Power Steering Pump on it's way out?

How common on a VR is it for the PS Pump to fail?
Mine has suddenly started making a horrible whining noise when turning the wheel and the steering almost feels lumpy at slower speeds..

give the belt a try first as mine was giving similar noise/feeling until I renewed it

Try tensioning it first (the belt) if that cures it then definitely get a new belt! They dont last long after you tighten them!

Hmm... checked it in daylight this morning and the fluid is very low....yet i only topped it up 2 weeks ago.... there's also some oil on the drive under the car around about the reservoir area..

The steering rack has a hydraulic ram. Dont know a bout a seal kit if there is one.

Problem solved..

The pipe that carries the PS Fluid from the reservoir to the pump was rusted through....
Unfortunately its a VW only jobby... ie not cheap  :cry:
