Before removing the airbag, you have to disconnect the battery, and after fitting the airbag, you have to put the key into ignition, turn it to "ON", and then reconnect the battery.Doing it this way will prevent the airbag light from coming on.

By the way, always disconnect battery, you were lucky because airbags often go off when disconnected and connected when the battery is on!
