Title: Fitting a tow bar to a MK4 GTI
Post by: rs_dude on 11 July 2011, 08:57
I want to fit a towbar to my MK4 Golf GTI, only really to carry a bike.  I've seen a VW detachable that looks pretty tidy.

Has anyone got any fitting/valance pictures?

I don't wan't to drill holes, are they already there?

A CR85, it will be rarely used and be taken about 10 minutes away.

I'm after one you can detach and not see!

i fitted towbars for about 5 years, the detachable ones allways need a masive bumper cut,a fixed ball looks an arse but at least if you take it off it wont kill your bumper.eather way go for a witter.Brink,a1 and westfalia are pants for the bumper cut on a golf

i forgot to explain why the cut is so big....your electrics fold up and down on a detachable but on a fixed ball they mount on a bracket witch is fixed to the bar eather behind the ball or just under the valance on the neck of the bar

I removed a Bosal detachable one from mine after the previous owner had it fitted. There is a small square cut out on the bottom about the size of a playing card. With the detachable towbar without the ball there was just a little black thing sticking out of the bottom with 2 bolts for putting the ball on or taking it off.

My old towbar is for sale...£100 + postage and you can have it or you could pick it up from west mids or southampton/portsmouth

i bought a second hand one from a neighbour who only carried a small box trailer back and for the skips, household rubbish
its a brink towbar
easily fitted
remove rear lights 3 nuts on each light and drivers side light has a locating pin which sits in a rubber so care should be taken to gently pop it out by pulling with your fingertips gently
bumper screws on top x2 bolts and 2 plastic lugs which you push the centres through with small pointy screwdriver
under wheel arhes think there was three a side
and underneath 6 bolts you can see them all when looking
unclip numberplate light plug from inside
 slide bumper off
remove bumper reinforcement towbar now slides in the chassis rails
holes are already drilled so just feel and poke a screwdriver through the undersealant
bolts easy enough
have to take exhaust off rubbers for passenger side 1 bolt easy done
i have a 2003 gt tdi 3 door
anniversary splitter had to cut about 3 inches x 4 inches approx but its on the underneath side so wasnt bothered

hope this helps. electrics im yet to do but ill put these underneath out of sight as not often i ll use them
