I'm in Wales at the moment so haven't got my Haynes manuals to hand That was the best I could find.

At least we both know we're talking about the same part now Problems with that little bugger causes ignition problems so well worth a look as you said earlier.

Its not a DIS at all, it is that ignition control thingy, the DIS sits on top of it but i can't say i've ever seen one???

I hope i don't get sued by Haynes for this but ....

heres an update

took it to another specialist and got told it was the metering head. replaced this and it hasn't started since. the engine turns but wont fire up.....at all 

sounds as if it has got an air leak because on the 2nd turn of the key there is a loud squeaking noise - any ideas anyone???

the "popping" noise before was the sound of the engine flooding.

any help will be more than welcome

P.S it is a 1.8 8v

P.P.S both the 1600 and the 1800 have ignition amplifier modules!!!!!!

Is the noise coming from the injectors?

Its probably fuel burning in your exhaust, if the ignition cuts out when you're moving the fuel doesn't burn in the engine like its supposed to and get forced out of the exhaust instead, if the exhaust is hot enough it will light the fuel.
