Title: Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

I think it’s about time we have some easily available info for new/old users about the basics of modifying and common issues. Please remember these are based for us less talented mechanical monkeys

Mods please don’t move this to the Info and maintenance section as not many people look in there! Can it be stickyed in here?

Before posting a new topic, try a search. Or at least have a look in this section as there is A LOT of info in there.

Suspension

1st question people always ask are: “Are these any good” (With a link to Ebay referring to either Hottuning/JOM/Jamex Coilovers. These are budget coilovers, as stated in the ad. Some people haven’t had issues where as the majority do (Squeaking and seizing) still value for money. For a proper decent setup your looking at £600+ although SPAX are very good value for money too. REMEMBER YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

Induction Kit/Drilled Airbox

For any real gains in this department you NEED to have cold air going in to the engine. There is no point of bolting on an induction kit as this will do nothing but suck in hot air. People have found the cheapest and easiest thing is to drill your current airbox with a performance filter (K&N and Pipercross seem to be favourites).

Here is a link:

Gains: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=129025.0

You can still run an induction kit, but make sure it it’s protected from the heat and your running a cold air feed. For the VR6 the most popular kit is the BMC CDA kit.

Exhaust systems

A lot of people run cat back systems. Jetex, Magnex, Scorpion and Milltek all have good reputations.

If I remember correctly, all the 8v/16v/VR6 systems fit but the 8v uses a short reducer on the cat back.

De-arching/re-arching, Bumpers, Lights and Interior

GTI/VR6 arches can be removed by drilling out the rivets under the wing. You will then need to replace the side trim with CL/GL side trim.

Later VR6 models came smoothed.

Textured bumpers and smooth bumpers are interchangeable between all models.

Anyone who doesn’t own a GTI/VR6 that want to upgrade their interior. This is the easiest way to improve it. Simply just replace the seats and door cards with the GTI ones, VR6 leather will also fit. Will make a big improvement for little cost 5 door and 3 door seats will all fit with out a problem, however door cards won't. :afro:

Paint Code

Paint codes can be found on the sticker in the boot, or on the service book.

Vento Front

To acheive the Vento look all you need is the bonnet, lights and grill. NOT the slam panel!

How about something about the recent daily asked question of engine conversions? Though not sure what to link to as the forums engine conversion faq is very outdated and pretty much useless once you get past the basic information

Ye the engine conversion section needs a serious overhaul me thinks. Theres enough of us that have done various engine conversions/modifications to make it quite comprehensive. Could start with Brads/Dans 1.8T list, then......
How to charge/turbo a VR
How to charge/turbo an ABF
How to charge/turbo an 8v?!?!? (yes we all know this costs lots an lots for little gain but some info on it may be helpful)
Lets get on it peeps, I think we are all getting a littl bored of the same questions been asked

I've added the thread that Brad has wrote with the basic information on which you will need. I'll wait for you to do your turbo build then we can add that one too!

hey guys, ive just bought a 1997 mk3 golf 8v gti, ive been looking all over the forum for ideal coolant to use for my car, ive also tried looking elsewhere but everyone seems to be giving contradicting info.....

just need to know what coolant is the best to use, like i said ive been told to pick up a g48 from halfords, but the colour is blue/green, and when i checked what was already in my car under the bonnet, its a got the red/pink coolant already in there, ive also read that we should not mix the two or it will go all gunky like in the engine which isnt good obviously

someone tell me what to do or use!!!!

im gonna flush the system anyway, but what is the best coolant to use???

any help is appreciated

cheers
