Title: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 12 March 2015, 21:02
So I thought I would start a thread for this car.
I bought it off Ebay on 1st March 2015 and yet again got drawn in by the look the car has, it reminded me of the cars I used to have in my teens and I paid well over the odds for this car considering but hey ho. I am determined this car will be back on the road, I know a lot of people out there will tell me to scrap it but thats not going to happen...

So, here is my 16v GTi with BBS kit fitted at the dealership when it was new :-) It has full service history and has had thousands spent on it.

Seeing how the car looks now its incredible and incredibly stupid that I managed to drive it home 100 miles after 6 years laid up on someones drive
I took the car for an MOT when I got it home and it failed on 20 different points being brake hoses, top mounts and body corrosion...
So I took the car straight to a friend at a bodyshop to see what nasties lurked under the boykit...

Most people at this stage would cry, be angry, give up, scrap it etc but not me... im a stubborn one and if my bodyshop guy says he can fix it then he can. He said this is not the worst he has seen and he is confident he can do it so gonna crack on

I see why you bought it now

I know it's WAY down the list, but those rear seats

Also not going to lie, this makes me feel good about the compatible tiny amount of rust mine has, which at one point thought was fatal.

GOOD LUCK!

so today i went to help with the car and saw all the shiny new bits had arrived :-)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/vw_golf_nutter/cars/20150312_134212_zpswidstioq.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/vw_golf_nutter/media/cars/20150312_134212_zpswidstioq.jpg.html)

I got the front bumper off which was a massive pain in the bum, I then took the front skirt off which at some point in time has been cable tied on!! The front wings have been replaced at some point as they are solid and black underneath, I had fun cutting the arches off anyway.
I then had to change the steering wheel because the little one was stupidly hard to turn without any power steering!

Damn right you shouldn't scrap it! Once its restored with original badges and other bits, plus upgrade where appropriate it'll be a head turner. I'd be searching for better wheels as those don't do the car justice. Good luck with it mate.

Wow that's some serious rusting going on! I'd probably run screaming if I saw that - good job taking it on!
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 15 March 2015, 22:49
It was too late to run screaming I had already bought it unseen  !!
Thanks though people, just need our positive vibes to plough on and she will be back on the road this Summer for sure.
Im not a massive fan of BBS wheels, even though the car technically should have BBS on it, can anyone suggest some wheels to look out for that wont break the bank? (anymore than the welding will that is!)
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: Waspy on 15 March 2015, 23:05
I always think you can't go wrong with RAs, although a lot will say they are overdone (not sure how a stock wheel can be "overdone") mine were £180 in good nick IIRC. The car had Borbet A on when I bought it which looks quite good, but they were rubbing as too wide/wrong offset for my drop.
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: lewis1641 on 18 March 2015, 11:54
wow, its amazing what bodykits can hide.

i would agree that ra's would work well on that, especially with the bbs kit,b ut if you dont like em then you don't like em.

what about something like a mim

So were having a bit of a bad day... the car is progressing well but that is only because of the pure skill of the guy welding the car for me...
i went to see it today and if im honest people were right in saying it should of been scrapped. It has been bodged all over. the back corner of the car was just cardboard, silicone and filler!!
Its nearly all welded now, just tidying and the back panel to do but its cost twice what we thought so there is now no money in the budget for painting it
i cant get anyone to help out on that part, either people are saying no as it has a kit and they say its too much work or they are saying £2k which to me is ridiculous.
Will soon be coming home to the garage where she will have to sit for a while

the terrible state of the bodges!

What about hiring an air compressor and giving the painting a go yourself? Besides, get a decent layer or two down to protect that new metal, then wrap it? Good, cheap alternative till funds are better...

so after my massive dissapointment yesterday i have had a fab offer from a friend... he is going to paint my car end of may! yaaaaaaaay!
he said he doesnt have a booth but sprays his own cars in his workshop and ive seen his cars so i know he can paint. he said max of £1k. so chuffed! the project continues!
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: borax on 27 March 2015, 15:17
what i would do (and feel free to say where i can stick my advice ) is if it is going to sit in a garage until the end of May is strip it down as much as you can. Take the lights, grills, any trim, glass off and out. Strip the doors down (time consuming but easy-ish) wings off. Its all pretty straight forward stuff just really time consuming so if your doing it, it will be free. If the car is stripped down then the guy painting it is going to be able to do a better job. If it isa till and the welders it might be worth taking off the front wings to see if there is any rot in the top corners, and in the corners of the windscreen.

Depending on the size of your garage you good always try and take the old paint off too, you'd get a better finish if the car is back to bare metal (give it a coat of etch primer if you do leave it bare metal).

That's my bit. GOOD LUCK with it though, you certainly bitten off a lot, i think after all this effort you will want to hang on to it for a long time
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: Seanl on 27 March 2015, 16:46
Agreed.  Theres nothing worse than mask lines and overspray where things like trim have been left in place.  I'd recommend removing the glass as well.  Think its only the windscreen which is bonded in so shouldn't be too difficult to remove the rest of the glass yourself, and it'll make a huge difference to the finish.
Great work getting it back from the brink so far, its great when people make the effort to restore rather than brake for parts.

I also agree, if you're going to this much trouble to save it, do it fully. It'll be worth it.
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 27 March 2015, 21:06
it would be a good idea to try and do as much as poss but i need to drive it an hour and a half to my friend to spray it so wont be able to take glass out and wings off etc... i can obv strip out the inside as much as poss though.
The windscreen has been out today and the corners were a bit crusty so being checked for rot and seems all good.
The front wings are new so no rust on them.
Battery tray is now done and the back panel is also done :-)
The car just needs putting back together, undersealed and covered in red oxide then she is coming home

I hired a trailer and got a friend to tow it with his hilux. Trailer was only £35 to rent for the day and I chucked my friend a tenner each way.  Admittedly it was only 20 mins drive but maybe an option, especially if it'll save you that much from him painting it!?

this guy seems to be getting on very quick with this resto? I hope he is cutting out the rot properly and cleaning back the metal before he is welding in the new stuff. believe me there is a big difference between an mot patch up and a repair you want to last for 10-20years.
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 31 March 2015, 08:34
of course he is lol he i have been up there every other day pretty much to see the car and take pics, he has had it now for a month so i wouldnt say thats quick.
he cut away all the rust and i have pics to show so that will be going in my folder for the insurance vaulation :-D there is not a spot of rust left on this car he has gone all over it.
The car doesnt have an MOT, it is going from the bodyshop off the the MOT station where they are doing top mounts, a full service, water pump & belt, brake hoses and then MOT it. It will then come home and wait for the time it can go to be painted. I need to be able to drive it there because we dont have a trailer or 4x4 or anything and dont know anyone with one, I got a quote for a transporter but it was over £150 and not paying that. In that time I will have to repair the bodykit as it has a few chucks missing out of it and has been repaired quite badly in the past.

Picking the car up tomorrow :-)
Been to pay and check her out... there is not 1 patch of rust on her, so pleased. She is all booked in for the full service, cambelt kit, suspension and brake hoses to be done 15th April then will be MOT'd same day...

Tomorrow is MOT day! Ive sorted the few little bulbs n odds and sods, hopefully it wont fail due to the seats not adjusting back and forward? But think everything will be sorted once they have changed the top mounts and fingers crossed she comes home with an MOT for the first time in 6 yrs!

How come you haven't replaced the offside front wing?
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!

what do you mean? Theres nothing wrong with the wings at the front. They are black on the arches as they were new a few years back and the car was painted with the bodykit on

So today the car went in for some work and for an MOT...
Unfortunately it didnt go to plan
The belts have been done, water pump and top mounts, also an oil change and filter... the car is sounding a lot healthier.
Unfortunately it wont pass the MOT just yet, there are a couple of bits that have been missed with the welding that need sorting... there is a hole in the rear something or other.. forgot the name... frame or something lol... there is also a patch by the rear brake compensator?
So it has to go back to the bodyshop friday for more welding. It also needs front shocks.
The MOT garage asked if it had been sat in a puddle for a long time! They said the car is orange underneath and all the parts under there are rotten on the inside... he wondered whether it had been accident damaged or something ie- driven into a pond!  :undecided:

So anyway, nothing i can do but plough on....

That sounds bad.

Edit: Is that a hole in the rear beam?! That is a pretty chunky bit of metal to have rotted through

yeah thats it the rear beam! yep that i indeed a hole! i have no idea how that could of gone...

It wasn't wasted, not yet anyway. The only way it was wasted is if you scrap it now. Keep ploughing on (If finances really do allow), don't look back, the end result will be well worth it.

rear beams are readily available, bang a replacement one in and jobs a good un. i doubt its been sat in a lake, it would stink.

looking from a more positive perspective, a professional who's job it is is to make sure your car is up to mot standard can only find a few things wrong with it.

chin up, and crack on!
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: borax on 16 April 2015, 12:06
Chin up, you are def. doing an heroic save with this one, but a lot of the big money stuff has been done i.e the welding.

New shocks are cheap, and easy to do yourself. Looks like you need a new rear beam, if you can do this yourself it will be cheap to do, can be an a88rse of a job though.

I would have a look underneath the car where the welding has been done 'cos in one of the pictures it looks like one of the new welds has not been painted/protected, you want to get to that soon otherwise you will be going around in circles.

Someone previously mentioned a hole in a wing. Your front drivers side wing has had a big hole drilled in it (induction kit?), not standard, but you might like it.

Post by: Waspy on 16 April 2015, 12:15
And remember, dubbers love dubs. There are often people willing to lend a hand (like replacing the rear beam) if they are close by with a bit of free time. Just ask, squeaky wheel gets the oil and all that.

thanks everyone for the positive messages :-)

she is back at the bodyshop today.. the guy is going over the bits he missed when he undersealed it. He is also going to put kurust on the chassis legs and then underseal again there. We are going to weld the rear beam for now, not ideal but it gets it MOT-able anyway, can always get on to getting a new rear beam during the summer.

Suspension wise I am on the lookout for a 40mm kit, going to try and do it myself one weekend, i may regret that though!

Got some issues with the fuel pump at the moment, might have to post up in the technical help section about that.

Lots of issues but im going to just try and chill, i was trying to get it done for this summer for the shows but looks like im just going to have to do it slowly and a bit at a time when i have the time/money now

that one on e-bay is a bit of a shed, its been on before and not sold. I wonder if the Haynes manual is included in the sale?.

Slowly, slowy with your project. Get your hands dirty on it, the more jobs you do the less daunting future problems (and there will always be some) will be. Its a lot cheaper doing them yourself.

Saying that, i dont have a garage and some jobs i cant do. I'm not that gifted at mechanical stuff, but the internet and haynes manual are your friends!

I eyed up that mk2 on eBay as I'm thinking of shifting my mk4 ASAP and doing a mk2 1.8T 20V project, but it looks a little too far gone for my liking. The only other red 3-door big bumper I've seen is a £2500 example!

well thats the thing. I mean 16v's do come up but a lot of them are quite high prices so even if i take this slowly and literally do everything on it, clutch, gearbox, suspension, paint, wheels...
at least it will be worth it in the end as its a sought after model

So the other bits are welded now, ive also taken off the rear wiper, stickered it up and took the side trim off to treat some rust bubbles. The wiper stalks are now painted black again and almost finished the front skirt.
Bought some BBS wheels today, some smoked rear lights and also a standard gti grille with a black badge.
The cars back in the garage tomorrow as it has a coolant leak :-( its leaking out the thermostat housing from when the water pump was changed. Its also not idling properly so going to try and change the inlet manifold gaskets and clean out the throttle body but havnt had the motivation to start that yet.

Every sticker is an additional 2bhp, we all know that! Personally, those letters from "Golf GTI" on the back of your car need to be replaced with the original mk2 items:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Golf-MK2-Genuine-VW-GOLF-GTI-Rear-Trunk-Boot-Badge-Emblem-Nos-/300992818995?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Model%3AGolf|Plat_Gen%3AMK+II&hash=item461491ef33

Just think if you've gone to all that trouble for the body work, don't miss the little details. I like the rear smoked lights you're running, work well with the colour of your mk2. Considered swapping the engine for a mk3 GTI one instead, get a bit more economy, performance and reliability?

Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 06 May 2015, 10:34
thanks for the badge links, would def rather have original.
i think the mk2 is a better looking engine and would prefer to keep it standard, its had a top end rebuild when it had the high lift cam so it should be good for a while yet but if i ever need to change it i will bare that in mind

Top Mounts were done last time it tried for MOT, so about 2 weeks ago so they are good.
Its a 40mm GMax Kit but is a few months old. made a real difference though, handled really well on the way home :-)
Onwards to the MOT after I get back from my Holiday next week!

Beauty with plate holders is you can keep a set of UK legal ones in the boot under the carpet, if you get pulled just pretend you've been to a meet and "forgot" to swap the plates back, then just do it there and then so the 5-0 are happy. Job done!

that's what ive done lol

so ive been doing a bit more today..

took door cards off and saw fresh unpainted metal  so I sprayed that to within an inch of its life with hammerite!

also been trying to get to the bottom of the starting problem. when its started and you drive about in it its fine but when its left for 4hrs+ it doesn't wana start. battery is good, alternator is good, it seems im losing 5v when its turning to the starter motor, 14v when car off and 9v at starter when cranking... not sure if that's right. perhaps its not turning fast enough to start the car?
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: th3_f15t on 06 June 2015, 08:59
Try the old trick of depressing the clutch when starting, as this takes load off the starter motor. If it then starts OK, probably safe to say the starter motor is giving up the ghost.

Alternatively, I know mk2's can suffer from fuelling issues when warm, my old 8v GTI certainly did. I know it's unlikely in this situation but worth mentioning I suppose.

OK thanks will go out and try starting with my foot on the clutch. it prob wont work though as its been left for 3 days so its prob a no hoper! bloody car just likes to bask out in the sun, she doesn't want to work for a living!

the car didn't start with foot on the clutch :-(
she didn't even start on a jump earlier... I give up!
I drove it about today and it really smells of petrol...

on another note I had the tailgate welded up where it had gone under the number plate lights

Booked tickets for GTI international today, our first show together!! Its 4hours away for us so im slightly scared we wont make it but am going to give it a try.
So today I made an effort and got a few bits done..

Put some sound proofing in the rear

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/vw_golf_nutter/cars/10492528_10153108178373411_4799270592892130175_n_zpso1ivanwr.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/vw_golf_nutter/media/cars/10492528_10153108178373411_4799270592892130175_n_zpso1ivanwr.jpg.html)

Then I painted the letters on the manifold

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/vw_golf_nutter/cars/11401030_10153108180813411_1827649473875057408_n_zpsyntkhpun.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/vw_golf_nutter/media/cars/11401030_10153108180813411_1827649473875057408_n_zpsyntkhpun.jpg.html)

Also replaced the passenger side gutter seal and rust treated

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/vw_golf_nutter/cars/11407073_10153108773538411_6931232135072919252_n_zpsxgn5kiex.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/vw_golf_nutter/media/cars/11407073_10153108773538411_6931232135072919252_n_zpsxgn5kiex.jpg.html)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/vw_golf_nutter/cars/11412252_10153108773978411_2605966719386831072_n_zpsoqi8nbbf.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/vw_golf_nutter/media/cars/11412252_10153108773978411_2605966719386831072_n_zpsoqi8nbbf.jpg.html)

And on went my plate and fixed the boot trim on properly

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/vw_golf_nutter/cars/11013259_10153108774343411_6688284135132658280_n_zpsmf6mrptk.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/vw_golf_nutter/media/cars/11013259_10153108774343411_6688284135132658280_n_zpsmf6mrptk.jpg.html)

And best thing about today was... the car started without having to jump start it for the first time LOL

My car has been in at a Garage for the last 5 days... they are checking out why it doesn't like to start when cold.
So far between myself and the garage we have done the following...
Tested Battery, tested fine but have replaced for a new one anyway
Tested Alternator and was 14amps so was fine
Test starter Motor, was reading 9amps when cranking so we replaced that for a new one
Put in an addition earth from battery, didn't make a difference
Used jump cables from battery to starter to check cabling and made no difference
Cold start 5th injector is working
Fuel pumps both replaced
Car has been fully serviced including belts
Idle valve replaced

After all this the car is now starting under its own steam however not straight away so still has an issue somewhere

Next the garage are checking cambelt tension and timing and doing the rocker cover gasket I have asked them to do
I have bought a 2nd hand 16v ECU and if it is no better soon I will get the loom and ECU replaced!

Drama!

Thanks!

So Luckily I got my mk2 back today as I wrote off the mk3 gti I had as a daily yesterday  thank god the mk2 put a smile back on my face

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/vw_golf_nutter/cars/10177991_10153135715343411_3257320489878012762_n_zpsuzuyt7r8.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/vw_golf_nutter/media/cars/10177991_10153135715343411_3257320489878012762_n_zpsuzuyt7r8.jpg.html)

So the mk2 has just had..
new battery
new starter
idle control valve
cambelt tightened
timing done
mixtures done

and now she is running sooooo much better, this car is a dream to drive now, so pleased!
still not 100% with the starting but for now im happy.

Love to see it's coming back to the right way of life. Out of interest, does it have cold start or hot starting issues?

thanks! she has cold start issues, but the cold start injector is working fine.
she is starting on the 2nd turn of the key now which to me is amazing, she went to her first meet last night and who should we see there... another red bbs mk2!! crazy!

I wonder if it's worth replacing the fuel filter (if you've not done so already) and possibly a shot of injector cleaner through the system as well, just to try and eliminate any fuelling issues to start with.

Also, do you start it with the clutch depressed, as this takes load of the starter motor (it doesn't have to rotate parts in the gearbox) and this also may help it start. If this does improve starting, chances are either the starter motor is failing or your battery isn't producing as much charge as it should and may need replacing.

Only other thing I'd suggest is take it for a nice long road trip and do a stead speed for an hour or two, give the engine a chance to really come up to temperature and pressure which will help it clean itself out.

Just read this through from start to finish (I am currently considering purchasing a MK2 Golf!) and it is a thoroughly enjoyable read.  Major props on the work you have put into this - have you been keeping a running cost of your total costs?!

I was torn as to whether I should buy one of the more expensive MK2's which have already been done or do something like you are doing....

Do you want something you can jump in and enjoy everyday, or something which will be off the road 50% of the time, but ultimately you will be able to call your own?

Taking on a challenge like this will often become more expensive than just buying a really nice clean example. So then the only real factor becomes if you want to put your stamp on the car.

I think im up to about £2800 at the moment including buying it.... oops...
but to be honest there are a lot of cars that look solid and are on the road but once you start taking trim off and lifting carpet they are not as solid as they seemed... I mean look at mine, it looked perfectly ok but underneath the arches it was rotten as hell...
I would rather pay a cheaper price and make the car what I want than buy one already done which may have underlying issues, remember they are now 23-31yrs old so unless you are spending £3k+ you are going to need to spend some money.
Another good thing is ive got to know the car and I get lots of praise for rescuing it, theres no glory in buying one already done!

Honestly I don't know if I would have the contacts, know-how and patience to buy one needing some work and do it myself after reading through this thread!

I am in no rush so I will just keep my eye out and see what comes up...being from NI as well means I am more limited unless I want to buy from England and bring it across - i.e. there is one for sale ATM for £8K   1989 GTI 8v...!!!!  Crazy money even for the low miles.

Duckbill splitter is definitely a cool addition

Fair play to you. I agree, its a much bigger sense of achievement from building and fixing the car up to the eventual finished article.  Although it's extremely stressful at times when things go wrong or you notice rust it will make up for it in the end. Plus by doing this you will know the car inside out.
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 17 July 2015, 09:59
yeah exactly, its nice to learn more about the car as I go, ive done things to this car I didn't know I could do but ive got my tools out and given it a go, its been fun, and yes a little stressful!

Starfox- Wow I wouldn't spend £8k on one! Definitely come over and take one back on the ferry! much better idea and far more choice!

I think im quite lucky as I do have a lot of VW contacts, ive been into VWs ever since I could drive, or just before actually.... being a women helps too

Im going to keep it original colour, I want it to look how it looked when it was delivered to the customer when it was new... until that point though im just collecting parts, stashing them away and playing around with the car and different looks. Don't think ive done too badly with it really considering it went through a very ugly stage where I thought I might have to scrap it!

Today my gear linkage ball thing that had disintegrated was replaced and I now have reverse again yay! The car actually feels so much better and the gears are where they are supposed to be again.

Unfortunately we have sprung a new oil leak, this time its out of the distributor :-(
Don't really know how im going to fix this one, the garage suggested getting an ABF botton end and refurbing the top end but obviously that's going to be loads of money so god knows what I will do. In the mean time got to keep topping up :-(

Sourcing an ABF engine complete isn't as expensive as you think, and possibly a better option than using your current top end. Find a written off (rear end damaged) mk3 16v and get all the running gear for just a few hundred quid. Much smoother engine, better economy and easier to tune (you can remap the ECU for even smoother power and more efficiency).

Or even a mk4 1.8T engine (150bhp version), more power but again, smoother and more efficient. The 1.8T engines are a very common swap so loads of advice and help out there and it's probably the most cost effective engine swap currently out there for mk2/3 Golfs.

its not really the cost of the engine its that I cant do it myself so the garage will have to do it and the more work the more it will cost... plus I need my car as a daily so if its a big job the car has to be off road to do it...
my finding another bottom end ABF or 9A, I already have a spare KR head so the KR head and bottom end can be rebuilt and ready to drop in so my cars off road for minimal time :-)
happy days.
Just gotta find one close to me, they all seem miles away

Oil leaks story of my life luckily was only a seal so that's sorted now. I'm taking my golf for it's 1st long journey Friday well about 70 mile there and 70 back. Anyone know what you can average on fuel for the 16v? I love driving it so I'm really looking forward to this drive 😊

Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 23 July 2015, 08:53
good luck!
our first run was 410 miles round lol but she made it! we got about 75 miles to £10 on the motorway. think I worked out once it averages about 25mpg so that's good

Wow, the 16v is thirsty. My 8v does 35mpg all day, with a very heavy right foot...

Don't seem to bad at all does it. Going to give her a clean another coat of wax. Luckily it's pretty much motorway so should get decent miles to the gallon :)

I bet you could do it yourself, I didn't think I could..but I've just done a full 8v auto to 16 manual conversion, it wasn't easy but it's doable, I did it on my driveway

my mechanic things its coming to the end of its life, he said the cam chain is very noisy and it is leaking oil through the middle of the dizzy but that's not the only leak... he said he really thinks its rebuild time

Spent most of friday trying to smooth the rear arches, the welding left them a bit uneven with obvious lines where the new arches are welded on so I started with the filler and sanding but havnt finished yet.

Also fitted some Iron cross smoked headlamps.

Then popped out to pick up my daughter hoping to continue the sanding and my fuel pump under the car decided to die leaving me stranded! Fun times.

got one of the arches smoothed with some paint on. was harder that it looked actually trying to cover the welding seams. its not perfect but its going to be under the kit anyway so it will do for now

The fuel pump is on its way so hopefully wont be long until the cars back on the road. Still on the look out for a new engine...

Almost speechless!

I know from experience that a BBS kit fits in a way that covers a lot, but not enough to not be able to feel for rot that bad.  Did you check the car over before buying?

Despite what may seem like a belated negative comment, I have to say it's so good to see you gave it what it deserved because clearly somebody didn't love it to let it get like that.  must have been parked in poor conditions for years, grass??

Keep on it, it will reward you for saving it's life.

What was your fuel pump problem? I had the same. The housing was leaking so I found a used 1 fitted it and that 1 leaking. Ebayer a total tool wouldn't refund it. Anyway I had fitted a direct fuel pump now and it's good as gold. Cost me £300 but worth. I've also decided to keep my golf I can't part with it. So having 3 cars and no point in having 3 my van had to go. The golf now stored in my new unit. She's undergone a wet sand and she shines like a show car 😊

it was off road for 6 years and I think it must of been on grass seen as the underneath was orange!

I bought it blind on ebay as the guy selling said it had been for a pre MOT and only need a few little bits, 'a patch on the passenger side sill' LOOOOOOOL

anyway shes a labour of love so i dont mind

the fuel pump has gone underneath... the housing is all split and broken too and wont go back on now.. got to try and find another fuel pump/housing/accumilator complete but its proving very difficult... shes still off road

Post by: Dean0991 on 21 August 2015, 20:31
I had the same trouble brought a 2nd hand 1 any that was knackered.
I've had a direct fuel pump fitted so need for a housing anymore. Cost me £300 but worth the money in the long run

Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 24 August 2015, 10:31
im looking in to this now, could you give me an idea of what pump you have used and how its set up without all the housing.. do you need the filter/accumilator? thanks
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: gazareth on 05 September 2015, 17:44
yes ideally you want an accumulator/reservoir with the main pump. if it wasn't needed vw would not have fitted it. you should look in to getting 1 custom made as oe ones seem to be extinct.
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 07 September 2015, 18:30
So i found a 2nd hand genuine pump and housing, all fitted, car wouldnt start..
after A LOT of investigation we came to the conclusion compression has gone and probably the head gasket and piston rings so out came the engine never to start again

Its now sat in the garage without an engine waiting to go in to the mechanics to have a 9A fitted!

Sterling effort. Why the older 9a over ABF or 1.8T though? I thought my rust was bad, yours was disastrous. Well done for resurrecting it. I prefer the BBS Alloys though I must say. Where did you get that splitter?.
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 10 September 2015, 15:21
which splitter? the duck bill one? ebay for that one.

luck, NO, none of that lol but then its not about luck, its about not being a dumb arse and checking over a 26yr old car before you buy it, but i clearly didnt do that!

I decided on the 9A because it looks the same as the KR that came out of it and the ABF is a taller block so I wouldnt of been able to use my 4in1 manifold and polished inlet i dont believe.
Even though its not original I didnt want it to be blaitantly obvious when you open the bonnet.
Plus this one just happened to come up for a good price and only 67000 miles on it.
It is still a little later than the original engine so I think there may be some plugs to change but im hoping its fairly straight forward for the garage.

Cant believe the amount of money ive sunk into this so far, Im at about £3000 and the car looks like this...

little update... shes still not starting, the 9A also has poor compression (100, 45, 75, 100) and the flap in the metering head isnt opening... dont really understand whats up with it.
The head is currently being rebuilt, re-seating the valves and stuff as they did a leak test and there was smoke coming out number 2. Just leaving it in the garages capable hands at the mo
Title: Re: Seriously rotten mk2 gti!!
Post by: gazareth on 20 October 2015, 20:06
yeah that compression is way low. maybe the piston rings are gummed up. the flap wont open unless there is good vacuum from the engine so if there is no compression there will be no vacuum.

Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 14 January 2016, 21:11
Ok so I got the car back from the garage in November... once the engine had been rebuilt there were a few little tweaks and the car would fire up but not run, then we noticed the fuel pump was leaking... again! So the new one i sourced was no good and i had to salvage the old one from the garden and my garage made 1 good one out of the 2 broken ones!
Once this pressure issue was sorted the car started and ran... I had quite a few tears and was allowed to take the car home

It went back twice since then, the cambelt was catching on the cover and then the temperature gauge was messing about but both now sorted or solved

Oh nearly forgot, one frosty December night, it was a friday night as it always is when my car breaks my ignition switch decided to melt... yes melt... there really is nothing that hasnt been replaced on this car now LOL
so i had a nice visit from the RAC and the car was hotwired so i can get it home!
I then sourced a new ignition switch, and had to get all new locks and a genuine key, the lock in the ignition was damaged and i didnt want 3 keys for all the locks. The genuine lock set and key cost me £240 in total but worth it, wouldnt put any nasty aftermarket locks on my car!
So i had to do without the car for like a week and couldnt lock the doors so was constantly curtain twitching making sure it wasnt stolen!

Anyway so heres some pics...

The engine apart smoke testing and sorting the compression issues

Our maiden voyage after the rebuild... a 120mile round journey and it put a big smile on my face

The cars christmas present, the heckblende and lower spec standard lights put on to match, love it

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/vw_golf_nutter/cars/10338738_10153503831233411_2598193140717068505_n_zps1kxrw5rg.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/vw_golf_nutter/media/cars/10338738_10153503831233411_2598193140717068505_n_zps1kxrw5rg.jpg.html)

So thats pretty much it, ive been using her daily and shes also had another new starter motor, alternator and all battery cable wiring new because over Christmas it didnt want to start and battery was dead...
Voltage drain test was done and only 0.1 of an amp drain which is probably the LCD clock display so the answer was obviously the alternator and cables which have been changed.

The only niggle left is the temp gauge sometimes has a life of its own, it reads fine all the time your driving then if you sit in traffic it has a spaz attack and goes all the way over as if your over heating... we have tested the pipes and radiator though and they are not that hot and fan not even kicked in yet... its just a faulty gauge, im guessing its an earth issue where the earths got swapped over to the new engine as it used to be ok. Im just watching the oil temp on the MFA as a guide and the car is running and driving lovely, i cant even explain how well this car drives, its as if im back in 1989 driving a brand new 16v mk2, BIG SMILES

'Devil Car' as she has been renamed will be changing hands in the next week or so, really gutted not to finish her but I just dont have the money for the respray and now we have another sprog on the way there wont be the time or money to do it, im going to be taking on our T4 as my daily and am pleased ive found a great home for this car.
I look forward to some more updates Mike and i hope you get as much pleasure out of this car as I have, couldnt be more chuffed that she was saved

Nope, I'm an Essex boy. I found out today that the unit next door to my workshop has just been rented out to someone who's setting up a paint and restoration business. We have an example of this guys work already in the form of a 20 year old RS Escort that still looks perfect despite spending the past few years sat in a field. We had it up on the ramp today and there's only 2 small areas where the paint is starting to fail... Considering this is a Ford and we can't find anywhere with rust other than a few small, easily fixed places it speaks volumes about this guys work. And that was 20 years ago...

I hope that I can take this car to where is deserves to be, planning a full shell strip down and restoration now along with some OEM+ touches... Stay tuned!

In addition to a full restoration of the shell, I'm looking at getting the 16V engine built and tuned while it's out the car, contacted TSR Performance to see what I need to budget for it. Also looking at suspension and chassis upgrades to go on when it gets put back together as well. Hoping to sell off the R32 to fund this as I would quite like to have it up and running before the end of the show season so I can go out and tour around in it.
