Need a difinitive answer on panel vs CAI
« on: 02 October 2015, 11:15 »
I have been looking everywhere at this and there seems to be a mixed opinion on forums of what is 'best'

BUT all the tuning information provided from the remap companies state that at a stage 2 tune a CAI is needed

the dilemma I have is that I have the Carbonio and the pipercross panel/sanded box and DSG parts available to me. personal preferences the Carbonio does feel quicker and more torque but its loud as hell, pipercross is nice and quiet but at what feels like the expense of the power....
I don't have the grill at the front of my bumper so air is drawn from underneath

so if anyone has any factual proof of one over the other please let me know
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)

WOW! good luck getting that answer, from all the research I've done I was still none the wiser, I've looked on SCN/TT/ASN/UKMKIVS/Briskoda all saying the same thing, nobody seems to actually know. Some forums say, CAI and Induction lose you Torque but gain you BHP, still waiting to see positive proof on that.
Most popular options seems to be,

1: S2000 (standard or K&N) with or without heatshield,

2:  CAI, with quality filter on the end, but stay well away from standing water,

3:  mod the airbox, smoothed and 3"or4" feed, or smoothed top half and drill big holes in bottom half, (Wak mod)

enclosed filters like the BMC, Piper Viper seem to get the least favourable reviews and rob your car of a few horse's.

I've tried smoothed air box with 3" feed and Pipercross C0177 induction kit with heatshield and can honestly say not noticed any difference performance wise, airbox the quieter of the 2, notice the noise from the induction kit more with the windows up and a heavy right foot.
Will stick with the Piper for now till positive proof appears.
