Rear Camera fail - How to repair?
« on: 29 June 2019, 16:22 »
Your help would be greatly appreciated in helping me solve my rear camera picture display failure and best way to repair.

I have found the failure to be a red wire that has come disconnected / broken from a connector box that is located within the rear badge. I guess all the flipping up and down over the years have finally taken a toll. It does look like VW could have given it a bit more wire and a thicker gauge as the current one is tiny.

Can I remove the badge dismantle this connector and replace the wire from where it has failed, thinking this maybe a sealed unit?

There is no wire exposed from the badge connector to be able to rejoin the original wire to that routes back to the headunit I would imagine.

Anybody else had this issue? how's it resolved?

I have exactly the same problem. The cable does pull out from the back of the camera but trying to repair it is almost impossible unless you have child size fingers. i know a guy who does model railways so i am going round to see him tomorrow and see if he can do anything with it. He has repaired it previously. I have spoke with the stealer and the cable isn't available on it own. I have searched the web but can't find one. You have to buy new camera and cable  which is £264 plus Vat....
I think if i get it repaired it will happened again due to the up and down motion as the wires are so thin its a weak point. Some it looks like i will have to save my pennys. I will see what my guy has to say and report back.

Thanks Simon, pretty poor from VW not thinking this through testing. Have you thought about adding some wire to the length then after joining back to he connector from where it has broken away, then secure the excess to the unit to prevent the stress of the badge flipping being at the connector but further along where more wire has freedom to flex. If you have joy can you let me know and take a picture or two, I have access to a electrical workshop full of engineers with I would imagine the skills to repair this if its possible.

I never thought i used it that much until the screen is blank...

Where did you get the quote from on a replacement if I have to go down that route?

thanks

Peter it was just a broken wire on mine which i asked my guy to put along piece in and appears to be working again although the picture quality doesn't appear to be as good. My guy was prepared to work on something so small. If you have know somebody who has the talent to do such a job details of the connecters are here which i found on a South African forum:
https://www.vwclub.co.za/forum/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=203959&start=25
They can be purchased through RS Components UK.
Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Peter,
I have just ordered one of these:https://www.kufatec.com/en/volkswagen/vw-golf/golf-6-5k/original-vw-audi-oem-camera-7p6980551c?number=5K0980551. Half the price of VW in the UK. My camera has stopped again and i know its the cable i repaired.
When it arrives it will let you know.

Update camera is still working fine picture quality is as good. Fitting was easy. Appears to be OE. I am not really bothered about this as it half the price from a stealer.

thanks Simon, my car is due a service next month so I will run the issue past them, as I've already diagnosed the problem. It's a VW Specialist not a main stealer. Can you confirm you only purchased the camera at €169, did you receive any wires with it?

thanks

I have just seen my own error in looking at the camera you suggested. The one you purchased was the €129 one with the cable included, currently unavailable...I will search for other suppliers.
