hi all had a search and cant find it if there is one, but just got hold of a cheap OBD2 usb connector for my laptop and got VCDS Lite off Ross-tech so can scan for faults maby even do some loging, i have a Bluetooth OBD2 dongle for my phone and dont trust the apps to read faults correctly etc but like the Torque Pro App.
So my Q is, is there dummies guide for VCDS Lite hanging about for my mk4 TDi Golf.
Thanks
(sorry if been asked before)

Have you tried the ross-tech website??
There is an interactive help for VCDS - the light version is quite similar.....
but "cheap OBD2 usb connector" does not sound promising though.... probably a cheap chinese copy with forged FDTI chip which will suffer terrible timing issues... hence you won't be able to establish comms with ECU...
for logging you might need to get a licenced copy of VCDS light, can't remember if that is available for the shareware version.... not too bad, yours for about 65£ straight from ross-tech.

Yer been on the interactive help for VCDS which is helping.
The cable connects fine and seams to scan just dosnt bring up any faults which surprises me

well, last image says it all (or not)....
latency test: poor
(although it's not very high, probably could do with some trimming in device settings, I have connected to cars with that kind of latency with no issue)
which controllers did you try to scan?
that error message usually comes if there is no response from a certain address.
PS: your laptop has a "print" or "prtsc" button, this takes a screenshot... no need for cam phone ;)

tried engine and one other which i cant remember lol
i know but it was quicker to do that then dont have to take my laptop in to the studio at work

try fiddling with latency setting in the device manager -> com ports -> try to reduce the latency time to 2ms
and play with buffer size.... say 256 for in and 512 for out.
you might just get it to work with that.

came across this
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=119806.0
so tried it and now can scan, well .... auto scan i get a message which says
"This fuction requires VCDS-Lite to be Registered and activated. Please contact the Auther or your distibutor for an activation code."
after its scanned and got two faults ABS brakes and one just called engine "No Fault code found"
Which when i scaned the ABSon its own says no faults
so if i do the above will that help:?
-
what were the faults reported?
did you clear them?
yes for autoscan you need registered vcds light.... (but thb not one of the reasons why i bought it)

in auto scan which picked them out couldnt clear them (gray'd out)
and when scanned the ABS module wasn't a error in it.

Yeh, attempting to do this too...Khare off of here showed how its done, made it look easy lol...
Anyway, I got my lead, installed it all, now I'm testing the port! Mines com1
I get
Port status:OK
Interface: Found!
Type: serial Pass-through
Opto/Iso: Yes
Ross-Tech design: no
Latency Test:Poor
7.9 10.9 11.9(ms)
Tried changing settings as explained here...no luck....any ideas???
Thanks
