Change the fuel filter matey, mine was a tad loud wen i first got it, changed fuel filter for a genuine vw one and is alot quieter now, sadly deisels do sound crap but atleast we can get 500-650 miles to a tank unlike the petrol heads which get more like 300-400

i put a new one on 10k ago, does it really matter what make it is thats on there? my mot is next week anyways so im gonna see how the golf looks after me, or its getting a new owner!!
