Will have to get some pics up at the weekend when I get some day light time (our work car park is sh!te for pics), definitely loving the engine roar and the pull on it

The heated leather/suede seats were a welcome treat this morning when the car was reading the outside temp as -1C

Got a few niggles to sort out, but nothing major

So in the same awkward position as the Galaxy

Not bad MPG from a large engined heavy car, with two stops on the way home, I did see 31.8MPG Average until I had to make my first stop, went up to 31.6MPG until the second stop just before home and then total average of this, which I'm happy with

Keep an eye out for the fan shaft they tend to rust badly it did on mine (V6 triptronic TDI Passat)
Plus everytime you wash the car wipe down the door seals as they loose their effectiveness after time and suffer from water ingress like mine did.
I loved mine to bits if you bought this off Martz I bet he will miss it like I did mine?

The pollen filter is near the scuttle before you start hunting in the dash!
It makes a difference to get a new one if not for the improvement of blower/de-mister.
The price of it is another issue  :lipsrsealed:

pollen filter? about 8 quid i pay for them from memory

pollen filter? about 8 quid i pay for them from memory

I used to pay VAG about £15, but that was back in 2000 proberly cheaper now?
Its one of those things that gets missed because people think its in the cabin
Title: Re: Jay's V5 Passat of awesome
Post by: topher on 30 January 2012, 21:10
some parts are worth paying the extra to have the VW logo printed on them, cabin filters are not one of those parts

Can't be worse to get to than the Sh!taxy :lipsrsealed:

Will give it a full service in a month or so  The blowers/demister seems OK, but then the Sh!taxy's were very poor even after changing the pollen filter and pulling out all the leaves!

It's down by the pedals, like on the A4.
On my A4 (1999) the ODB port is under a flap (with the rear passenger ashtray) behind the handbrake between the front seats.

That's the earlier A4, i meant 2001 onwards, which is the same as the Passat.

Defo under the steering wheel / driver dash, just had a look, and quite possibly a tw@t of a position for a vag com cable or Bluetooth OBDII dongle

Easy to connect a lead (well the a4 is, I did one last night)... and how are you getting 30mpg? (I get less in my 1.8t)

Post by: Jay on 31 January 2012, 20:08
Driving 'sensibly'    (and being stuck behind twits doing 40-50 in 60 zones and unable to overtake due to oncoming traffic)
Tonight's journey was 29.9MPGz. This mornings  :lipsrsealed:
Title: Re: Jay's V5 Passat of awesome
Post by: Martz on 31 January 2012, 20:10
It really is not as bad as people make out on fuel, all depends how you drive them. If you want to acheive 22mpg then floor it everywhere, if you want a good return then drive sensible and still have a bit of fun.

Post by: Jay on 01 February 2012, 22:25
31MPGs tonight, I think this is going to turn into a game  Well at least on the way home! The journey in however... I think I'm going to see how low it goes  f#cking traffic.

Very good purchase, Wayne. People at work been commenting on it and my friend wants the number plate (going back to Martz this weekend sadly  )

Loving the roar at 4k+

Traffic was nonexistant for most of the way home and I still managed above 28mpg  Just.

Had a warning light flash on and off all the way in to work giving me a heart attack every two minutes :lipsrsealed: Fooking low on washer fluid

I'm thinking of Velcro in the recessed areas and number plate tape on the flat areas as prescribed, best places to get Velcro is a sewing shop I guess?

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/shop/golfgti-co-uk-number-plate-frames/

Just wondering if I've got the correct screws in my many pots jars ( rear has some proper screw holes already ) or if I have to make a trip to Halfords, blud.

Other things to sort out in time are:
Replace Front bumper with new/good condition unit, got a scuff and a few clips are broke, but still sits fine.
Passenger side head lamp, a bit old and "foggy", OEM (£100+) or cheaper ebay unit (£60)  :undecided:
O/S/R door sticks a bit when opening, think it's the door card loose at the bottom and catching, hopefully it's the yellow clips which I've got a few of.
Bonnet release mech

and a good old service

Title: Re: Jay's V5 Passat of awesome
Post by: Jay on 14 February 2012, 19:22
Then I'd have to get it reaimed  I was contemplating on doing it that way though as the thought of damaging the car with a drill and sand paper isn't at all appealing.

Managed to do the front number plate, but not the rear as the anti theft lugs on the boot lid are a PITA and my corldless drill ran out of juice with 1 battery (hadn't been charged up since it was last used 2 weeks ago) and the other battery I thought was on charge, but wasn't  :lipsrsealed: So the number plate is sitting in the rear window for the time being, will try to get it sorted tomorrow at work if I have time and if my cordless drill has the grunt to make a hole in metal

Also got the tax disc holder in.

After spotting a thread on UKPassats by Boney ( cheers :afro: ), I'm going to clean up the head light myself without that 3M kit, I'm going to try a coarser grade, fine then finer and a bit of t-cut and plastic polish/wax for protection

My wife is going to be on the insurance soon  :lipsrsealed:

Why was I against women having lower insurance premiums, just for being female?  Doh!

But she has to be confident enough (and I in her) to drive it before I put her on the insurance, she's only had 2 hours with a driving instructor and they got told off for driving around the culdesac he took her down to practice the basics because an old ladies cat likes to lay in the road and she was scared it'd get run over

Maybe not, existing insurance broker won't cover her, to take out another / change my policy with my insurance company (different broker) would be £2360 for the year  Money Supermarket comes back with the cheapest being £1252 paying that off over a year ...

The car is safe for a while longer

Thinking of getting a bit of vinyl for the interior trim or spraying it, however, I can't decide on what wrap or colour to go for. I know I don't want carbon wrap, it's not my thing. I'll get some pics of the interior to show what the colour / texture is like now.

Alternatively I could go for original OEM trim replacements.

Post your thoughts, opinions and suggestions below

What colour though? I wouldn't mind black as it'd go nicely with the leather interior & door cards, But Black trim is usually found on base spec models... that's why I was thinking of a black leather effect wrap. Always up for different ideas, as long as it'll look good in the car with the leather interior.

The worst of the trim.

If you rub them down you'll get brushed aluminium

Sounds like a (cheap) plan :afro: any old grade of sand paper or any in particular to get a good finish?

So after seeing the aftermath of a car vs young girl on a push bike this morning outside my place on the main road I took it easy on the way into work and home, that coupled with constant moving, but slower than normal traffic yielded this without trying  It did include some swift over taking on some dual carriage ways too!

It actually got to 34.3 at one point, then got caught at a set of traffic lights 5 mins from home and it dropped. and yes I know it needs a dusting, I'm still waiting on a price from Mr Tona to sort some scratches out.

Tim, have you got any pics of the brushed metal effect you get from rubbing down the trim? Most of the images I'm finding are MK4 R32 trims, I assume it's roughly the same in look to the DIY stuff?

Have a read through there. Or google sanding net optic trim. Haven't tried it myself.

Going to start on sanding the crap back on the trim this evening and will pick up some lacquer tomorrow to protect it.

I really wasn't in the mood for a fast drive last night, so thought I'd play the MPG game while listening to some good tunes while being Mr Taxi.

Didn't get round to doing the trim after all last night :embarassed:

But this afternoon whilst giving her a clean, I took out the Nokia cradle that was in there and am now thinking of how I'm going to put my phone's dock on the metal mounting plate that is still there - it may require a little fab work to either the current dock or the mounting plate though.

Other plans are to add in the ISOFIX brackets for the car seats as it's a PITA getting them in and out as often as I have to.

No going back now  :undecided:

Not bad  Still needs a bit of touching up to make it perfect.

Now to pop out the rest of the trim and get sanding, I used 150 to get the majority off & 400 grit to smooth it down.

Looking for a guide on how to remove the rest of the trim in a Passat, found one for a left hooker Golf... assuming it's a similar process I might get this done in the next 6 months

If you find a guide on removing the rest let me know as I really want to change my wood from brown to ebony black (I stripped my old ssat but can't remember how it all came apart!)

b.t.w You can't be driving right...I still get under 30mpg on mine (ok it's turdo but still!)

Will let you know if I find a 'sat guide. It can't be that different to a Golf 4 left hooker (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?967146-DIY-Removing-interior-parts-II-(dash-trim-brake-light-switch-radio-cupholder-radio-HVAC-cage)) can it ? :lipsrsealed:

That 38MPG was a one off, using 5th in 30 & 50 zones on a 12 mile drive, my average is 27MPG on trip comp 2 since I last reset it.

I've still got to clean up the head light as per your guide on UKP, the problem is when I have free time it's always bloody raining!

Treated the beaut to a clean today  Could still do with a proper TONA scrub, but that means spending more than £8 on a platinum wash

I should really put together a list of things I want to sort out on her...

I was going to remove that but it is a fantastic take a way holder, curry, chinese etc etc.

Should have used it the other night, the Chinese fell over and almost spilt it's load over the passenger footwell   Still got to decide how to mount my phone dock to the metal plate from the old nokia dock...  :undecided:

Replaced the auto-sensing wiper relay (192) with the manual selection relay (377) so I use the switch on top of the stalks for the lower speed settings, the auto sense bit didn't work and is a common problem on Passats.

Also got round to ordering a Turtle Wax head light resto kit, I don't want to take the headlight out the car to use a drill attachment and don't fancy damaging the paintwork with a drill attachment with the headlight on the car, I also don't have polish to use so would have worked out more expensive buying the polish & sealant etc

Just hope it stops raining by the time it comes from the good old U S of A

you mean the random-wiper relay!! It's good fun watching the wipers fly across the screen in drizzle and then count 4 seconds when it really pour's, and mine are apparently working correctly

Post by: Jay on 30 April 2012, 20:03
No, mine didn't work at all unless on the highest setting on the stalk switch and then it was every 10+ seconds

It now goes from like 8 on highest to 2 seconds on lowest (guestimated) with the 377 wiper relay, dropping the drivers side dash down to change it makes it so much bloody easier!

So I walk out to my car this morning to find blood splattered across the N/S/R door, two dents in it and another f#cking deep scratch  Not f#cuking happy  The guy who lives at the house where my allocated parking space is had a fight last night, we didn't hear it but got told a little while later by a friend who saw the whole thing.

Anyone know how easy these would come out or if it's new door job ?

On a better note I had a free afternoon today so sorted out the headlight, looks much better than what it did! It doesn't look brand new, but it sure as hell looks 100% better than what it did this morning

Forgot to take a before shot when it was yellowish, but this is what it looks like now.

Turtle wax head light restorer

Just about to go pick her up from getting the temp sensor and passenger side CV replaced, the mechanic couldn't replicate the noise and to be fair I've only heard it a handful of times with the passenger window down but at least it's done and don't have to worry about it now, peace of mind and all that.

Might the noise be a top mount or bush? Good to hear little bits sorted though. How about a discreet little spoiler for the boot? Saw a few at Inters and personally think they suit it.

Dunno, but he wasn't able to replicate it even on the crap back roads around Benson / Wallingford or on the ramps so I said might as well replace the passenger side as the drivers side was done last year and gives me peace of mind knowing it won't need doing. He replaced the temp sensor and said it still isn't working so probably something else (wiring at the back of the clocks like I've seen A4/A6's suffer?), but it worked this morning all the way in when I picked up so I'll keep an eye on it. He also found a leak in the radiator which needs doing at some point soon.

It also needs a service, it had 1500 miles left before the service was due then change to Service Now suddenly about a week ago.

It's a good thing I've got a car savings account for maintenance now so I can get all these things done without seeing it come out my normal account

nrgh... the new sensor hasn't fixed the intermittent temp reading on the coolant temp gauge and he wasn't sure what else it could be. Best to some research.

I was wondering that, I've read a few posts else where, the same issues were occurring and the sensor was replaced along with the thermostat at the same time so no definite cause

But just to be clear, it goes from 0-90 in about a second when it decides to work and the car has been running 5-10+ mins, does that still correlate with the stat being duff?

Will see how big of a job replacing a rad is as do the stat at the same time.

She needed a little work to get through the MOT - all sorted now though after a bit of a let down.
The garage had a choice of two hire cars, 1 being a small auto thingy and the manual 206. Having never drove an auto before and not wanting too, I thought "how bad can the 206 derv be?"  :lipsrsealed:  Quite bad as a matter of fact. My Passat with more than twice the mileage and 3 years older feels so much better in every single way.

That's another years MOT sorted

Only issues were two I knew about, 1 of which was a LED number plate light which I got off ebay for £4 and melted/bowed the clear plastic casing and board!  I contacted the seller, he sent another, it also done the same so gave up and let the garage sort that - the other being the exhaust which started blowing a week and a half ago.

It had a few advisories which I'm going to get them to sort out, nawt major.

It would appear the timing chain has gone, so much for part exchanging it this weekend coming.

RIP beast.
