BTDT on all the Mercs/BMW's and hate Audis. I'm actually quite interested in the Volvo V60 plug in hybrid, does c. 20 miles on electricity which is enough to get me to work for a recharge and back without costing me a penny, then on the motorway it does 57 mpg. It's also 4WD and does 0-60 in about 6 seconds. Volvo advertises it, but can you see one, or buy one? No. Of course not.

That is what I was looking at before I went for the Golf and you would have thought 12 months later they would have got their act together. But no. I really wonder what will happen to dinosaurs like VW when an efficient car company (or is that an oxymoron) enters the fray.

When they start making cars no-one wants (if that ever happens) then they will fall flat on their arse. I honestly thought they might get their come-uppance with the MK6. The GTI and GTD were 20% more expensive than their outgoing MK5 equivalents for a slight interior quality improvement but hardly any other discernible extras and a step backwards externally IMO. Not sure whether the MK7 has had so much kit thrown at it to make it look massively better value than the MK6 because of poor MK6 sales? Did they not meet expectations or are VW being perceptively more generous with the MK7? All I know for sure is that in my locality MK5s outnumber MK6s about 3 to 1 and they were out for about the same length of time each.

Everyone thought the Koreans coming in would revolutionise the market with long warranties, big spec and low prices. In reality their prices have been climbing to the point they don’t look especially cheap. I found myself looking at the Volvo V40 the other day when in the Metrocentre – there is a Volvo shop/showroom in a shop space next to Debenhams and I passed it – quite a handsome car in the flesh (especially in the Azure blue shade they had – it’s called something else) apart from the fussy back end.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Thanks Monkeyhanger and Matchboy. They are comforting words in these frustrating times!

I have thought about cancelling several times but seeing other people's reactions when they get their car convinces me its best to hang on.

Back on 30 Aug 2007 I reported a problem with my new Golf GTI DSG.
From day one it started to go wrong. First, second and sometimes third the gearbox would clunk quite badly, and would roll back some four car lengths before the box would bite.

After much arguing with my retailer they replaced the mechatronic (part of the box). More arguing and they then replaced the gearbox complete. However, the problem still remained. After that come denial after denial of any problems.

Trading Standards supplied me with a company that specialised in reporting whether a car was faulty or not. It cost £174 and the outcome was that the car was not fit for purpose. Even then the retailer refused to do anymore work, saying it was a characteristic of all golf gti's with DSG. I asked them to show me, yet after trying 3 different GTIs none had the same issues.
The mechanic stated there was a problem but the managers stated there was no problem as they had driven my car and as far as they were concerned the car drove perfectly in never way.

I then asked for the principle manager. When he arrived he immediately stated I had been mis-sold a car and would source a new one. I even received an email from the new sales manager stating he would deal with it when he came back off holiday. In the meantime I was told to call the manufacture. Many calls later I was given my own manager. She told me they were going to send down a technician to investigate. I agreed but shortly I could not get in touch with that manager again and was informed that the technician was cancelled. Why, I have no idea.
Much more went on and I was completely put off of ever dealing with them again.

I will say. When it was first purchased and the gearbox behaved it's self I loved that car and I loved that gearbox. However, I was unaware of what was to come.

After 7-8 months of hell I had decided to part company and join another manufacture and retailer. Since leaving them I have purchase 4 brand new cars, each to the value between 26000-30000. I guess they lost a customer who would have gone on the purchase more from that retailer had they have treated me as they say they do but I guess I was not valued enough.

I would not want to put anyone off purchasing a Golf. No, that would not be me. They are fantastic cars but I would hate anyone to be placed in my position. It was hell.

Jimble and others. Sorry mate I thought I'd posted in the same place as a discussion on the recall, seen in Autocar.

"Volkswagen UK has given further information on why it sees no reason to issue a recall for its seven-speed dual shift DSG gearbox-equipped cars, despite similarly equipped cars in other parts of the world being recalled."

Not been here since 2007, so not unto speed.

My deepest apologies.

^^ It's a 6 Speeder in the GTI bud. I know you probably know this already but if talking about the GTI, the above comment from VW isn't accurate.

Sounds like you had a nightmare though, seems like a few niggles with the new model were around, hopefully sorting themselves out!
