Insurance Modification Declarations
« on: 31 March 2011, 16:50 »
Hey,

Been having a bit of a nightmare with this today.  Obviously I dont want my insurance to be void, so must declare all modifications.  I havnt bought the car yet but I like it a lot.
The guy selling the mk4 gti 1.8t is chucking in a new intercooler kit, new throttle body, 4 bar fuel reg and stainless exhaust mainifold.  This was in preperation of the stage 2 map he wanted to put on, but now he has to sell.  I would like to continue with the modding but when I proposed to them that I would be doing this in the future, I was told that they might not beable to insure me.

So my question is this:  Can I pretend that the car already has the stage 2 remap with all parts fitted, when they havn't yet been?  Surely in the result of a claim, they will say "oh, you dont have the upgraded part here, just the oem", I cant see how that would be a problem.

Just annoying how they will insure me on a car which already has mods, but not on one which I may mod in the future (aka invalidating my insurance).

Any help would be very much appreciated.

just an update on my quest for insurance.

Phoned my current insurance (admiral), who ive been with for 4 months on my corrado vr6.  It seems they wont insure me on a car with 25%+ increase from standard bhp.

I dont really want to have to pay out again for new insurance, but i dont really know what else to do.

any help?

So you reckon I would be alright just getting it insured in the 15-25% bhp increase bracket?  Would this not void my insurance if I had to claim?

Just to clarify I have not bought the car yet, just want to.  If the insurance goes ahead do you reckon it will be fine to tell them that the other parts included are already fitted, so not to get caught out and have to pay stupid money when I actually fit them?

My insurance is due in November so cant afford to pay out again so soon.  Its either try to sort it out with admiral or choose another car.

Its not looking good.  I've had a couple of quotes now, but tbh I dont want to paying way more than my current insurance on my VR6.

Adrian Flux:1.4k
Sky:1.375k
HIC:  Phoned almost an hour ago, was told they would ring back, as of now havn't.
Chris knott: no insurance unless over 25.

Stupid as VR6 is practically the same power as the golf in question.

Looks like I'll just have to get a standard 150bhp mk4, as I cant afford the anni.

Why not put the Anni back to standard.

I presume this means that they're not fitted yet? If not, simply keep them until you're able to afford to insure them. Alternatively, as has been mentioned already, you WILL need specialist insurance if you are to be legal and above board. Do NOT try to blag it as you're likely to get found out.

There are lots of cars I could afford to buy but not insure (and I am old!). If I can't afford them, I don't have them. Shame, but that is life. One thing I would say though as a bit of friendly advice: Don't get yourself into big debt over a car; it is after all, just metal, plastic, cloth and rubber.

Keeping schtum. Mostly.
