Title: claying/polishing... whats better to use and is it worth it?
Post by: boneybradley on 24 February 2008, 19:41
Right as i'm lazy and dont properly clean the car very often..I have the following question
I currently use meg's 3 stage products and then use a paint sealer on top of this (some made by carplan i believe) .. I am now noticing the paint has started to go dull and was wondering if claying and using a better wax will restore the clean shiney look.
I have looked at some products and would also like to know in sonus green clay better than meg's and wether using collinite as listed on another thread will give superior results to meg gold class or nx.
I get some good discount on megs products (and thats why i use them now) and wonder if the other products worth more cash!!

get the Sonus Green Clay and use the Megs Quik Detailer.

you can continue to use the Megs wax but if you want durability i'd go for Collinte 915; got it on my car and its awesome; well worth the £20 for a pot

Clay
Polish
Seal
Wax

Job done :afro:

your auto glym cheap stuff is crap for washing!!

hope you're using a mitt btw?

bilt hambler auto wash is the muttz nutz... you only need 5ml per wash!

as for megs and clays etc... megs clay breaks up and I prefer sonus green

the collinite 915 is a great wax...  but i found it produced a much nicer result when I used the collinite 845 sealant first

http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=26&products_id=113 (http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=26&products_id=113)

collinite is quite hardwearing too... the jetseal 109 really is good even though it is all the rage at the moment.. combine that with the chemical guys 50/50 wax and you get
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2211/2253904968_0c58a36f92.jpg)

and snow foam... is an attachment if you have a pressure washer which you can use to cover your car in luvvely suds!

yep you are right Di but you also need a snow foam gun...

you can get both in this deal... I would have them but I don't have a hose!

good question on the mohair... I would hesitate a guess at yes... do you use normal car shampoop on it?

why not do paintwork with snow foam and a specialist soft top cleaner like renovo?

Hi
I would stay away from snow foam on Mohair because most snow foams have an element of TFR (traffic film remover) in them. TFR could over time start to bleach or fade the colour out of your hood.

Don't forget when using snow foam it gives best results if left to dwell on the car for 10-15 minutes.

I would use Snow foam on the lower half and if the hood needs a clean from time to time a regular ph neutral shampoo or branded product made for cleaning the hood.

After spending saturday making the outside look good...I spent an hour cleaning under the bonnet after seeing what kells has done to his! just need to paint the rocker cover and clean some other bits (like the bonnet catch etc)
After buying the new wax I thought I would put my meguires stage 1 cleaner and stage 3 wax to good use and used this on the metal parts and then autoglym bumpered the plastics...I like the results  even the underside of the bonnet shines now!

yep... drop the extra microfibre cloths... you will get those in the collinite kit

you can drop the AG super resin polish as you are claying and then waxing... AG super resin polish is also very harsh and can cause swirls

you can change the poorboys super slick suds to bilt hambler - best shampoop i have used so far!

Some sort of polish would be a good idea as the wax layer is simply there to protect the polished surface and in some cases enhance the finish achieved through polishing. Wax on its own after clay will produce a better finish than the car has at present although if you miss the polishing stage you might be disappointed in the results. SRP wouldn't be my choice but many people use it with good results - just don't get any on your plastic trim

If your clay bar doesn't come with lube you will need to buy some.

you just need something called detailing spray to lubricate the 'clay' as you won't be able to move it over your paintwork otherwise...

http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/index.php?cPath=68&page=1 (http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/index.php?cPath=68&page=1)

personally I would use a cheap megs quick detailer such as this http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=68&products_id=36 (http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=68&products_id=36) when i am claying as you will end up using a lot of the bottle... some people dilute the spray 50/50 with water (although I don't do this and IF i did I would use filtered water)

Title: Re: claying/polishing... whats better to use and is it worth it?
Post by: Cornish Pixie on 11 April 2008, 10:35
You can cut down on the amount of lube used by claying the car after it has been washed and before it is dried. i.e. with the rinse water still on it. This method also helps to cut down on the potential for marring the paint.

A mix of good quality shampoo and water in a spray bottle can also be used as lube - just make sure their is enough shampoo in the mix to provide lubrication.
