HELP! Knock sensor, crank sensor or coilpack?
« on: 27 March 2018, 15:06 »
Hi Guys and Gals,

So last Saturday I was driving my MK3 GTI 8V 1992 and I got about 9 miles when my accellerator just died and about 5 seconds later my engine cut out. I tried to restart the car and wouldn't turn over. Eventually I had to call the AA out and he pointed to the knock sensor and showed me that it had basically shorted or something, the casing had exploded away from it and he said something about the earth wire coming loose. Im sure he mentioned something about the crank sensor too?
Anyway today I changed the knock sensor and the car starts and runs but cuts out after 30 seconds. A nice chap on facebook has advised me I could need to change the coilpack and crank sensor too. How would I go about testing these before I bought new ones. Thank you for any help, Much appreciated.

It only has a hall sender, which if it runs at all won't be the cause.

Did you tighten the knock sensor with a torque wrench?
