Title: antogoof`s 1991 mk2 8v
Post by: antogoof on 19 May 2009, 18:49
(http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll171/antogoof/pics19509155.jpg)

i really hope this works!

my new car, 1991 8v gti.

i bought it from traff22 off here, but it was in hampshire 239 miles away from me!

as it stood on friday when i bought it:

mot till oct this year and taxed till july, lowered 40mm on shocks and supersport springs, single light grill. clear headlights, fogs and indicators, 16v rear lights. it has had a respray and there are only a tiny few imperfections in the paint. door armour plates. 15" bbs ra wheels with toyo proxes tyres. full stainless steel system including manifold twin 3" backbox.

now for the good bit........

well tbh i have not got a clue the guy i bought it off said he had bought the engine complete, so i did a bit of research on it and found he had bought it off a member on southern dubs, traced that back through the old threads and basically had a pop at it, im glad i did!

a few things wrong with it on first look, needs 2 bottom arms, the exhaust was in need of new rubbers, some trim needed putting back on, numberplates were on the piss, the seats dont match the doorcards (not really a problem, but it gets on my nerves) needs a tyre and prob new discs and pads. oh and the armour plates need a rub and a spray.

had a good look under it last night and there is very little wrong with it, going to give it a good clean and waxoil it at the weekend. fixed the exhaust with new rubbers and its spot on, the passenger side sill cover was hanging off at the front and it had had screws put through it  so i sorted that out door trims were missing some fixings i have now put this right, the leather gaitor was beyond repair so i got a rubber one off a cl in the scrappers, the gearnob was missing its top cap so that was changed for a mint one.

got it valeted, only cost me a tenner and its the best job i have ever seen!

I think its the seats that have been changed, those door cards match those in my 91 8v three door. The rainbow seats were from earlier 16 valve models.

A cassette tape will do, always worked for me.

Your engine's a pretty similar spec to mine although with a few more cc. Fun ain't they!

Do you know the user of Southern Dubbers the engine came from? I know most of the folks on there.

i think it was a member called benj? on there. i would like to find more out about it if poss....

im going to have to go to a charity shop for a tape!!!!

i only figured out where the engine came from after noticing that in the advert for the car there was a spelling mistake, (-Kobelschmit forged pistons) is spelled wrong.

copy and paste into google and it brings up an old build thread..............try it.

drivers side front, really worn disc, this had to go but i had a problem, when i took the caliper off the pads were not too bad but i had replacements anyway.

had to drill the screw out as it would not turn and i dont have an impact driver.

stuck the hew disc on and the pads, then i tried to push the piston back.....

no chance it went back a bit enough to get the old pads back on but with the new disce it was a mile off.

so thats how it ended up on the drivers side front, i had the other 3 to do yet. not happy.

went to the other side and tried to get the caliper off, the bottom allen key was spot on.

the top one was an abortion, it was rounded and i had no way of getting it out so i tried this:

with this:

and ended up with this:

then i tried turning it and it just snapped off so i tried an allen key:

that bent as soon as i got some leverage on it and then snapped off again.

so i was stuck and i left it, stuck the wheel back on and gave up.

i did a few other bits, the seat needed a new plastic runner and the paacel shelf needed fixing, but im worried about that bolt.

i am going to refurb the calipers as well as some of the rubbers are shot and i dont need the brakes to fail!

i need some help with finding out where i would get a set of seals for the calipers and any advice on that bolt is very welcomed.

Title: Re: antogoof`s 1991 mk2 8v
Post by: antogoof on 26 May 2009, 20:11
well got em done, managed to somehow get the discs and pads off by just finding enough leway with the bottom bolt of the caliper out, then because the seals were shot the caliper slid straight off the top bolt while still leaving the slider on the bolt.

overall it was a b!tch but then got some heat on the bolt and it came out no prob with a vice grip.

had to take the drivers side caliper apart and tidy the piston up with emery paper and scotchbrite and them put it back together with the OLD seals, but i had to replace them discs and pads they were really sh!t.

other than that not much else has happened apart from i washed it and the wheels have come up minty mint!

will get some pics up soon got a stereo, some speakers and some bottom arms coming from fleabay, but my missus has warned me to stop spending money now or she is going to kill me.............................so im getting more goodies on friday he he!

not much to say really, im just amassing parts now to do everything at once.

bit i have bought:

16v brakes.

16v hubs.

new wheel bearings all round.

bottom arms.

new ball joints.

polybush kit.

and because of all this work i have to do on it i have bought an impact wrench and some sockets, soon i am going to buy a compressor off a mate.

i have a bit of a dilemma though, i am thinking about putting coilovers on it, but i have heard to ride will be too harsh with the car polybushed as well.

only problem i have is the car is too low for me, i keep catching the front wheel on the wing when turning and i cannot have people in the back plus speedhumps and so on.

its the only thing i dont like about the car, it really pisses me off at times so i am going to have to change it.

apart from coilovers what other options do i have? i think the cars look daft with standard suspension on, but i would like to lover it maybe 20-40 mm. at the mo its -60mm.

these were in top nick all the pistons moved freely, but then i noticed corroded brakelines so i changed them as well:

bled the brakes up when it was all done and its spot on and i also changed the master cyl for a 22mm one. sorted.

i mentioned on here before i thought something was wrong with the back of it, it leaned to one side and i thought the axle was bent.

with a bit of kitchen sink engineering we found out it was and the hunt started for a new one:

other stuff i did but did not get the picces for,

took the front bumper off cause it was a skew found the subframe was bent so fixed that and now its sweet.

the rear leccy windows did not work, so i junked the mechs for manual ones, sorted.

cambelt done, g60 top mounts done, poly rear top mounts done.

2 new boots this morning and the tracking done.

it drives like a different car, it really does.

passed the mot with flying colours today, im well pleased.

only thing left to do in the morning is take it out for a good run.

it needs new window seals on the back doors, and actual door seals, also the rubber seals which go over the top of the doors, and the sunroof still rattles (the f**k*r) will get it all done eventually!!!!

is been a hard old month! not worked for 4 weeks cause of xmas/snow.

being bored has got me thinking

couple of weeks ago when the snow was deep, i ripped the nearside arch trim off the car, it needed refitting anyway i just had not got round to it.

now im thinking about taking the arch and sill trims off but im gonna leave the door strips on.

i have seen a 3 door with it and it still looks good but im not sure.

opinions please!

looks great mate, and some good skills on sorting the rear axle out :afro: with regard to removing the trim on the arches are you going to extent them or leave as is? imo and what im going to be doing with mine is extending them as i reckon they look schweeet! but just my opinion of course
Title: Re: antogoof`s 1991 mk2 8v
Post by: antogoof on 17 January 2010, 17:13
no i changed my mind, im keeping the arches on, i just had thought it might look good without them but i love the look of the car so why change it.

i need some new suspension as the front offside shock is leaking so im saving up for some spax, plus its too low and its pissing me off cause it catches everything.

the shocks ar -60mm at the mo but im going for -40 mm next.

not updated in a while! been busy going self employed at work. had to use the golf this week for work,40 ish mile round trip a day.

a silght knocking devloped on tuesday from the front drivers side, this is not what i need at the mo as i am trying to save for a holiday! the car has started to sit a bit lopsided and had a look underneath and the offside drivers front suspension leg is fubar`d oil everywhere!

dunno what to buy for it but it has to be higher than it is now i keep nearly leaving the exhaust behind on speedbumps, i dont know if its just me but it gets really annoying to have to drive a fast road car carefully incase you lose bits off it.

bought two new roof gutters for it as the old ones were kaput, perished with big holes in them.

two new rear door seals as the old ones were leaking, i also put a complete new stereo system in about 2 months ago, kenwood head unit and amp, jensen bass cannon, new door and rear speakers and all the wiring, i got it all for free and got it fitted free as well! sweet.

watching a load of shocks on fleabay so i will update soon...................

car insurance time though, been quoted £1185 by lancaster classic car! so went shopping and just paid £165 for the year with a 5000 mile limit. sweet is all i can say i thought i might be paying around 300 not half that! it still needs bits though and i am thinking of more standard parts tbh. billies with standard springs and a standard exhaust.

the roads are horrid round here and the banging and crashing is not doing the car any favours, i want to be able to drive it not sit looking at it saying "its cool cause its low"

and the exhaust is fooked but im not sure which way to go with that yet.

still having fun driving it though on the b roads its sweet.

got a quote off longlife exhausts in stockport, for a stainless downpipe and mid section they want £200 notes  so thet can get to f**k.

need some standard 16v springs cheap if anyone has any going, the front and rear shocks are on the way from ebay and i want to put them on as soon as i get them as the front offside is totally fooked now and i have no confidence driving the car, i dont wanna end up in a hedge!

my mate in my local garage had it up on the ramps on sat and he says he will have a pop at the exhaust but i will have to see.

boge turbo gas front shocks for the front.

bilstien gas shocks for the rear.

eibach -40mm springs.

after doing some research it looks as though this would be the best set up for my mk2. so its all waiting for me in the boot!

tomorrow if it dunt rain im gonna stick the lot on the car, will update with pics soon.

so im kinda glad i did not sell this.

took the drivers side sill cover off this week to fix the hole in the sill................wooah lots of rust!

from about 6 inches from ther front edge of the front door i put my fingers right through the sill and then carried on putting my fingers through it till i got to the rear arch and that went as well about a third of the way up the car. most of the jacking point is gone as well.

i will get some piccies up as soon as i can look at it again but im not giving up, i have the repair panels on order but am also on the look out for a clean 3 door shell.

a bit gutted but i will just get a shell and put all the good bits on it.

only pic i have at the mo, it had been left in a garage for 2 years, but only had an indicated 54k.

looks like quite an honest car paint needs attention in places, small amount of rust on the rear panel underneath the bumper, bits and bats but not too bad, and it needs a a small patch on the drivers side sill. floors and the bulkhead are spotless.

standard cl trim, just taking the seats and the steering wheel out of mine.

engine is kaput when i started it it sounded like bottom end has had it, but its going in the skip anyway.

the wheels are oz saturns but they are going! suppose they dont look too bad but not my thing!

more updates soon.

we had to replace a few brakelines and bits but it actually went in easy! apart from 1 bolt on the subframe which we had to get an m12 tap for it was sweet.

loom was ok as well hardly any differences with it it went straight in. (not tried to start it yet though)!

things to do tomorrow:

clocks

exhaust

coolant (whenever)

strip the gti and get it ready for the scrappers

bleed brakes

oil

steering collom needs connecting

oh and i have to take the gti badge off!

so its a busy day for me!

more updates soon!

Post by: antogoof on 06 March 2011, 19:56
i took most of the above today.

its running really well except its letting water in somewhere!

bit of rust on the rear of the drivers rear window and i thought it was that, then today i cleaned it inside and when i opened the sunroof i found the little wind deflector flap has some fresh rust on it so it looks like its the sunroof seal i think. seeing as how the car had been sat in a garage for 4 years before i got it i should have expected it really. its just a matter of finding one now!

took the soundproofing up off the drivers and passenger floors and gave them a good clean no sign of any rust on the floors.

still not got the vdos working but they look cool anyway!

bought some mk3 seats for it when i got it for the bargain price of £21 off fleabay and the foam off them fit straight on to the mk2 cl bases it took me an hour to get them done. mint.

then i had the issue of the doorcards dint match the seats, i mean not even nearly! so ebay again for some edition 1 (expensive) doorcards which will suit the seats well as soon as i get chance to fit them.

when i first took it out i gave it a bit of a kicking and when i got back i found id blown a hole in the front valence! it was pretty rusty when we were working on the car and it was said a new one was needed but it could wait. it can wait no more! another ebay parcel on its way.

when i bought the new panel i also went for a mk1 duckbill, seen it done before but i dont know where to start, but iv no time anyway haha!!

might go for a respray in the future and im thinking about getting rid of the grill stripe? opinions?

no interior pics at the mo cause i only hoovered it out today and it was manky before. i will do it when i get the doorcards in.

took it to the carbon chip rr day yesterday and with a blowing sh!t exhaust and timing a mile out it still made 117 bhp and 147/148 torques!

had a standard zorst in the shed for months so as soon as i can be arsed it will go on, then im gonna take it back to the doc to see if it need a vr6 conversion or not!

got the standard zorst out the shed today, got under the car and theres no chance in hell it was gonna fit cause ive got a stainless manifold and custom downpipe.

luckily i found where the noise/leak/lack of grunt was coming from, the gasket connecting the manifold and the downpipe was pissing out, took it apart and cleaned all the old sealent off, sealed it up again and its mint!

so its still got a stickey out backbox but i like it so f**k it.

and until i put my foot down its the only clue you have to its sleeper nature!
Title: Re: antogoof`s 1991 mk2 8v
Post by: antogoof on 23 October 2011, 21:25
right so not been on for a while, golf is still mint and running well up until about 4 weeks ago when the downpipe cracked! so we made another one and it was sorted.

2 weeks later the backbox tried to fall off and take the rear mount with it so i got another rear box with shorter tailpipes and made new brackets and bolted that to the car. sorted.

took it for a drive and realised the basterd is twice a loud as the other one! doh!

so saturday i decided to soundproof it, now im fooked if im spending a million quid on dynamat so i had a look at cheap alternatives.........roofers flashing tape, bought 3 x 225mm by 10meter rolls from screwfix and set to work, pics next week when its all done.

i also got giddy about undersealing it for t`winter so i got the floor steam cleaned sat morning and there was no rust at all so i was well happy. lets it dry and got the underseal out. what a dirty job, but well worth the effort.

ill get pics up next week.

car ran really well, the week before i changed the oil and coolant and the highest temp i saw was 104 on the mfa. the only thing i would say is the suspension is too soft for a track.

anyway me and my brother are hooked! hes got a white mk2 8v which we are gonna strip, stick some coilovers on it and away we go.

its my old car! so even tho it had been chavved up i had to have it back, and i cost me a lot more than i sold it for!

this was in september 2012, so my brother had the dark blue one which he blew the gearbox up on and now its an abf!

the g 60 was an animal when i first had it but there were things i did not like

this had to go, i much prefer the 4 round lights and i sold this to a guy in mexico for a massive amount of money for what it is.

these had to go, i dont like leather to begin with but these did not work for me in a mk2. got some cheapies for £10.50.

(http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll171/antogoof/BAD5ADA6-31FE-49B3-8A6D-B31B4CF9265F-6943-00000A667A5EAB6A.jpg) (http://s288.photobucket.com/user/antogoof/media/BAD5ADA6-31FE-49B3-8A6D-B31B4CF9265F-6943-00000A667A5EAB6A.jpg.html)

and these wheels! good sizes for the car but the style and condition was horrible! replaced for sebrings.

so after discussions with my vr6 weilding friend we did a deal and:

however there was still a list of things i wanted to change or improve on the car so its been off the road for 18 months now, plus lack of money does not help.

mk4 gttdi seats fitted and i love them, so much better than mk2s!

porsche vdos, stereo in centre console, and my old steering wheel thats followed me through 3 cars!

well after smoking about in it for 3 years, its been great but it needs some serious work now, floors are getting crusty and surface rust everywhere so i pulled it off the road in feb when the mot ran out and ive stripped it out ready for paint and bodywork.

the car had a few issues here and there, the engine had the dreaded chain rattle and a missfire, but ive never been overly impressed with the vr6 or the g60 before it. so........ i bought the orignal engine which id had in the pearl grey car at the start of the thread.

ive had 5 mk2s and the best had this engine in them. so its highly tuned 8v for the win.

my mate had bought a load of bits and the engine with a job lot of parts, and they sat in his garage for 3 years, offered him a small fee and im a happy man. so its strip out the vr6 bits and sell it as a conversion kit.

im not in a rush to do this as i want it done properly and i want the same set up as i had suspension wise so its ammasing parts time.

ill get some pics up soon......

Wow 13 years!! This is my only thread on the life of my car now, which I do still own. Its been off the road since 2017 and as usual things have gone kind of slow with it.

In the meantime I've changed careers, got married bought and paid for a house and had about 10 daily drivers!

I also learned to weld. The house had a decent size garage and I've filled it with tools to get this car done

However motivation is definitely a factor, as I say it's been parked for 7 years now and I have done a lot but more could have been done - it could have been finished!!

I'll get a proper update on soon and hopefully this might motivate me to make more progress as the weather gets better.
