Loss of reverse! In need of help?
« on: 05 October 2015, 17:04 »
Hi Folks..

I've just removed my Golf MK4 2002 2.0 8v engine and replaced it with the same. You might wonder why not the 1.8T. I haven't got enough funds for that at the moment. Anyway, Apart from the transplant going according to plan
I've now lost reverse gear! The whole gearbox/linkage used to work 100% before going back in.
The gear lever now goes into the slot so to speak but I get forward motion instead!
And the gear lever will barely go rightwards if you get my meaning?

So I'm lost as to what's gone wrong?
And I've ripped out my other Golf MK3 GTI lump 3 times with success.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheer's
Rob

Sounds like gear linkage needs adjusting.

I thought as much. I just found it odd because when I disconnected the two linkages, I made sure I didn't touch the entire linkage at all including the gear lever, as not to disturb the setup. Once the weather dry's out over the next few day's? I'll give it a go at adjusting the linkage. Since this post I found a helpful vid on YouTube

Thanks for your response

I was going to suggest that very diesel geek vid.

And that link became very helpful. So in the dark tonight with a small torch in my gob! I did exactly what the video described to the letter.. But still I can't get reverse! The gear lever goes into the reverse slot, but still I go forward's! lol.
Annoying it's becoming
So I will try again tomorrow after work if it's not raining??

Can you get the box into reverse if you engage the gear manually directly on box?

Yeah, no problem there. 1 through to 5 inc reverse. I've even watched the mechanism go through the gears one by one on the gearbox end, and it even went into the gate for reverse on the gear lever at the same time. Still I only get the forward motion. Another indicator would be that when I assume I'm in reverse on the gear lever, the reverse light's don't come on.

I'm really stumped on this one

Problem all sorted.. Just a few more mins on adjusting the gear linkage late this afternoon and hey presto, gained reverse gear again. So all in, a successful engine replacement. Only took two weeks around my 40hr work week. Two weekends and a few late nights under my gazebo lol.

And it was easier than what I thought
