Title: HELP..1999 mk4 Golf1.8 GTI 125BHP
Post by: mrshaneyp on 24 March 2011, 00:16
I've recently sold my mk3 1.4 and picked a black mk4 gti 1.8 (not turbo) with the heated leather seats, and lowered sports suspension and no current engine mods, i have a few problems with it and would like to have some opinions please :)
they are;
1. A banging on the left side when i go over pot holes on the left, no banging over speed bumps only bumps or pot holes on left.
2. A knocking when i turn full lock to the right from the left side.
3. Engine sometimes fails to maintain revs when in neutral at lights and can stall?.
??
The Rest im doing over the weekend :) but those three things are bugging me... help please :)

No 1: could be a top mount worn
No 2: Might be a cv joint
No 3: not sure  :undecided:

I'd go for:

1. Ball joint or ARB drop link.
2. CV joint or drive shaft scraping on the ARB drop link
3. Air leak, Idle Control valve or any from the previous posts

hmm, for 3. when cold normally.

but today im replacing the front left ball joint as the "boys" down wilco told me its cracked :S? so im replacing that, rear bushes have been ordered and will be fitted tomorow to try solve the banging.. also giving it a full service with new oil oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, and the rest... will update after the works are complete :)

thankyou people :D

If it's mainly when cold I'd point my finger at a lazy idle control valve.

The service may help with the poor idle, clogged filter and sooty plugs won't help matters.
