Title: Saying hi from Italy
Post by: Powerman80 on 15 January 2021, 21:01
Hello my name is Marco from Milan Italy.

I'm hopefully about to buy a Golf GTI and I've been lurking to clear my ideas.

Really need help from the UK camp as the car is almost non-existant in Italy

Benvenuto Marco. Come va?
I’m surprised to hear the market for gtis is small in Italy. They certainly like their golfs.
What are the more common hot hatches there currently?

What are you looking to buy?

Not many people look at this part of the forum, so I would advise you post a more specific question on the model specific boards.

Tutto bene!

It probably has to do with delivery delays, I think it's a good market too also because the GTI sits just behind the tax tresholds. But there are so many direct imports from Germany that dilute the market at the moment. Cars that are 5k cheaper but have 1 or 2 years with no warranty left.

I started considering the Cupra Leon Hybrid which was super cheap with incentives but since this is a mid-life crisis car I decided to go with a new petrol

I always liked the GTI, but I thought it would be too expensive based on listed price. So I went to see the Octavia RS but I realized the Golf has good discounts and would be only 3k more expensive with more resale value.  So here I am!

Other hot hatches... not really. With the taxes, they are much more expensive. For example, the Type-R has a 1600€ carbon tax at purchase and a whopping 1800€ road tax per year. There's a 20€ per kilowatt surcharge over 185.

Ah, I see what you mean- the availability is limited in Italy currently.
Yes, this is where this forum can be very useful- there’s quite a few people have tested and taken delivery of mk8s- i see you’ve posted on the mk8 board now. Best of luck
