BUT and I dont say this lightly, It would seem I have stumbled on a possible museum car :lipsrsealed:
So a MASSIVE thanks to Clipperjay for going to view it for me this afternoon and sorting the deal, I will let him do the description, espeically the part about him buying it if I dont turn up with the cash
-
Well its true I said to the seller if Chuffy mucks you about (which he defo wont) give me a ring back!
IMO the car has seen 30K on it not stated 60K Apprently the old boy would drive it once a weekend then bloody wash the car polish it then cover it in the garage! He bloody loved that car words fail me!
QTR pannels, doors, wings, everything striaght I thought it had new calipers errr no they were 25 years old
Its got new water pump and belts and its just god dam too new! I found the crappy plastic scuttle pannel still in tact YEAH the sh!tty one I havent seen a new one intact since 1989!
Just dont mess with it, massage it and give it TLC that is all Chuff!!!
-

Well someone is pre booked to give it his magic touch ( not that it needs it apparently )
and jay has seen it, so his description is all I can go on.
Just spokee to the seller, and he said.
The old boy didnt drive it much but when he drove it, he washed it, he polished it, then tucked it away again,
The only thing he doesnt have is the FULL DOCUMENTED history, the old boys wife thru it away
-
Yeah the car reminded her of him with the amount of time he spent on it, sad really. But possibly we can find out if it was serviced from a local dealer and then get them to reproduce the service books for it as its a nice original car!
-
Welcome back to the Mk2 section!
Bit of tarting up and you can give Old Man River Thom a run for his money.

I'm undecided about the keep it standard argument.. I think as long as you do things which can be undone easily then it ain't too bad.. Like maybe keep the shocks and wheels if you change them. :/

That's why I said just wheels and a drop, bolt on parts easily changed back to OE. Is it just me, or are the best looking mk1s these days are the ones that are completely OE apart from the wheels and the drop, a mk2 as good as that, could easily pull that same look
Big up the OE but slightly modified circle!
Thom

I think it's like his signature or something.
Let's hope it gets a relay kit before the wee colouring on its headlights. Golf2s need all the help they can get with headlight output.

Exactly what I said to him, I was reminded that every vehicle including his bikes has had the chuff urine treatment bar the 20vt p155rat. I doubt that this vehicle will escape the headlight style commode mod.
Perhaps I'll be tempted to make him a loom if he wants................. :lipsrsealed:

Chuffs front lights V Lens rear lights
Hmmm but which is better, theirs only one way to find out!

-
C'est combien?
-
Schweeet!
Nick
-
well i weighed up the cost of getting it delivered which was £80 this afternoon short notice booking
against having to go back tomorrow after work and getting i etc etc
and as it took my 3 hours to get there today then I am fooking glad I did.
also its means I can hold off taxing it til the first of april, which means I will be good til end of september tax wise
at whcih point it will be re sorn for some with fettling
So, another 20 miinutes or so and it should be here as he wont be doing the speeds I was round the M25
-
right then, had the old girl on the drive for 30 minutes and had a good chance to check her over.
a few minor issues, but nothing that cant be easily sorted,

noooooooooooo to them wheels
looks like a spot on car u got there chuff id keep it as standered as possible and keep it
-
well the deal could have happened, but after going out and checking the old girl over,
a few " well chosen " words, and a few " abusive " words of advice by text and PM she can stay.
First priority is suspension, I have a few irons in fires for some 2nd hand kit
if not then it will be
http://www.europerformance.co.uk/pages/products/product_info.mhtml?product=3920618
then when I have saved up it will be a choice of wheels either some
Rota RBs
or
something really different and retro
http://www.wheelbasealloys.com/15_Inch_League_195_Alloy_Wheels__3130
So let the suspension hunts continue and the ciggie money that I put by continue to rack up enough to fund the rims
-
Av got a set of ta teckniks coilovers. Fronts have never been fitted if ur interested chuff
-
cheers mate but I am trying to avoid coilovers :lipsrsealed:

That Bilstein setup looks familiar. :lipsrsealed:
Not sure on RBs but then its always difficult to judge untill you've seen them on the car. I reckon something super retro/Period. 80s style is a must.
Damn it, why are you always round my neck of the woods when I'm away. It's deliberate, isn't it.

A trip out to Leicester ? Whoop ! I bet the Mrs can't wait for that jolly. You know how to treat the ladies you do.

It starts, it moves, forwards at the second attempt, the linkages are goosed.
all gears work
it stops, eventually
it steers ( or it could be classed as wallows )
Tickover is high, think the carb needs overhauling / replacing
so, tomorrow will be tinkering day
The Apec springs and Boge shocks i picked up from Vaughn ( cheers again ) look nearly new, so just gotta find out how low it actually is :lipsrsealed:
-
All easy fixes for a man of your skills  So have it lowered and running sweet by lunchtime tomorrow...

This, obviously.
its not on coilies
its not sump scraping low
it handles better than what looked like the orignal suspension
yes, well ruined
-
I think its looking better except the yellow headlights though :lipsrsealed:
Shame I couldn't drive it the tick over was high but I thought it was just cold didnt leave it long enough TBH.
Funny you say the carb might need a good clean because the chap said he wanted to webber convert it for his son so that said he might have known an issue with it, either way it should be a easy fix on it.
My old Pierberg unit needed taking off once in awhile and tollarances re-set on the butterfly's even a leaky rubber gasket plate can suck too much air in hard to say untill its off.
looks better lowered though
-
The yellow lights make it look like it needs to visit the GUI clinic.
-
     glad the yellow lights arent meeting many peoples approval, if only you knew
clippy, idle seems to have resolved itself, a good trash :lipsrsealed: with fresh fuel and some carb cleaner
to be fair theres nothing that seems a major worry with it, the gear change is " interesting " but just adds to the driving experience

Why didn't the Fecktra get the yellow light treatment then?

well having a lot of spare time at the moment has me considering some " left field " wheels
narrowed it down to 2 sets

well i thought I would apply the forum decal Jv sorted out for me
(http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp359/chuffs69/9ca2fbc4.jpg)
then thought about investigating the water leak that appeared when it was getting a good soaking care of Mr Tona.
so a bucket ( nearly got the hose out  ) of water was thrown over, and it appears to be coming down the clutch cable, onto the pedal then dripping down .
whilst under the dash I saw
and thought, no way, jay would have checked in there :undecided:
perhaps not then
No service book, but some paperwork which has given me a garage to contact to see if they have any history, and all the original books
(http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp359/chuffs69/fd3d608e.jpg)
so better than nothing

oook... here we go
I had a day with the old girl today... something I have been very much looking forward to for a while!!
I knew as the old girl had been looked after very well by some old boy that it would come up lovely, but even I was surprised at how good the paintwork quality was after all these years... I am not sure there are many, if any, modern day cars that will look brand new after a quick machine polish (apart from the odd dent) in 20+ years time?
so some pics... after the valet the other day I cracked on with a quick waterless wash (see... TONA are trying to help with water use reduction during the ban)... and then a clay bar treatment. I used an aggressive clay bar which did the trick of removing a lot of contamination, however I clayed a 5 year old Alfa last week which made the clay bar I used then twice as dirty.. which can only go to show how well Clive has been looked after.

Clive Dunn (http://www.flickr.com/photos/guyfrankland/6919788734/) by Guy Frankland (http://www.flickr.com/people/guyfrankland/), on Flickr
The clay bar did leave some marring which is visible in the left hand side of the above shot, but there was also a standard amount of swirl in the paintwork.
There were also some areas of bird lime marks which had attacked the clearcoat... I sanded these areas lightly using wet and dry and then polished them back up..
Sanded

I also asked Chuff to remove the door handles as there were significant marks under the handles which really needed a machine polish as the areas were marked from usage and were very dull
Before: (can't see too clearly all the scratches etc)

Once I had completed the machine polishing I then made sure the areas were free from polish residue. I then coated in Autosmart Silver Seal paintwork protection.

to be fair, it was a good car to start with
oh absolutely... i think i mentioned the quality of the original paintwork in my post, i didn't have shed loads of RDS (random deep scratches) to worry about which helped massively.
the chances of finding a 20+ year old car, in its original state, that only needs a single pass machine polish to make it look this good are probably in the region of 10,000:1 or maybe less.
can't wait to work on it again.

I sometimes tell people that Jade Green can take on the appearance of Chrome! when its highly polished that is... the comment is usually met with a vacant stare, as they wonder what I'm actually on about!
Jade is a very understated colour, dark enough to deeply reflect the sky and clouds, yet the grey/green seems to disappear as its over powered rich reflections, leaving the paint almost colourless...

I know... its a lovely colour and when you look at it very closely when it is clean, polished and has the sun on it, it has a kind of pearlescent effect deep within it... hard to describe but it is a very mesmerising paint to look at...
and yes... it was mint to start with, mostly, just needed a little bit of lovin to bring it back to showroom

Pull down unit sticking?
With the gasket base try some of that start spray stuff can't remember what its called, but its got octane in it.
If you spray around the base plate where the carb sits the idle should rev up by sucking the stuff in at that point you know you have a leak around there.
As for WAX stat there is a trick of chucking it into boiling water the heat resets the WAX and have known to sort it out?
RJ's guide is still good have you gone through the lot?

Couldn't agree more, a linkage kit only costs about £20 and completely transforms the gear shifting once done.

3 fails
5 advisories
Booked in at a mates garage spare ramp on Wednesday so I can fix things
-
What on earth did it fail on?!
Bet it's not 'corrosion within 30cm of a seatbelt mounting point, is it?
-
Hope they not too difficult/costly to fix
-
So, the 3 fails
60% brake imbalance on the front - but it seems to drive ok, knowing I road test cars at work, they cant believe I didnt notice
Steering rack gaitor split - this in turn is restricting the car going onto full right hand lock - again, they cant understand how i didn know when i am a picky fcuker when roadtesting cars at work
Emissions - co2 high - but when it was put back on the tester at lunch to adjust it - it was fine  :undecided:
So on wednesday it's front brake clean up, fluid change and steering rack gaitor change
Advisories were all niff naff ones, :smug:
not one mention of corrision or rot, and as the tester was getting QC'd it got a VERY good going over.
so not too bad considering its age, and a 04 plate 206 got condemned on the next test thru
-
if it was getting QC'd why did it not fail on plates?
-
if it was getting QC'd why did it not fail on plates?

wish i hadnt bothered
dash speakers - what a cnut to change when you have hands like shovels
then the string I had used to trace a path for the new aerial lead snapped :lipsrsealed:
75 minutes of try try and fooooooooooking try again to feed a wire coathanger back thru - even more difficult when on your own, trying to wiggle it under the bonnet reaching out of the car whilst trying to see the thing under the dash - and it starts raining - think my neighbours learnt some new words this avo
eventually got it done, fitted the new rear speakers and have given up - the under bonnet stuff can wait til wednesday when i go it indoors in my mates garage

stick a brand new weber on and leave the original engine in - it goes well just a pig to keep running when cold
or
stick a different lump in, but what, and it means a full brake upgrade too, VR6 or ABF on ream drums

I know of a certain black with blue trims mk2 driver that got converted to a 300bhp 1.8T and kept the rear drums.

Well as the very helpful man above has suggested, today was a trial run for the car after a disastrous saturday.
Got the Weber fitted,

and the car broke down on my mate on the test drive
It came back to life, so I collected it without issue.
Then on Saturday it broke down on me 3 times, and by process of Elimination and Part replacement and a call to the diamond isle, a faulty coil and or ignition amp was the cause.
AT NO POINT was it recovered, so no piccies, a good hit on both of the above got it going welll enough to get it home,
Today was its long range test after a few laps of the estate last night. and it made it despite a lot of puddles on the way.
so the Webers final fitment stages were completed and the CO level adjusted.
New up, lets see what MPG I get now, the last tank before weber change was 25 mpg
-
H'mmmm, one minor issue comparing Weber to Pierburg is that the Weber makes the car more fun to drive.
You'll need to be careful with that right foot to get comparable figures!
-
.... and Chuff's right foot is heavy!
-
You'll need to be careful with that right foot to get comparable figures!
erm, this car has never been driven carefully since my ownership   :lipsrsealed:
-
Took the car to work to re-check the CO levels and all was well
Also refilled it and have done a tank to tank MPG and the weber despite a good trashing has returned a healthy 34.8mpg :afro:
decided to give it a quick once over too, my job does have one perk I suppose.

German ebay was abused today for a new steering wheel & boss, and a few other trim items

New steering wheel is here  wrong fooking spline  adaptor on the way thanks to Devon Dub Shack (http://www.devondubshack.co.uk/) :smug:
After the bloody thing refused to start for ages on sunday at stoner ( thank fook Lewy was out of earshot  ) decided it was time to change the fuel pump tonight - so far so good - proper test will be on the way to volkfest this weekend
-
Oh, didn't know that. Max did comment on how you were still there and hadn't moved, I just thought you were having a tab.
-
nah, sat swearing at the fooking thing

They figured the owner would be grumpy; they're choosing their moment.
I'll let Himself outline what the actual issue was.
-
fcuk, must go collect it sometime
-
Something small and an easy fix I would guess!
-
and as usual Len, completely wrong :afro:
diagnosis on a ramp was required - 2 people required - which i did with the garage owner
once it was there, it stayed on the spare ramp in bits - cos he a very nice man
was then rebuilt at a VERY minimal cost to me as i had self diagnosed.
Sometimes it pays to use a free ramp and just throw a mate a few beer tokens rather than driveway spannering
further, my diagnosis has further assisted someone else with a similar issue
-
But still aint said what it was!
-
and wont
-
So i'll never know how wrong I was!
-
i know...
-
i know...
That Len was wrong. Think everyone knows that
-

tried selling it, twice on ebay.
got offered 4 french cars, 2 fords and a jap motor as a swap - oh and 3 cash offers for full asking price THEN they wanted a price without the cups. :lipsrsealed:
Erm, the full cash asking price you offered
So gave up, re-taxed it, then put some fuel in it, first time since july  which means its not had the use its should have.......
then I realised its still had more use than Thoms MkII and moved more than Shauns MkI has
-
Well i took it to the IoW to get the exhaust sorted  :lipsrsealed: and it went swimming, 3 times
So knowing I had a wet near side rear footwell already, it was time to act, so by 9am on my day off it was in this state.

NExt up tidy up / improve engine bay

Haz MOT. had to growl at the tester for a while, but all good for another year.
few advisories but all niff naff :smug:
-
Well after over 18 months ( a long time for a set of wheels for me ) on the car I finally took the Cups off ( for sale - see classifieds )
So a set of decent used set of 15 Steels ( G60s or Passat Winters - who cares : :undecided: ) with 4 good V12 Hankooks in the prefered 195-50 15s came my way
Now all I gotta do is decide which centre caps
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,
oh and anyone sport the 2 other changes / additions apart from the cups
-
Silver caps as it reminds me of my old 5dr 1.3
Would the new additions be an aa badge and the plates?
-
yep, got 2 cars with the same reg on the drive
I prefer the silver caps, more a GL kinda thing compared to the black with are more in keeping with a GTi
got some plain silver caps coming too
-
Looks good ! , its nice to have a selection .

Yes, like women and hangbags and shoes. It's great that Chuff knows how to accessorise - show's she's in touch with her feminine side!

It's a size thing.
Is that why you keep inviting me down to " advise " you on matters
Absolutely - I have (as well you know) very little idea when it comes to tidying up and nor does Dave.
-
What's a tidy?
-
It's the loop you make when you're tying the bow in your shoelaces, I think.
-
its what ended up in the boot of your daily Dave

Hello
-
Well the decision to swap out the Alloys and slam some Steels on has paid off already. :lipsrsealed:
A " cobweb clearing drive lead to a dent on the nsr wheel ( managed to miss it with the front, just  )
So out came the hammer
Next up, some engine bay improvements
-
Oh did you buy that ABF CE1 loom then?
-
No, tidying up improvements, not engine bay changing
-
So a bimble ( read driving a tad hard ) to Silverstone ended up with a reduced selection of gears
and a larger than normal gate into the remain couple of gears
having limped to silverstone to watch son in law race his Bini, it turned out it was Mk2 Golf Gti Champs too
so mid bodge with the Ty Wrap and tape, over come a couple of the Mk2 racers to look over the car ( no sunroof - ideal race shell     ) and see what was up
5 minutes later, a replacement part was forthcoming and all gears returned

-
needs some TLC :lipsrsealed:
You broke it (again)?
-
no, just added a few more things to the " needs attention " list
-
Well after 2 and a bit years of ownership I thought it was best to
1, change the oil
2, sort the gear linkage
added in a few other jobs to do and headed off to The Diamond Hell, and the helpful Danny P.
so, aswell as the above,
new top mounts fitted without dropping the struts off the hubs
New rear wheel bearings as they where noisey at MOT time.
