Living with a G60.......what's it really like???
« on: 29 April 2004, 14:36 »
Hi all
Having spent an awful lot of time and money unsucessfully trying to find a late 16v mk2 in mint condition I'm considering the very tough decision of maybe going for something different. I'm currently mulling over the possibility of a G60 corrado, however as are most people I'm a little bit concerned by all the G60 horror stories.
I wonder if a few of you with genuine experience of living with a G60 could fill me in???
I know the most important things are regular oil changes and rebuilds every 60,000 miles.
The oil changes I can quite happily live with but how much does a rebuild cost?
Has anybody ever had a charger completely fail?
How much would a replacement cost in the case of a terminal charger?
I've experienced many of the usual running problems along the way with my golfs but does all the extra G60 plumbing bring along a whole new set of problems?

Questions questions!!! Sorry but this really is a tough decision, currently looking for my fourth mk2 gti and I still love em to bits but proper genuine ones are becoming a rare find.
All answers will be greatly apprieciated.

Toby

Hi Toby,

I seem to remember having a chat with you a while back about seeing some mint mk2's near Fulbourn, Cambs - was that you?

If so, I will happily give you a demo of my Rallye. Should help make up your mind  ;D

Hi jv
Yeah that was indeed me. Unfortunately wrote off my oak green valver since then and it's been a long tiring search including a wasted trip to ediburgh trying to find a replacement. I would definately be interested in seeing your rallye and having a chat with somebody who has first hand experience of running a G60 vw. I've been considering a G60 golf but what with all the winding country roads out my way I just can't convince myself to go for a LHD motor. Therefore the G60 corrado seems the more sensible (and much cheaper) option. Having had 3 mk2 golfs in a row though I'm just worried I wont like the corrado as much.
Maybe we could sort something out soon.

Cheers
Toby

P.S. I still have a good ol drool everytime I drive past that house in fulbourn!

I was worried the lhd might be a bit annoying but so far no problem at all. If you are into mk2's I am not convinced a Corrado will keep you happy ;)

Not sure if you're still looking, but my friend is about to sell his G plate (big Bumper) Oak Green 16v

Anyone who saw it at Newark will tell you this thing is absolutely spotless. Not sure what money he wants for it, but I'm confident that you won't find a 16v with better bodywork this side of a concours car.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll pm you some details.
