB-44B5-920B-F12354738D8C_zps3yw5j2wf.jpg.html)

I gave it a long overdue clean!

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/Mobile%20Uploads/CA31796D-4841-4E09-B7F7-69842165FED1_zpsjqvcywqz.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/CA31796D-4841-4E09-B7F7-69842165FED1_zpsjqvcywqz.jpg.html)

Then drove up to the lake district where I have bought a new house which has not only a garage but a decent length drive:

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/Mobile%20Uploads/F5DBFEEE-2054-4259-8149-2C118DCFB8A7_zpsyq3cam4s.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/F5DBFEEE-2054-4259-8149-2C118DCFB8A7_zpsyq3cam4s.jpg.html)

Then to bring my back down to reality with a bump I hit a brick whilst doing about 60mph on an a-road, it was in the middle of my lane and it was dark so unfortunately I couldn't do anything to avoid it. I got the car back to where I'm staying, but overnight it decided to have a wee all over my parent's drive...safe to say my dad wasn't too happy!

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/Mobile%20Uploads/CFEB79AF-A36C-4E78-8C6C-9F0BCA1EFBEE_zpsb2gnr0po.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/CFEB79AF-A36C-4E78-8C6C-9F0BCA1EFBEE_zpsb2gnr0po.jpg.html)

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/Mobile%20Uploads/88B2F8FE-FDE6-4826-8FA7-E05E56DC6793_zpsqdcshcbg.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/88B2F8FE-FDE6-4826-8FA7-E05E56DC6793_zpsqdcshcbg.jpg.html)

Got it recovered to a local garage where they were supposed to swap the sump this morning, annoyingly the sump they had ordered didn't have a hole for the oil return pipe. After a couple of hours of desperately trying to get hold of a new sump today/tomorrow the decision was made to use chemical metal as a temporary fix until Monday when it will be changed.

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/Mobile%20Uploads/346A23C6-193E-486A-BD67-4D3DF4BB89C0_zpshpgthz8k.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/346A23C6-193E-486A-BD67-4D3DF4BB89C0_zpshpgthz8k.jpg.html)

I decided to measure the ground clearance....I think it's time I raised it a bit!

Finally I fitted a newsouth boost gauge that I had from when I had my MK4, it isn't wired in yet because I ran out of time, hopefully will do that at the weekend.

Yeah, I did about 30 miles without realising it had smashed

Found some more rust...

Bit of a mammoth update...

I've had some droning and vibration through the car at motorway speeds for a while, I was pretty sure that it was down to the tyres wearing unevenly but wanted to try some other wheels to make sure. My brother has an ED30 and some winter wheels so I decided to try his R32 winters on...

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/DSC_0100_zpsklkh5wdc.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/DSC_0100_zpsklkh5wdc.jpg.html)

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/DSC_0101_zpspdcnyhwp.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/DSC_0101_zpspdcnyhwp.jpg.html)

Went for a drive, still had vibration and a lot of noise. I put this down to the balancing of the wheels and the fact they are winter tyres in 20 degree heat.

Next was swapping his ED30 wheels on to mine:

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/DSC_0107_zpsvcsph0wk.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/DSC_0107_zpsvcsph0wk.jpg.html)

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah107/dallgood1/DSC_0105_zpsd8zfurvt.jpg~original) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/DSC_0105_zpsd8zfurvt.jpg.html)

I love the darker colour of them so will get my CH's refurbed darker sometime. Anyway, no more noise or vibration which confirms the problem is wheel/tyre related, I had the wheels on a balancer a couple of weeks ago and they looked straight which means it must be the tyres.

Part 2 coming in a sec...

On to today then, this morning I decided that I would spend the day giving it a detail.

I started with a wash and then clay, following that I gave it a machine polish using a couple of different compounds of Menzerna polish on a couple of different pads. The whole car was waxed with Collinite 476s, glass cleaned with Autoglym glass polish, exhaust with Autosol and trims were treated with Aerospace 303.

After the initial wash:

Here you can see some swirling/defects in the paint:

After claying:

Again you can see defects in the paint in direct sunlight:

Most of the front grills were removed for cleaning:

Peek-a-boo:

After the first pass:

I also tackled the headlights which were covered in white spots when the lights are on. Much better now:

Had the same wheels and R32 rear on my mk5 GTI for a time, this makes me miss it quite a bit. But I don't regret getting the 6R so it's a mixed bag of emotions reading this thread. Get that rust sorted and she'll be a show stopper, plus good condition ones that have been sorted are holding value much better at the moment, so it's also a sensible move to address the body work (in case you need to justify the spend to someone!).

Your 6R is awesome, I much prefer the 6R over the 7R. I would love to get one myself but I'm moving house in a couple of months, first child is due in November and I'm getting married next summer so I can't justify it

I will definitely sort the rust though, I can't stand knowing that it is there

How are you keeping? I've not been around for a while either! The Mk5 went in January 2017, a 60 mile commute and a baby meant that it had to go.

This was the replacement:

But that is now up for sale as I've changed jobs again and live 4 miles from work, just stuck a deposit down on this:
